Following the release of Apple’s iPhone in 2007, Apple Inc. (AAPL) experienced heavy adoption of its first smartphone, leading to the release of the second generation phone. After initial support for web apps AAPL also announced the App Store, which revolutionized the landscape of gaming on mobile devices. Many third-party app developers created apps tailored to the iPhone and iPod touch, and gave the iOS platform boost and rival with Nintendo, Microsoft, and other gaming platforms.

On Thursday, it was revealed that Apple has hired former Xbox Live marketing executive to help grow iPad and iPhone gaming initiative. With an update to his LinkedIn profile, Microsoft Marketing Manager for Xbox UK, Robin Burrowes, revealed that he has been hired to help push gaming on iPhone and iPad to further success.

Burrowes tenure at Microsoft saw him work on Xbox for roughly seven years, where he was most recently responsible for all product, business and marketing management of Xbox LIVE in Europe, the Middle East, and Africa. For Apple, he’s the latest in a series of high-profile British gaming recruits, following the hire of Nintendo’s public relation’s chief Robert Saunders last year, as well as Nick Grange — who also at one point ran public relations for Xbox, as well as for gaming heavyweights Activision and Electronics Arts.

Microsoft released the Xbox 360 and took over a large percentage of the consale gaming market, with services such as Xbox Live. Apple gave the company some competition with the iPhone 3G and the App Store and has now hired one of Microsoft’s employees to try and get Apple even higher share in the gaming market.

Apple currently has over 550,000 apps in the App Store, 20% of which are games, making the hiring of Burrowes an obvious choice for Apple. iPads, iPhones, and iPods are gaining traction in the mobile gaming market, being considered portable gaming platforms, competing against other systems such as the Nintendo DS and PlayStation Portable.

Deer Hunter: African Safari for iPad [rating: 4/5]

First there was Deer Hunter, then Deer Hunter for iPad, then Deer Hunter: African Safari and now Deer Hunter: African Safari for iPad.  They do say if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it and that certainly appears to be the case with Glu’s popular hunting series.

If you’ve played any of the series before then you can skip the next few paragraphs as nothing has changed with the fourth in the series, however if you are new to the game read on.

As the name suggests Deer Hunter: African Safari for iPad places you in the heart of Africa with a gun in hand to bag yourself so big trophies and while there are African deer in your sights it’s the glamour animals that really catch the eye.

The main part of the game is the Safari where over three different locations you are challenged to kill a range of animals to achieve a given score.  Scoring is based on the size of the animal comparative to it’s breed so going for the elephant is not always the best choice even if your instinct tells you otherwise. Points will be lost should you leave a wounded animaanon the field when the day is over.

Navigating your safari is done via your GPS, touching a location on your map or dragging your finger across the screen will move you to that destination.  Should you get within range of a target the animals prints will appear on your map and if you aren’t all ready shown what the animal is you can move towards the animal prints again to see what it is.  If you like the type of animal, and its size, you can select to enter the field of action, choose your location and take aim.

Deer Hunter African Safari for iPad_1

Once you are in the field the cross hair of your gun will appear on screen.  You can control your aim by dragging your finger across the screen, not only to take aim on any given animal but also to scan the full playing area that goes beyond either side of the iPad’s screen.  Once you’ve decided on which animal you are going to take down you can zoom in and use the ‘steady’ button to minimize the amount of shake.  With the animal firmly in your sights you can tap the screen anywhere to fire.  You can customize the control to enable a dedicated fire button but I found the ability to tap anywhere on the screen to work the best.

You have a full day to bag yourself 5 animals and should your score minus any deductions total the target score then you will unlock the next Safari.  There are 12 levels to unlock in total with 4 difficulties spread over 3 locations and they will take you a while to complete thanks to the challeging nature of the scores you’ll need to beat.

As you progress you will unlock access to new weapons, accessories and skills that help you aim, shoot and remain un-detected by the animals.  It’s very important as in Deer Hunter: African Safari some animals will charge to devastating effect. If you don’t want to work for your rewards you can purchase up to 3 add-on packs which will enable all the additional features from the start.  To be honest though I didn’t find them necessary and got more satisfaction from unlocking the items myself.

Deer Hunter African Safari for iPad

The game looks as great as ever, not as good as on the iPhone 4 but still the African plains look great on the iPads screen and for the most part the animals look realistic too. In game menu’s are clear and easy to navigate and the sounds are appropriately authentic sounding throughout the game too.

