The new update brings new camera tools to Vine that includes, grid, focus and ghost tools to make shooting easier. The biggest change is the introduction of channels that features users’ vine updates by pre-defined category. There are 15 channels to choose from and is a great step towards allowing users to discover great new content based on the selected channel.
Vine now also features Twitter-like revine feature that allows you to share other people’s post with your followers with just one tap. This feature would allow the credit of the post to go to the original account and thus helping people identify the actual source.
Another noteworthy feature introduced in the update is “protected posts” which as the name suggests allows you to protect your updates and share it only people you approve.
On its blog Vine teases us with more upcoming updates by mentioning, “and we’ve got even more coming soon.” With Instagram video support gaining substantial popularity among users the short video clip app market has just started getting heated up. It will be interesting to see how Instagram and Vine innovate and differentiate their services to not only retain existing users but to also continue to grow its user-base.

]]> https://touchreviews.net/vine-iphone-major-update-camera-tools-channels/feed/ 2According to a report from Bloomberg, popular social networking and microblogging service, Twitter is planning to introduce a standalone music app, being called ‘Twitter Music’. The app will bring streaming music capabilities to iOS users, similar to other services such as Pandora and Spotify.
The report does note, however, that streaming will rely on Berlin, Germany based SoundCloud. SoundCloud allows for artists to upload their music via a web URL, which can then be embedded on blogs and social networking sites such as Facebook and Twitter. Users can then leave comments on the music and interact with one another, which is likely what is attracting Twitter to creating such a service.
News of Twitter’s new venture has been relatively recent, with music labels hearing about it earlier this week and a report from CNet noting that Twitter had acquired music discovery service, We Are Hunted last year. We Are Hunted is a San Francisco based company that allows users to discover music from blogs, social networks, and BitTorrents and organizes them in a tile-based format for easy access.
With the new ‘Twitter Music’ app, Twitter would be competing with other social networks such as Facebook and Instagram which have been making a number of changes to their services. This includes Facebook’s new Graph Search feature and News Feed. Twitter appears to be targeting iOS specifically, having also introduced video sharing app, Vine to the platform.

]]> https://touchreviews.net/twitter-introduce-standalone-twitter-music-app-bringing-music-streaming-ios-users/feed/ 1Early Saturday, NYTimes reported that Apple Inc. (AAPL) was looking to invest “hundreds of millions” in microblogging company, Twitter. The report assumes that either Apple is investing or purcahsing a large stake in the company and that the two companies have been in talks in recent months over such a matter.
Apple has considered an investment in the hundreds of millions of dollars, one that could value Twitter at more than $10 billion, up from an $8.4 billion valuation last year, these people said. They declined to be named because the discussions were private.
There is no guarantee that the two companies, which are not in negotiations at the moment, will come to an agreement. But the earlier talks are a sign that they may form a stronger partnership amid intensifying competition from the likes of Google and Facebook.
However, The Wall Street Journal also came out and negated the claims made in the NYTime report, leading speculators to remain skeptical about such a deal between the two companies. Apple has been dabbling with social media in recent years, pushing for its own Ping network in iTunes, which failed to attract users. Since then, the Cupertino company has heavily incorporated Twitter into both iOS and OS X.
Apple has mixed in Twitter under the share sheets in multiple applications, including Safari on all of its devices and even Notification Center in iOS 6 and OS X Mountain Lion. Although Facebook will also be a part of the operating systems soon, Twitter remains tightly integrated.
It is unclear whether Apple still in talks with Twitter or if the two companies even had contact with each other. However, such a deal involving “hundreds of millions” might not justify the profitability Cupertino based company could possibly extract.

]]> https://touchreviews.net/apple-inc-aapl-reportedly-considered-investing-hundreds-millions-twitter/feed/ 1That’s not to say that Instagram isn’t a great app, it is, but there are better apps out there and Wood Camera for iPhone is certainly one of them, do read on though and I’ll tell you why.
Lenses are one of the main things users of camera apps like to use and Wood Camera has 23 of these, they’re your standard lenses but something that is unique about them is the ability to take pictures with the filter enabled. This can save you a lot of time if you have a lot of pictures that you want to take and add lens effects too.
Applying filters is just one of many adjustments that you can make to your pictures with 17 different textures, 12 frames and my favorite features of the vignettes which enables you to highlight specific areas of the photographs.
All of these features come with the ability to apply how big the effect is via a slider which puts you in control of how your photographs looks. Applying all of these features is easy to do with all the options available along the bottom of the screen.
You can also easily take a quick full screen view of your creation via a switch at the top of the screen and from a technical perspective Wood Camera will import your iPhone 4S pictures at the full 8 mega-pixel resolution to ensure that your pictures can look as best as possible.
