Google Translate Challenges Duolingo: Is the Green Owl in Trouble?

Google Traduction concurrence Duolingo

After incorporating Gemini into its translation app, Google is poised to challenge the foreign language learning giant, Duolingo, with the introduction of new AI features and an engaging practice mode.

In terms of artificial intelligence, Google Translate has not been neglected by the Mountain View company. This year, the app has seen enhancements such as real-time translation improvements and a new, highly useful button. Most notably, Gemini has made its debut, bringing with it a slew of groundbreaking features.

This time around, Google Translate is taking on (again) Duolingo, a cornerstone in the realm of foreign language learning – which itself added a new “language” to its platform this year. Indeed, Google Translate will soon incorporate game-like elements similar to those used by the iconic green owl.

Google Translate Directly Competes with Duolingo in Latest Update

The rivalry between Google and Duolingo is a long-standing one. Back in 2021, during its I/O conference, Google introduced an AI, LaMDA, designed for conversation. Its purpose was to integrate it into a foreign language learning tool with interactive quizzes. This project, which seemed to have stalled, might be revived in a new form. According to reports from CNET and a recent publication by Android Police, Google Translate may soon introduce unique AI functionalities and a playful training mode – akin to Duolingo’s approach.

Indeed, AssembleDebug noticed in the latest app version (9.15.114) potential changes to the user interface: the introduction of AI model selectors, Fast and Advanced. The Fast mode could be used for simple, instantaneous translations, such as translating a menu. The Advanced mode might involve Gemini to deeply analyze the context of a conversation. According to this report, a practice mode might be introduced with this update to make learning foreign languages more fun.

These features would fit into a broader context of developing language interpretation at Google, such as the interpreter mode introduced with the launch of the Pixel Fold in 2023, auto-dubbing technology on YouTube, or the demonstration at this year’s Google I/O conference of instant translation using Android XR glasses.