As hunting games go I know no better, however Glu appear to be taking the easy options with these titles.  Considering that the iPhone and iPad games are the same I see no reason why they shouldn’t be a universal app, if not then why not add some additional features that take advantage of the additional real estate that the iPad offers.

If you already have Deer Hunter: African Safari for your iPhone there is minimal reason to buy this version for your iPad, however if you are new to the genre and want to bag yourself some big game then you can’t go far wrong with this excellent hunting game.

MultiPong for iPad [rating: 5/5]

I was introduced to gaming many, many years ago with a Binatone TV Gaming system that allowed my brothers and I to fight over a handful of pixels on the TV screen instead of over Subbuteo, draughts or who gets to eat the last Jammy Dodger.

Where Pong of the 80’s was a simple 2 tone game of ‘tennis’ or ‘squash’, MultiPong for iPad is a gorgeous, eye popping single or multi-player fight for survival where the battle is played over a small stainless steel ball.

As the name suggests the game is for up to 1 to 4 players, all on a single iPad, which makes it a great game to show off the iPad’s capabilities to friends and family.

The two player mode is where the game excels, unlike the basic two games in the old school original version MultiPong for iPad provides 5 variations Pong in the form of Classic, Flash, Crazy, Baby and Death Ball.

All five variations offer something a little different, but my favorites are Crazy and Death-ball where the action just keeps getting more and more frantic whether it’s the multitude of bonuses or the multitude of balls, there is always something going on.

The aforementioned bonuses are another thing that makes this different from the original Pong. Across the various game modes these bonus discs appear randomly on screen enabling the standard extra lives and longer/shorter paddles to the more extreme items such as time warp and gravity.

The physics of the game work great as do the controls which are as simple dragging your finger from side to side along whichever side of the screen is yours. Even when four players are playing things don’t get crowded which is what makes this game so much fun.

If you want to add extra oomph to the graphics you can add additional skins for 99 cents per skin, although to be honest I didn’t feel the need to buy them for the game isn’t all about the graphics, it’s all about the game play and simplicity.

Additional value is added via the local leader boards across all the game modes, it would be nice if these were global leader boards but that’s not the case at present.

If you want a simple game of pong that will keep both you and your friends entertained, MultiPong for iPad is the game for you.

Kuboku [rating: 4/5]

Sudoku’s are a lot like Marmite, you either love them or you hate them, that’s how decisive they are. For me I fell on the side of love ever since I first started playing them in my daily newspaper.

For those of you that missed the rise of the Sudoku puzzle throughout the western world a Sudoku is a cross between a Word Search and a Crossword Puzzle but with numbers. The challenge with a Sudoku is to complete an 8 x 8 grid of numbers where each number can only appear on each vertical or horizontal row once.

There are millions of puzzles and difficulties but Kuboku takes the game to a whole new level thanks to the extra dimension that the iPhone/iPad offers. For now, rather than completing an 8 x 8 grid your challenge is to complete an 8 x 8 x 8 cube instead!

This is not as difficult as it seems especially if you start out on the easiest of the three levels before moving up to the Medium and Hard puzzles.

The cube fills the majority of the screen and it can be rotated by simply dragging your finger across the screen allowing you to get an accurate look at the missing number and the corresponding cells that control the placement of the next number.

The three difficulty levels controls the number of missing numbers from the cube. The more numbers that are missing the more complex the puzzle will be. You are presented with finding the solution for one number at a time and if you can’t solve it right away you can use the arrow buttons to move to the next number or double tap the missing number that you want to solve next.

Only the relevant corresponding blocks to the number that you are attempting to solve are displayed by default. However if you wish to see the other numbers this can be done by holding down the appropriate button. This can help you, but can also sometimes hinder your solution!

Finding the right number quickly can earn you bonus points and completing a chain of correct numbers before the timer runs our grows the multiplier nicely. This adds additional pressure to playing Kuboku and takes it from being a sedate puzzle game to an edge of the seat challenge instead.

Games are selected randomly depending on the difficulty level you choose although if you find a particular puzzle enjoyable or wish to attempt to beat you previous score you can enter the number of the puzzle in to play that specific one.

Kuboku is a universal app too so for the $1.99 price tag you get to play Kaboku on both your iPhone and iPad should you have both. The game is the same on both devices and looks great on them both too.