Of course it’s no good creating this these pieces of art if you can’t share them with the world and there are no shortage of options there either. All of the major social networks are there from Twitter and Facebook to Flickr and even Instagram as well as to your camera roll or via email.
One final nice option is the ability to have Wood Camera launch to the photo taking screen meaning that it can be a true replacement to the stock camera application.
So if you are one of those people who wasn’t happy when Instagram were brought by Facebook or are just looking for a great camera / picture editing app then Wood Camera for iPhone could be just the app for you and is available for $1.99 from Apple’s App Store.

Wake Smarter puts that fancy bedside alarm clock to shame. It has an amazing variety of choices on how you would like your alarm to behave. There are options for the usual alarm sounds, repeats, snooze-ability, and custom labels. But Wake Smarter goes WAY beyond that.
As an alarm clock it has a daytime display with gorgeous background photos or textures to choose from, and it has a much simpler nighttime display with a black background a red numerals that are easy on the eyes in the dark. The fun begins once you set an alarm. You have the ability to set the alarm to the minute and choose which days of the week it applies to. But then you get to add actions to that alarm. Actions such as having a custom message read to you, or the weather, or the news headlines, or your day’s calendar events, or your Facebook or Twitter news. Even the alarm audio allows you to choose from some unique sounds or a radio station or one of your iTunes playlists. And you can have more that one action on your alarm, so if you can’t choose you can focus on which action you want to have first. You can even control the length of the snooze feature and set it between 1-60 minutes.
There is a sleep timer too that is just as customizable. You can control the length, up to two hours, and set the audio mode to radio, playlist, or choose from about a dozen sleep sounds. The sleep timer needs to be set manually, but the audio will stop as scheduled and not interfere with any of the alarms that are set.
Another great feature of Wake Smarter is the voice control. On the main clock face screen, there is a microphone icon. When tapped, Wake Smarter understands a limited number of voice commands such as “time,” “date,” “weather,” or “Facebook.” Wake Smarter will then read out what you’ve asked for. The text-to-speech function does quite well with difficult words and it’s quite understandable. There is even some level of customization of volume, pitch, and speed for the voice to make it suit your ear.
With all these options and features, navigating has the potential to be a problem, but not so with Wake Smarter. The main clock screen has just three icons to interact with. And even the full-featured Settings screen has only four main icons to find what you’re looking for. They are clearly marked and easily understood as to what they control. You shouldn’t find yourself getting lost in complex menu structures here.
Wake Smarter is a fantastic alarm clock app. It comes with it’s own set of sounds and backgrounds. The features and options include something for everyone. But the voice control and text-to-speech feature sets this clock app apart and make it worth the $2.99 price tag.

With Apple’s New iPad 3 sporting a Retina Display and most developers updating their apps to accommodate the higher resolution screen, it was only a matter of time before major apps such as the Netflix app and Apple’s own apps got the upgrade to Retina Display quality.
Apple has approved the update for the Netflix application which will now utilize the new display in all of its menus, its app icon, and many other small parts of the app. Netflix also promised via their Twitter account that they will also be including HD streaming very soon.
The @Netflix iPad App now has high resolution icons and images, enhancing Netflix on the new iPad, HD video to follow later. Enjoy!
Alongside the Netflix application, Apple’s iTunes Movie Trailers app was also updated, bringing full Retina quality to the HD movie trailers in the app. Apple’s movie trailer service was strictly limited to iTunes, but Apple released an app to bring movie trailers to the iOS platform. Apple’s iTunes Movie Trailer works on both Wi-Fi and LTE, however, users on a limited data plan could find themselves running out of data rather fast if used for long duration.
]]> https://touchreviews.net/itunes-movie-trailers-netflix-app-updated-ipad-3-retina-display/feed/ 2Apple has opened up a new section in the iTunes App Store that highlights some of the Retina Enabled apps for the New iPad 3. On March 7th, Apple announced the New iPad, with high resolution Retina Display, A5X chip and an updated camera.
The section is called “Great Apps for the New iPad” and takes advantage of the higher resolution display of the New iPad. Games in the “Great Apps for the New iPad” section include Flight Control Rocket, Sky Gamblers, Infinity Blade II. Also listed are apps such as Tweetbot and Evernote.
The third gen iPad has already launched in many countries including the United States and is now available in very limited quantities. The new iPad now supports the highest resolution on a mobile device and as Apple explained it has more pixels than a full HDTV. The display also improves the saturation and makes photos, text and games look amazing on 9.7 inch display.
Even though the overall design hasn’t seen any major changes Apple continues to dominate the tablet market with a product design that is almost one year old. iPad (third generation) has witnessed huge demand and even after initial shipping delays Apple has recorded new sales record for the new iPad.
