Formation of a New Venture
Two years ago, Ive and his team approached OpenAI and began collaborating on initial projects under tight secrecy. “It became clear that our ambitions to develop, design, and produce a new line of products necessitated the creation of an entirely new company.” Consequently, last year, he co-founded the startup io with Scott Cannon, Evans Hankey, and Tang Tan, all former Apple colleagues. OpenAI, the creator of ChatGPT, has announced its acquisition of io for $6.5 billion, a deal expected to finalize this summer pending regulatory approval.
Anticipation of Groundbreaking Technology
Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, has already experienced a prototype of the first device developed in collaboration with Jony Ive. “I have had the chance to live with it, and I believe it’s the coolest technology the world has ever seen,” expressed an enthusiastic Altman. “I think we have the opportunity here to completely reimagine what it means to use a computer.” There have been rumors about a type of smartphone without a screen, though details remain vague.
“The products we use to access incredible technologies are decades old. It makes sense to think that there truly is an alternative to these outdated products,” stated Jony Ive. The first OpenAI products created by io are set to be unveiled in 2026 and might position OpenAI as a direct competitor to Apple.