The game is also Game Center enabled but only utilizes the leader boards to rank your scores against you, your friends and the world! Adding some achievements would certainly have been a nice addition.

Kuboku is a great twist on the classic sudoku puzzle and with 1000 challenging puzzles has enough to keep even the hardened puzzler entertained.

World Series of Poker HD for iPad [rating: 4.5/5]

Just under a year ago touchreviews.net reviewed World Series of Poker for the iPhone and iPod Touch. We really enjoyed the game especially the design and seamless online integration. Now the game has been ported to the iPhones younger and bigger brother the iPad.

For the most part the iPhone and iPad versions of the game are identical shifts makes my wonder what took Glu Mobile so long to release this iPad version of the game.

The game certainly does justice to the iPad’s larger screen. The game looks as good, if not better than the iPhones graphics, thanks to the iPads larger screen. From the videos that litter the game as introductions to the various events to the in game graphics and navigation screens the graphics make the game a pleasure to play. Everything is where you would expect it to be and during the game play there are often multiple options to each command you wish to complete.

Texas Hold ‘Em poker is not a difficult game to play, all players are dealt two cards and then five ‘community’ cards are dealt for everyone to share. Between the dealing of each card all the players get the opportunity to place bets depending on how strong you feel your hand is compared to that of your opponents. If you are new to the game there is a detailed help section although it is all text based.

The app will give you a small number of chips each day that you play but should you want to increase your number of chips additional ones can be purchased to increase your pot. However it must be remembered that the app is only for entertainment purposes only, so any money you spend on additional chips cannot be won back!

For the single player the Career Mode is where you will spend most of your time as you attempt to move through the seven locations winning as much virtual money as you can. While for those looking to play against all competitors you have the opportunity to play online against between either 6 or 9 randon players or thanks to the built in Game Center functionality you can play against any of your Game Center friends to see who comes out on top.

The Game Center integration also enables 28 achievements whichs adds additional value for your money. While the app is $4.99, a high price for some, the amount on offer in this app makes it worth while especially for serious poker fans.

The are two slight annoyances with WSOP HD the first is the fact that there are no additinal features in the iPad version of the game, the other is the inclusion of advertisements for some of Glu Mobile’s other games. While they are not overly intrusive it’s a little annoying to see them after paying five dollars for the app.

MMA by EA Sports [rating: 4.5/5]

My history of fighting games has been of the fantasy fighting type, from Tekken and Battle of Toshinden to Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter. The fantasy aspect of these games allows fighters to defy the laws of gravity and perform acts unknown to man and these features always made these games much more enjoyable for me. I’ve tried Mike Tyson’s Punch Out and Frank Bruno’s Boxing but neither appealed.

Now though boxing has been replaced by Mixed Martial Arts as the top fighting genre and so perhaps now is the time that a fighting game based on reality can actually compete with the fantasy titles of the genre.

The main part of MMA by EA Sports is the career mode where you can build your fighter as you see fit, from name, looks and hair to tattoos and skin tone you can either build a fighter in your own image or how you would like your image to be!

While it’s fun to make you fighter look like you getting on and fighting is what we’re here for. There are three modes of game-play, Exhibition gives you instant gratification as you are thrown straight into a battle while, challenge mode, as the name suggests, sets you a specific challenge which you must complete to unlock the profile of one of the MMA’s real life fighters.

The main fun in the game however is the Career mode, here you get to test your fighter against the best real MMA fighters in the world. As well as designing the look of you fighter he will have a set of stats that you can build to strengthen your fighters abilities. Health, stamina, speed, striking, grappling, submission and take-downs can all be updated independently so you can focus on a specific attribute dependent on your fighting style.

Fighting style is important as when building your fighter you have to choose its style, choosing the appropriate style will give an additional boost to the relevant abilities. These abilities can be built upon by training your fighter in one of four training ‘mini games’. Any one of Spar, Speed Bag, Heavy Bag and Lift Weights can be played between fights and depending on your success can add up to five points to your abilities. The games use a combination of speed, timing and accuracy using the touch screen, gestures and the accelerometer to succeed and they all add a nice additional challenge to the game. It would be nice of these games if these could be played separately too as both practice and to track high scores.

One you’ve completed your initial training you can take on your first opponent. You start ranked at 10th and your aim is to reach number one and the only way to do this is to beat the nine fighters above you.