]]> https://touchreviews.net/retina-enabled-ipad-3-games-featured-apple-app-store/feed/ 3There’s been a double dose of great news for Twitter, and more specifically, Tweetbot fans today as not only were Tweetbot users rewarded with a huge update but also got the news that many of them were waiting for in the form of the release of Tweetbot for iPad.
Tweetbot 2.0 for the iPhone list of updates include in-line thumbnails of images, 5 minute auto-refresh of your timeline and much more. A full list of the new features can be read here and are included as a free update to those who have already purchased Tweetbot.
This version comes with many significant improvements to the Timeline and Direct Messages. Here are the major changes in more detail:
- Updated timeline view
- Image thumbnails in timeline
- Links now colored and single-tappable
- “Retweeted by” bar now integrated and tappable
- Cell colors adjusted for better contrast
- New direct message view.
- Redesigned “New Tweets” bar (Can be dismissed by tap and configured in Settings > Display)
- Timed auto-refresh (timeline, mentions, and DM’s will refresh every 5 minutes)
- Readability added as mobilizer service
- Much improved tweet replies view
- Links in user’s bio now tappable
- “Huge” font size option in Settings > Display
- Improved scrolling performance
The even bigger news is the immediate release of Tweetbot for iPad which brings all of the wonderful personality of the iPhone version to the big screen. It’s not a universal app so if you already have the iPhone version you’ll need to pay out another $3 for the iPad version but after just a few hours use I can definitely say that it’s worth it.
]]> https://touchreviews.net/tweetbot-updated-finally-ipad/feed/ 1Setting up your account is as simple as entering your Twitter username and password and within seconds you’ve be seeing your timeline in Twittelator Neue clean, clear and fast interface.
The main timeline flows beautifully up and down the screen in both vertically and horizontally and also includes some simple, subtle yet effective animations when you refresh your timeline or fully load the inline displayed pictures, yes, that’s right, inline displayed photos.
This is one of the best features of the application. Any tweet that includes a picture will display a slice of the image below it. This image will also scroll as the timeline scrolls and then by tapping it the image will open up full screen, it works great.
You can also turn on a feature where the profile image of all the Twitter ‘celebrities’ will also show in the same way, however if you follow a lot of them it will bet very repetitive and unnecessary.
The other great feature, that in my opinion every Twitter app should include, is the inclusion of Tweet Marker which lets you synchronise your timeline between devices. This is invaluable if you use Twitter across multiple devices, as long as all the apps use Tweet Marker of course!
Scrolling between your Timeline, Direct Messages, Mentions is just a swipe away as they appear as multiple panels that you can slide between. You can also add additional panels to your time line such as Searches or Lists and swipe between those too.
All the normal features are included including the ability to post to multiple Twitter accounts at the same time and Facebook but it’s the small things that really impress me about this app such as the subtle sounds as you navigate around and the animations that give this app a real professional feel to it.
Unfortunately for me at least there is one major omission from this app that will probably prevent it from being my goto Twitter application and that’s push notifications. For me these are a requirement, I want to know immediately I’m responded to or I receive a Direct Message and so without that I’m always going to have to keep a Twitter app on my iPhone that provides that.
With all that said though I won’t be deleting Twitterlator Neue from my iPhone, it’s speed, sleek design and in-line pictures make it just to good to give up.
If you want to find out more you can head over to www.twittelator.com to watch a video of the app or get it from the App Store here for just $1.99.

Tweet Speaker is very simple, it simply reads your Twitter stream to you. Starting off you need to sign into your Twitter account, it also handles multiple accounts, and you can then either choose your timeline, mentions or one of your Twitter lists, with one of those options selected the Tweets will be loaded and you then have multiple options.
If you like you can simply read your Tweets, scrolling left and right, you also have the ability to reply, favorite and retweet. The main feature however is activated via the Play button at the bottom of the screen. Pressing that button launches the app into action and the Stephen Hawking like voice will start reading your tweets to you. It’s a little odd to hear it to begin with and the translation is not always on the money. If you are finding it difficult to understand the voice you can slow it down, or speed it up, as appropriate.
The voice will include the name of the person that is tweeting, recognizes re-tweets, replies and links which puts everything in context, it works well and can be very funny hearing your tweets read out to you, especially when it gets some of the pronunciations wrong!
The app will also output to Apple TV if you want your tweets spoken out-loud to everyone and the final option is to choose a different voice. Unfortunately there are no other voices to choose from at present but the fact that the app is ready to accommodate them is a great sign.
Tweet Speaker supports Tweet Marker too so if you utilize this feature as I do via Tweetbot and Twitteriffic then this is a great addition to ensure that you don’t have to re-read, or in this case listen to, tweets that you’ve read before.