Initially despite the brief hand on tutorial I found that I was unable to defeat even the first fighter. However, as soon as I realized that you had to weaken your opponent before you could use any of your submission moves, I made much better progress.

All the controls are gesture based which have been expertly implemented. Previous fighting games I’ve played have all been based on a d-pad and a variety of action buttons, however these gesture based controls where swiping and tapping the screen in various combinations result a range of punches, grabs and throws works very intuitively.

As we have come to expect with most EA games these days the graphics are second to none. The fighters look just like their real life counterparts right down to their tattooed bodies and the rings look like you are standing in one waiting to get your head knocked off of your neck.

Commentary is provided in the game but like most games much of it gets repeated which can get a little annoying at times. Hearing the rousing tones of Jimmy Lennon Jnr introduces the fighters is always welcome though. The range of intro music for your fighter is good though, although having the ability to pick the intro from a song in your iPhone’s library would have been a nice touch.

Career Mode in MMA by EA Sports is a little short and once you’ve built your fighter up and have learnt the basics you can move through the game relatively quickly. However the addition of the Challenge mode does add extra value for money. It would have been great to see a multi-player option so that you could battle it out with your friends but that is not to be.

Overall MMA by EA Sports is a great addition to the iPhones arsenal of fighting games. It’s certainly converted this fighter to the bone breaking, stomach churning, bare knuckle rawness that is Mixed Martial Arts fighting.

MMA beats all fighting games, hands down!

Most of these games however are big named games ported from other game systems, Reckless Racing however breaks that mold as it debuts onto Apple’s handheld device.

There have been top down racers before but none on a held device that matches the quality of Reckless Racing especially in the graphics department. The tracks may be small but they are beautifully formed and as you race around them it’s difficult not to notice the attention to detail that has been put into this game.

From the dust and dirt being spun up by the spinning tires, the water bubbling over rocks in the stream that you have to drive through at times and the detail in the buildings that crowd the track the game just sparkles, especially on the iPhone 4’s Retina Display. The beauty doesn’t deminish either when playing online or suffer from slow down which is good to see.

The sound, the music at least, could be pretty decisive, with a banjo laden track being repeatidly played throughout the game. This can be turned off however so if it does get on your nerves it can be easily switched of. The sound effects are effective too with the cars sounding suitably throaty as they charge around the off tracks.

The single player game is split into three modes, Dirt Rally, Hot Lap and Delivery. The first two pretty much speak for themselves, in Dirty Lap you race against either 4 or 6 AI controlled cars to win a race over a set number of laps while in Hot Lap it’s just you against the clock, and your ghost, as you race around the 5 tracks on your own.

One of the down sides to Reckless Racing is the number of tracks especially considering how small they are. Individually the size of the tracks is just perfect for the racing but overall having only five tracks, 10 if you count the reverse of them, is rather limiting and I certainly hope that more tracks become avialable in a future update.

The final game type is Delivery, a unique addition which tasks you with collecting trailers of goods and delivery them as quickly as possible. This mode is played on a new unique track and can be played over 3, 5 or 8 minutes at a time. Deliver the goods fast and you will be rewarded with more money. I liked this addition to the game and if more tracks are added to this mode too and it gets added to the multi-player option then it will make a great game even better.

So that brings me on to the multi-player option. Playing certain games against your friends and other real people online an make or break a game and so it is great to see online multi-player added to Reckless Racing from the word go. As mentioned previously the two modes available to play online are Dirt Rally and Hot Lap and the host of the game gets to choose which type of race you’ll be playing.

When playing online you are taken into a Lobby where all the hosted games are listed. Considering this game has only just launched I was pleased to see the amount of games available to join. Listed in the Lobby is the name of the race, entered by the host, and the current number of players. What’s not included is the type of race being played or whether the race is in progress or not. It would be nice to see these options available in the Lobby before entering the race.

There’s also no overall ranking or leagues to compete in so while racing online is smooth and has little or no lag in my experience the fact that there is no lasting reward to it other than race itself left it feeling a little lacking. That being said the online racing is fun and adds extra value to the overall gaming experience.