When you initially launch the app and haven’t registered your Twitter account yet you can access a News stream of the latest breaking news which is nice, however this is not accessible once you’ve registered your account. It would be nice to be able to access other people’s public lists, timelines and trending topics. The other option I’d like to see is the ability to have it automatically read your tweets when new ones arrive, at present you have to manually refresh and hit play again.
Overall though Tweet Speaker is a great app that presents your Tweets in a new and unique way and I can’t wait to see what new features and voices are provided with future updates.
Tweet Speaker is available in the App Store now for the iPhone at just $1.99.

On Wednesday, Apple’s Online Store went down briefly and returned with new Twitter and Facebook integration. The Mac Pro selection page as well as the iPod Classic page has now changed to incorporate a drop down menu, that allows users to post a link to the product on either Twitter or Facebook.
The new menu allow users to edit the posting before publishing on the social media sites. Other product pages, including the iPhone and iPod pages have not received this new Twitter and Facebook integration. Apple has been slowly integrating it’s products into the social networking sites, first starting this off by posting product videos on their YouTube page, and eventually integrating Twitter into iOS 5 and now this.
Apple is beginning to utilize social media in order to market its products and build up a more modern perspective to its customers. Apple’s new strategy is a very smart one indeed, something that Apple has neglected in the past. This new shift in Apple’s product awareness could help the company in gaining more customers in the long run.
]]> https://touchreviews.net/apple-social-twitter-facebook-links-online-store/feed/ 0Tweet Hunt – Celebirdies Review: You can’t get away from Twitter these days, it’s everywhere. And now it’s being created into a game thanks to the range of Tweet Hunt games, and specifically in this case the celebirdies version which adds the twist of enabling the tweets of celebrities in the game as you play.
So how does Tweet Hunt – Celebirdies integrate the tweets? The game is a simple game of target practice where you take aim with a slingshot in an effort to shoot down birds which are tweets from the specific celebrity that is part of the level you are playing.
There are 4 game types to play through Celebirdies, Top Trends, My Tweeps and Practice. Anyone familiar with Twitter will be familiar with the content of the first 3 game types. Celebirdies uses the tweets of Twitters famous and infamous, inc. Ashton Kucther, Donald Trump and Kanye West to name but a few while Top Trends uses the real time trending topics of the time that you play.
Both of these game modes can be used without having a Twitter account, however if you wish to play with your Twitter stream and followers you must sign in with your Twitter account so that the game can access your Twitter stream.
So what is the game actually like? Each game type is pretty similar, a whole bunch of birds will launch onto your screen float around for a bit and then float off and it’s your task to shoot them down before they fly off the screen. The birds fly in different routes and get progressively faster so you need to be quick on the draw as you pull back your slingshot and launch your ammunition towards them.
If you strike enough birds down you will move onto the next round and the number of rounds between the levels vary. Each level ends with a battle against a single bird which you will have to hit multiple times before the time runs out to progress.
At various times a Twitter Fail Whale will also float across the back of the screen and successfully hitting it will result in all active birds being shot down in a single swipe. As you play you will earn points and while some of the celebirdies are unlocked by completing the levels some of the others are unlocked by spending the points to unlock them.
While the game won’t be winning any awards for it’s graphics they are effective enough as are the sound effects and music. The use of live Twitter information is a nice twist but the game gets a little monotonous after a while and the novelty wears a little thin pretty quickly. What is nice and is something that always goes down well with me is that Tweet Hunt is a Universal app meaning that with a single purchase you can play it on either your iPhone or iPad.

Keeping a track of all the latest stories being posted by all the sites and blogs you love can be a difficult task. But, if you use Google Reader to manage your RSS feeds then Mr. Reader ($3.99, App Store) is a must have app for your iPad. The app takes full advantage of the large screen display of iPad and features smart gestures which offers enhanced reading experience.
When you launch the app you would need to enter your Google Reader account username and password. Once your account is verified Mr. Reader for iPad will synchronize your feeds, starred and shared items, tags and friends. The developer has done a great job in making sure that the interface stays true to the official version of Google Reader on the web and yet offer unique features which makes reading the feeds a lot more efficient. We really liked the minimalistic two column UI design where all your feeds are on the left and the reading pane (Article View) on the right.
You tap on the left pane to select the feed you want to read and the right pane displays the list of all the unread and read items. You are presented with a summary of each story and each item has quick controls that allow you to tag, access service menu (more details in a bit) mark story as read, starred or shared. So, in essence if you just wanted to browse through the feeds and not really get into the details the app has you covered with ‘Mark all as read’ option too.
If you prefer reading each article in detail all you need to do is tap on the summary and the app will offer the complete RSS content. There are many publishers who only allow a preview of their content while the full article can be read online. Mr. Reader features inbuilt browser so you don’t have to exit the app to read the full story. When reading the articles the app presents you with four options to choose from. You can view the stories in RSS, Web, Mobilizer or Readability format and the app even remembers your last choice for each feed. Once you have read the story navigating to the next one is as easy as pulling the page down to go to previous article or pull up to go next article (like pull to refresh in Twitter app).
The app has a plethora of options to customize your reading and sharing experience. You can change the font, text size and even the most used services to share or saving content for later. Mr. Reader comes with four pre-installed themes which vary in color scheme and in addition to these options you can even change the sounds of different actions.
Image caching for offline viewing is also supported that worked just as advertised in our tests. From folder creation to renaming the feed the app allows you to manage and organize your feeds too.
Now, back to service menu which I touched briefly earlier. Wouldn’t it be great if the app that helps you discover great articles also allows you to use your favorite sharing, saving or bookmarking service? The ‘Service Menu Composition’ is where you can configure and choose preferred browser to open links, send to social networking and bookmarking sites, allow you to create tasks / notes and even save the article for later using supported third party apps.
Mr. Reader is an all-in-one RSS reader app which brings advanced reading and feed management features to your iPad. If you’ve never used RSS feeds before this app is a perfect way to create a list of your favorite sites so that you never miss out important updates and news.

The high resolution images were reportedly found in the framework for integrating Twitter into Apple’s upcoming software update. The size was reported to be the double of 1,024×768 which implied that iPad 3 with retina display could support 2,048×1,536 resolution display.
Since, similar rumors made rounds when such images were found in iBooks app for first gen tablet we can’t be sure if this is strong indicator of retina display in third gen iPad.
Rumors about iPad 3 launch this September have been widely discussed but no credible evidence has been uncovered as yet. DigiTimes previously published a story which claimed that Apple has begun certifying parts for the next iPad and is looking at unveiling the product in 2012.
Apple could be preparing a high resolution display for the next iPad and it will be interesting to see what the company has in store for us.

Apple gave us an overview of Mac OS X Lion, announced iOS 5 and finally unveiled the upcoming cloud based service cloud iCloud. You can now stream the video online on Apple’s website (link at the bottom).
Mac OS X Lion will be available for purchase from the Mac App Store for $29.99 in July and iOS 5 is expected to be available this fall. iCloud is closely tied to the new software update and will provide seamless syncing between devices and the content you access most often.
It was widely believed that iOS 5 will introduce revamped notifications and include system wide Twitter integration and that’s exactly what Apple did. In addition to these the Cupertino based company has introduced iMessage (think BBM for iOS devices) which will allow you send text messages, photos videos, contacts and more to your friends and family who own an iOS device.
Apple has greatly improved the camera app and also introduced two new iOS apps called Newsstand and Reminders. One of the best features about iOS 5 is that now you’ll be able to wirelessly sync your devices with Mac or PC so no more using the same old USB cable.
There was no announcement related to new hardware so no iPhone 5 / 4S during this years WWDC keynote event.
Head over to Apple.com to stream the WWDC keynote event and let us know what you think about iOS 5 and iCloud.
]]> https://touchreviews.net/apple-posts-wwdc-2011-keynote-video-online/feed/ 0Unlike previous WWDC keynote events where Apple would announce next gen iPhone this year the company is focussing on software. iOS 5, the next generation software update for iOS devices, will be previewed during Steve Jobs keynote later today.
It is widely believed that Apple will completely revamp the current obtrusive notification system with something which is more elegant and user friendly. The company may have hired Peter Hajas the developer of a popular jailbreak tweak which replaces Apple’s notification system with an unobtrusive way of showing and managing notifications below the status bar.
Now, TechCrunch has published a photo of what they believe could be the new notification system in iOS 5. The publication later updated their post saying that according to their sources its the “right idea”.
Notifications that come down from the top bar could be how Apple ends up doing things in iOS 5. After all, this would mimic already existing functionality — when tethering, a blue strip appears along the top; when on the phone, it’s a green strip. Might notifications (or at least Twitter notifications) produce a gray strip?
Twitter integration is expected to be major part of the keynote event. The new image upload service announced by the social networking site is believed to be tied to photos app on iOS devices natively. If rumors about Twitter being integrated at system level turn out to be true then we could be seeing much deeper integration and not just limited to uploading photos.
Robert Scoble recently shared that he has actual knowledge about iOS 5 and Twitter integration and expects it to be “huge”.
Next week will be a huge week for those of us who have lived on Twitter for last few years. Apple is building Twitter in deeply into iOS 5.