All of this however would amount to nothing if the controls weren’t up to the task. No worries there though either as there are five, yes five, sets of controls to choose from as well as the ability to choose auto accelerate and the sensitivity of your steering. Standard steering mode was my favorite, utilizing four separate buttons for left, right, accelerate and reverse seemed to offer the maximum level of control and dexterity, having id that though having tank, tilt, half wheel and whole wheel options will enable everyone the opportunity to find the right solution for them.

For some people used to paying no more than 99 cents for a game may see the $2.99 price tag two high, for me however it’s worth every cent and should further updates add more tracks and online rankings it while make this game easily my #1 game on the iPhone 4.

Samurai 2: Vengeance [rating: 4.5/5]

Back in July we reviewed a new game named Samurai: Way of the Warrior HD and were suitably impressed with it’s beautiful graphics, blood drench gore fest and wonderful Japanese environments. There were shortcomings, so I was interested to see how in less than 6 months does Samurai II: Vengeance match up to it’s predecessor?

The first major improvement is that the game is now a multi-device application which will work on both the iPhone/iPod touch and iPad for a single purchase. This means that the beautiful graphic novel style graphics look great on twice as many devices than before.

The two game modes still exist with the ‘game’ mode allowing you to massacre your way through seven chapters of increasingly challenging samurai fighting action while the Dojo is a fight to the death as a stream of attackers launch wave after wave of attacks onto you.

One of the major changes is the control mechanism. In the original Samurai the game utilized the full touch screen to enable gesture based controls, in Samurai II: Vengeance the more traditional d-pad and action buttons have been established which in my opinion provide more robust and accurate controls.

Samurai II Vengeance

Another huge change is the interactive nature of the beautiful environments. Barrels placed around the levels can now be slashed open to earn cash that can then be spent on upgrading your special combo’s. Having access to these powerful combo’s become more and more important as you progress through the game as the enemies become stronger and more resilient.

You also need to interact with the environment to open access to other areas. This doesn’t add any puzzle aspect to the game but the extra interactivity does add to the overall depth of the game. The levels are larger and grander than before although they are still linear in nature.

Samurai II: Vengeance is also Game Center enabled with 24 achievements and leader boards for all 7 levels and the Dojo. This adds extra value to the game once you’ve completed the game.

Although there are many similarities between the original Samurai and Samurai II: Vengeance there are enough tweaks and new features that make it a must have for those new to the genre and those who enjoyed the original.

Not remarkable enough for you? How about this: that million mark was reached in just 10 days!

Created by developer ZeptoLab, Cut the Rope is a delightful little physics based puzzle game and is available for both iPhone and iPad. No info was released as to which versions were sold towards that magical 1m mark but presumably both platforms are included. Priced at $.99 for iPhone and $1.99 for iPad, that soon adds up to some serious cash!

Chillingo also claims that the speed with which the milestone was reached makes Cut the Rope the fastest selling iOS game thus far. It’s easy to believe too, with the app currently sat at the top of the US and UK app store charts at least. Do we have another Angry Birds on our hands?

The publisher also told Touch Arcade that we can expect more in-game content to be made available over time, possibly mindful of longevity issues that often plague games such as this.

You’ll have to excuse me, I’m off to learn Objective C!

Let’s Fire created by Corefan is a game based on a simple premise of fireworks exploding in the sky. Travel around the world and perfect your firework display and score points as you go.

Let's fireThe idea of the game is to control the firework display by controlling the fireworks explosion. You have to make it a perfect display. When you start the game the fireworks are fired up into the sky, you have to tap them to make them explode. You can tell when it is the perfect time to explode a firework as it will show a circle around it. If you tap it when the circle is there you will score a perfect explosion.

The timing will determine your score, you will be given, perfect, good, poor or bad. Perfect obviously being the best and bad the worst score. At top of the screen is your life bar. This will be continually reducing but if you can get a score of poor and above it will give you back some of your life line. You need to stop the bar from disappearing. When you miss or score bad it will make your life bar go down a lot quicker.

If you keep making explosions that are better than poor you start scoring what is called a chain. The more you can build up in your chain the higher you will score.

The game had some good sound effects. When the fireworks shoot up into the air they do sound like the real thing, even when they explode and light up the sky. The graphics are ok, there are some nice images in the background but the fireworks on exploding are not very exciting. There was nothing that stood out and made you think ‘wow’.

The game it does record your high score but there is no global leader board or any Game Center or Open Feint integration. I think if it had one of these it would make the game more appealing and a good reason to keep coming back and playing it.