Going by what Apple thinks about processes running in the background it would be unlikely for the company to introduce widgets which require constant connection to stay updated. However, the rumor mill has been consistently speculating that widgets would indeed make its appearance in iOS 5.
]]> https://touchreviews.net/ios-5-notifications-twitter-integration-widgtes-wwdc/feed/ 1Twitter is completely hauling out it’s old web app design so that when you now head over to Twitter on an iPhone or iPod touch, it is very close in design to the actual app in the Apple app store. This isn’t very surprising considering that Twitter is closely following in the steps that Facebook took in redesigning their mobile site.
At first, Facebook rolled out an update for their iPhone app, then they completely redesigned the mobile site to resemble the app. This seems to be what Twitter is planning to do. There is a downside though, not all Twitter users are able to see the mobile site yet. Twitter is slowly rolling it out to users across the world, allowing only a select group to see and interact with the new redesign.
We want you to be able to access Twitter no matter where you are; regardless of what device you use; or, whether you prefer to access Twitter through a mobile application or the browser. Today, we’re starting to roll out a new version of twitter.com for mobile devices. This web app allows us to provide a high-quality and consistent Twitter experience on high-end touchscreen devices – whether or not an official Twitter application is available. It was built from the ground up for smartphones and tablets, which have more advanced browsers that support the latest web technologies, including HTML5.
Those who have used the new design say it runs much more fluidly and looks much better than the previous design. We’ll just have to wait and see when all users get the new redesign.
[via TiPb] ]]> https://touchreviews.net/twitter-new-web-app-design-iphone-html5/feed/ 2Tapbots popularly known for their iPhone app called Convertbot have been successful in creating buzz and excitement around their apps as they make their apps beautifully intuitive and unique in design.
On Wednesday, Tapbots released their latest app which is a Twitter client for iPhone and iPod touch called “Tweetbot – A Twitter Client with Personality”. The news about the release spread like wildfire among avid Twitter users and our timeline (@Touch_Reviews) was quickly populated with users praising the beautiful interface.
In less than 24 hours when we checked the top paid social networking app category on the App Store it was no surprise that Tweetbot was at number one position. So, we went ahead and compared the official app called ‘Twitter’ (Free) and Tweetbot ($1.99).
We compared the user interface and the features of both apps. Overall we felt that at its core Tweetbot is just like the official Twitter app but with exceptional design, unique implementation of gestures and smart use of space available.
So, should you pay $1.99 for an app when an equally powerful free version exists on the App Store? Read on and find out.
When you launch Tweetbot for iPhone you can instantly notice beautiful design elements which offers something different when compared with apps which provide native app experience on iOS. While the official client lets you browse trends or search for tweets before you login, in order to use Tweetbot you must first login or create an account. Twitter for iPhone will allow you to create an account within the app providing a native experience while Tweetbot will send you to twitter’s mobile site in an embedded browser to signup.
Both apps support multiple accounts and once you’ve set up your account you’ll begin to notice some major differences in the way you interact with the app.
Tweetie (now Twitter for iPhone) originally brought ‘release to refresh’ and swipe left on an update to reveal more options. Since, then we have seen these gestures in many apps on the App Store. Tweetbot have gone an extra mile here and added their own version of such smart gestures.
In the official app you swipe left or right to reveal options to retweet, reply, mark favorite, view user profile, attachment and more. In Tweetbot you tap on a particular tweet to reveal a ‘drawer’ with similar options but the developers didn’t just stop there. If you swipe to the right you will be able to view the conversation and if you swipe to the left you can view few related tweets, this works with mentions too.
Your timeline is packed with features so you can perform many actions without ever requiring to tap through different screens to finally do what you wanted to do. For example, just double tap a particular tweet in your timeline to activate links, tap and hold to reveal options to copy, email, translate or post link to tweet. There’s even a triple tap gesture which can be configured to instantly reply, retweet, favorite or translate. Even though it’s great to have more options and customize the behavior of the app with new gestures, in our initial testing ‘triple tap’ didn’t feel very intuitive as we felt it was easier to reveal the drawer and then select an option.
The double tap gesture activates links and opens the drawer with more options and this exposed one of Tweetbot’s weaknesses. If a particular tweet has a link and you just wanted to double tap to view ‘tweet detail’ then you need to be careful about where you are tapping. If you accidentally double tapped on a link (intending to just view tweet detail) then the app will misunderstand the gesture and open the URL instead. When a twitter app makes links active in a timeline it is bound to face this issue. I stopped using Twittelator Pro as I would often end up accidentally tapping on a link when I just wanted to view tweet detail. This is where the official app shines as it does not have any active links in the timeline and you must first tap to view tweet detail and then if interested view the URL mentioned.
We found that user profile is very well organized in Tweetbot when compared with Twitter for iPhone. It makes it absolutely easy to add new users to lists, view users public lists and also has a nice blue notification on the top which tells you if a particular user is following you or not.
Tweetbot provides 5 actions in the tab bar whereas Twitter for iPhone gives you 4 actions. This alone makes the app experience a whole lot better in Tweetbot. Not only you have more ‘visible’ options but you can also customize them by tapping and holding any one of the last two sections in the tab bar and select from retweets by others, search, favorites or lists.
We found composing a new tweet to be easier in Twitter for iPhone than in Tweetbot. The official app features handy shortcuts to access quick features like adding @ username, # tag and location was just a tap away. However, in Tweetbot you first have to tap on an option button which further reveals such basic functionality which should been accessible on the bar above the keyboard.
Another interesting observation we made was that when you want to reply to tweet with more than one users then Tweetbot will give you an option to either ‘reply to all’ or just ‘reply’. This is done more intuitively on the official app. When you hit reply it just mentions all the usernames in that particular tweet and highlights the second one so that you can quickly delete it in case you want to reply one person.
Both apps support saving of drafts but in the official app once you saved a draft you had to dig into the options to retrieve it but Tweetbot makes it a whole lot easier. When you are composing a new tweet the option button above the keyboard in Tweetbot allows you to quickly browse through your drafts and choose the one you wish to use. This makes draft management much more usable and efficient.
Direct Messages in Tweebot just like the official app appear in conversation view. Twitter for iPhone uses SMS composing UI for direct messages whereas Tweetbot uses a consistent user interface where you write a DM just like you compose a tweet.
When you want to send a new DM in Tweetbot you will see ‘Find People’ option which is strange since in the official version you can instantly search for your followers, pick one and send a DM. Whereas in Tweetbot you first type in the username or just the name in the search field, then tap search and then select the user you intended to DM. It was surprising to note that Tapbots didn’t implement a simpler user interface to DM a particular user.
If you use lists on Twitter to follow particular interests then you are going to love Tweetbot. The app makes it really easy to switch between your timeline with everyone you follow and replace it with any list you created. This really makes lists come alive and will also encourage users to make more lists as you can easily switch your timelines.
The app also allows you to choose preferred service for URL shortening, image/video uploading and Read It Later account.
We were very impressed with the overall design and thoughtful implementation of some of the core features of Twitter.
However, the app is still not perfect. Tweetbot does not feature push notifications whereas the official version which is a free app offers this feature. Tapbots say that you can configure push notifications via boxcar which is a free app but we feel notifications should be a part of the app rather than having the user download another app.
We didn’t find a way to delete direct messages and the ability to search nearby tweets. While it’s good to have gestures like swipe right to reveal conversation and swipe left to show related tweets, most of the times no results showed up for related tweets or conversation which in turn uses your API limit. So, instead of having a user guess this, there could be notification which indicates that a particular update has a related tweet or is a part of a conversation.
So, now we will try to answer the question which most of you probably wanted to ask right at the beginning. Is Tweetbot worth $1.99 when the official app is offered for free.
The answer to that question depends on how you plan to use a Twitter client for iPhone and what you expect from an iOS app.
If you prefer beautiful and colorful user interface with all the bells and whistles then your obvious choice would be Tweetbot. But, it doesn’t stop there. Tweetbot caters to all the needs of an avid Twitter user who wants access to smart gestures for quick access to basic functions. And then it also caters to more advanced users who maintain active lists and prefer their timelines being more organized.
On the other hand, if you just use Twitter for normal use and want to just focus on updating your timeline, reading follower updates then the official app is still a great option. It does feature some of the more advanced features but Tweetbot just does it more beautifully. However, if you can’t do without native support for push notifications and don’t use boxcar then the official client is a better option for you.

Today TechCrunch reported that Tweetie 2 disappeared from App Store and now we are hearing that ‘Twitter for iPhone’ is live. The app is not showing up for everyone, however many are reporting that the app is now available.
The principal analyst at Ovum, Eden Zoller, highlighted the fact that Twitter must evaluate its role in software development and consider the tension between developers and platform owners.
However, Twitter needs to be very careful not to alienate the developer community as they drive innovation for the service and also traffic. It should be remembered that applications account for 75% of all tweets.
Developers do not want to go to the trouble and cost of building an app if Twitter itself is going to make a big play for same area. This is exactly what Twitter appears to be doing with its in-house applications for smartphones, and the Tweetie application it acquired in April stands out as a case in point.
It will be interesting to see how the app has changed and what new features have been added. If you have Tweetie 2 installed on your iPhone then you should be noticing a ‘free update’ in the App Store.