Robo Dude [rating: 3.5/5]

I had a brick breaker style game back when I had one of my first mobile phone. This was back in the day when Sony Erricson were big in the cell phone market so that gives you an idea of how long ago it was! It was a simple game where your task was to bounce a ball against a wall knocking out all the bricks using a paddle that you could move left and right.

It was a simple game for a simple time and I spent many hours trying to beat my high scores and progressing to the new wall.

The latest incarnation of the genre is Robo Dude for iPad and for some reason they’ve added a back story of love between robots. It’s a pretty loose story and to be honest I did find that it added nothing to the game. Completing a level and moving on to the next was enough of an incentive for me.

The game itself works very week on the iPad. The accelerometer enables a choice of ways to control you paddle along the bottom of the screen. By default you control it via the tilting of the iPad. However you can also control the paddle by dragging your finger across the screen. After trying both out for a few games I decided that the accelerometer controls were the most responsive.

The initial set of 20 levels, there are 80 in total, sets you the task of collecting 20 coins and this is completed by simply completing the 20 levels. Tis is no easy task though as you only have three lives and the levels get more and more complex as you progress.

Unlike the simple rectangular blocks that built the wall that I attempted to breakdown on my old cell phone Rodo Dude presents a wide range of bricks each with their own requirements for breaking through them. Some will take a single shot while others will require a hit on the side before you hit them on the top. This is a nice enhancement to the original and keeps things interesting.

Robo Dude iPad

As you complete the first few levels you will start collecting coins and balls that are released when bricks are destroyed. These collectables can then be exchanged for weapons that can help clear large areas of the wall in one go.

These power-ups don’t come cheap though so while they are effective they should be used wisely to maximize their affect.

The levels look bold and bright and there is always something going on although as with any similar game when only one block remains it can be frustrating trying to get the right angle to clear it and move onto the next level.

The game handles multiple profiles so more than one player can play the game on a single device but there is no multiple option or leader boards which is a disappointment.

Overall Robo Dude is an enjoyable brick breaker game with a lot to offer. And while there are some frustrations the overall game is enjoyable to play and with over 80 levels should keep you busy for some time.

It’s currently available in the App Store with an introductory half price offer and if you like this sort of game and don’t need multi player and leader boards then Robo Dude will keep you entertained for some time.

Sand Slides iPhone 4Sand Slides is a new puzzle game for both the iPhone/iPod Touch and iPad where your task is to direct falling streams of sand into there corresponding colored buckets.

At first look the game looks good, however when you realize that there is just a single background and no variety in the color of the sand it’s a little disappointing.

Controlling the direction of the sand as it falls is done by drawing lines down the screen for it to slide down. The trick is though is you can only use three lines at a time and the sand just keeps on falling.

Unlike most puzzle games there are no levels to complete, instead the task is to last as long as you can. Survival is based on minimizing the number of sand granules that fall into the wrong colored containers. On the easy level you have 30,000 grains of sand to lose before the game is over while on the medium and hard levels there are 20,000 and 10,000 grains respectively.

To begin with you can simply draw lines direct from the chutes to the containers below. However, as you progress and the sand starts falling quicker you will need to draw containers to capture the sand before releasing when all is clear.

Sand SlidesGetting two different colors of sand to land in the containers at the same time will earn you multipliers to boost you score but mix the sand up and you grain loss counter will start decreasing fast.

The game is also Game Center enabled with over 70 achievements which certainly offers extra value but there’s no online multi-player or leader boards.

The game is pretty much the same on both the iPhone and the iPad but I found that the iPad version is poorly ported, to the point where turning the iPad horizontally shrinks the game back down to the size of the iPhone.

To me the game feels like it’s still in beta mode with too many rough edges to earn much interest. The premise is a good one, just needs more polish to be a success.

Ngmoco (Next Generation MObile COmpany) is famed for its iPhone and iPad games, with hits such as Rolando and Star Defence, and is now looking to expand into the Android arena more aggressively. Their past success has seen them raise nearly $40m in funding to date and their string of hits shows no sign of slowing. Arrington says ngmoco have yet to respond to questions about the DeNA interest but his sources are saying a $400m deal could be in the pipeline.

DeNA itself is no stranger to takeovers, recently buying out two companies. Gameview, a mobile gaming studio and Astro Ape, a social game outfit have recently seen the Japanese company throw money at them. Could ngmoco be next? The kind of numbers thrown around are remarkable for a company only founded just over 2 years ago, once again showing mobile is where the money is these days.