]]> https://touchreviews.net/twitter-for-iphone-ipad-live/feed/ 2IM+ for iPhone/iPod touch is a complete solution for all your instant messaging needs!
What’s new
– New Inbox view, now with message preview
– New bubbles in chat dialogs
– Sending video on iPhone 3G S
– Twitter: On/Off Push for Friends Timeline
– Twitter: link shrinking
– Twitter: Retweet
– Yahoo Japan support
With iPhone OS 3.0 now you can install up-to 180 apps on your iPhone and iPod touch but that still doesn’t weaken the need for apps which offer unified experience. The iPhone OS still lacks an efficient way of app management , while spotlight is great, the inability to run applications in the background highlights the importance of apps offering all-in-one features.
Push notification has brought a whole new meaning to apps and games on iPhone and has transformed ‘instant’ messaging into real time messaging.
IM+ offers all major instant messaging clients which include Google Talk, Yahoo, MSN, AOL, ICQ, MySpace,Facebook, Skype Chat, Jabber and basic functionality of a Twitter app. Setting up one or multiple accounts for the same service can be done by simply providing your login details. The app allows you to set your status as Online, Away, Invisible, Offline, Custom Message or can use your location as your status. However, strangely it does not allow you to set individual status for different services. Contacts appear under various categories; Ungrouped, Twitter, Friends, General etc. Favorites tab offers an easy way to add people who you chat with frequently and eliminates the need to scroll or search.
The overall chat interface is very neat and chat dialogs appear in bubble interface. You can show/hide the keyboard and tap the upload icon on the left side to send a photo, location or voice message. Sharing photos while chatting is a great feature and you can change active chats with a simple swipe and continue with the discussion from where you left it. IM+ supports a built-in browser to easily access web links or browse internet avoiding the need to close app and use Safari. You can also customize your chat background by selecting available wallpapers or choose any picture from your photo albums and select your preferred screen orientation to Autorotate or lock Portrait or Landscape.
SHAPE Services has tried to bundle a Twitter app in it’s effort to offer all-in-one app but in-spite of a great user interface I don’t think it can replace Tweetie, a Twitter app requires an interface which is different than that of instant messaging app, the retweet and reply options are too small and close which highly limits it’s use as a twitter app. Push notification works great on IM+ and sends updates in near real time.
IM+ is a fantastic instant messaging app which is truly All-in-one!

If you haven’t heard of Twitter you must be living under a rock or somewhere even more desolate, isolated and cut off from the modern world! But presuming that you have heard of Twitter and that you have an iPhone or iPod Touch then you have probably noticed that there are an avalanche of Twitter apps for you to choose from. A lot of these apps are free while some ask for your hard earned cash in exchange for there wares and one of those is Twitterena+ Professional Edition, the older brother of its 99c version Twitterena. So what does the extra $3 get you?
twitterena+ professional edition unique features
✔ Facebook integration
✔ multiple account support
✔ custom tweeting background
✔ quick watch users
✔ easy profile location update
✔ priority customer support
Over and above the $1 version you’ll also get to customize your background, the ability to update your profile location and priority customer support (which I’ve never needed) but to be honest the big additional features are Facebook integration and multiple account support which are both integrated very well.
At any point when you are Tweeting you can sign in to your Facebook account and choose either to Tweet and update your Facebook status one Tweet at a time or fix your Facebook settings so that every update will go to both Twitter and Facebook. As a user of both platforms having the ability to update both at the same time is worth the money alone.
Multiple accounts by adding and then switching between them, so if you are expecting to be able to tweet from multiple accounts at the same time or see a stream of multiple accounts you won’t get what you’re looking for.
The basics are all covered well. If you want to send a quick Tweet that is easily accessed via Tweet button in the top left corner of the screen. From the Tweet page you can add any of your saved photo’s via TwitPic, and a location via GPS or you can easily access your ‘Tweeps’, (a list of all your Twitter friends), to include them in your Tweet.
Across the bottom of the screen are quick access links to your Tweets, Mentions, Messages, Favorites and Search. All are handled in the standard way with the ability to drill through to links and other included Twitterers at the tap of a button. The full Twitter experience is completed by the ability to Search both by keyword and location and the ability to see the current Twitter trends too.
There is a lot to unwrap in this Twitter app and you clearly get a lot of bang for your buck including themes and customizations which is always a good addition to any app. You can also control how you are alerted to new Tweets, the size of the text, background image and the frequency of refreshes. One of the nicest things however though is the ability to use Twitterena+ Pro Edition either vertically or horizontally making Tweeting even simpler thanks to the larger keyboard.
If you’re not a power user of Twitter, one of the less fully featured apps will probably suffice, but if you are looking for the full Twitter experience then you should definitely give Twitterena+ Pro Edition a look.