Rodent Rage [rating: 3/5]

Rodent Rage is the first from TouchTilt Games for the iPad to hit Apple’s App Store. The game puts you in the role of a laboratory rat who is raging against the machine and fighting back against the many scientists who have been performing experiments on you.

Luckily your rat has been equipped with a rocket launcher to kill the scientists and this gives him a distinct advantage.

Each level is uniquely designed with each scientist placed behind and under a variety of objects to help protect them from the onslaught of your grenades. If you’ve played Angry Birds before you can think of it like that with less cute and more gore!

Direction and power are controlled via the touch screen with placement of the cross-hairs controlling both properties. A nice touch is that your last placement of the cross-hairs remains in place so you can make slight changes to your aim to get the desired result.

Rodent Rage iPad

In addition to killing the scientists on each level you must also avoid other lab rats that are placed around the level. Failure to kill all the scientists or killing all the rats will end your attempt to complete the level.

The cartoon style graphics and animations aren’t going to blow your socks off but they are affective enough and the scientists explode with enough gore that you would think that they were in a 10:10 Climate Change commercial.

There are 30 levels in total spread over 3 worlds with each world becoming available on the completion of the earlier one. While there is scoring in the game based on scientists killed and rats not killed there is no leader board, either locally or online to be able to compare your successes with, only a single high score for the complete world is maintained.

Overall the game left me feeling a little disappointed, with the lack of variety and no competitive options, the game doesn’t have much long lasting appeal. That may change however with the promise of additional levels and mini-games in a future update.

At $1.99 the game isn’t going to break the bank but you may want to wait for the update before you splash your cash.

Tilt to Live HD [rating: 4.5/5]

Back in February 2010 we reviewed Tilt to Live of the iPhone and iPod Touch and raved about it’s addictive game play rating it a 5/5 hit. Updates to that game have kept it fresh ever since however now Tilt to Live has been released for the iPad. So, does it bring with it the same addictive qualities that will keep you up late into the night as the original version of the game did?

If you’ve played the original game you will be perfectly at home when you start playing the iPad version of Tilt to Live HD. It illuminates the screen with the same bright green tones but this time the graphics have been updated and polished providing an even better visual experience than before.

From an aural point of view the same addictive beats pound through the game as you play any of the four game modes all adding to the sensual overload that you get when playing the game.

For the most part the four modes are the same between the iPhone/iPod Touch versionnd a the new HD version for the iPad with only the ‘Guantlet Evolved’ game mode being tweaked.

For those of you that haven’t played the game before the main purpose of all four game modes is to maneuver your small craft, no bigger than a dozen pixels in size, around the screen avoiding the multiple dots which appear randomly on the screen to follow you around.

You are aided in your survival task by a variety of weapons and power-ups that enable you to clear multiple dots off of the screen at any one time. Only a few weapons are available to begin with making life pretty difficult but as you progress and unlock a multitude of achievements and awards these in turn will unlock new weapons.

Tilt to Live HD iPad

It’s this gradual reward system that keeps the game fresh and more and more addictive each time you play as the longer your survive the better the weapons are that you unlock, thus allowing you to survive even longer.

Controlling your craft is done purely using the accelerometer and I initially had my doubts that the size of the iPad would inhibit the level of control you need to maneuver your craft accurately. However, after just a few goes I was nimbly navigating the aggressive dots as easily as I could on the iPhone and the larger playing area and sharper graphics makes the experience of playing Tilt to Live HD on the iPad more enjoyable than it’s smaller sibling.

The controls can be adjusted easily, even during game play, as can the sensitivity so that the game plays just as you like it. Just as before achievements and rankings can be compared to your friends via the integration of the Agon social gaming network.

There is also still no multi-player option, I can think of nothing better than playing Tilt to Live HD against another player over WiFi or Bluetooth in a battle to the death where not only do you have weapons that can enable you but weapons that distract the other player.

The lack of muti-player option however pales into insignificance compared to the overall pleasure when playing the game. After playing Tilt to Live for a long time on my iPhone I thought I had overcome my addiction, with Tilt to Live HD though the addiction is very much back on!

Time Geeks: Find All! [rating: 5/5]

It’s fairly unusual for me to be asked to review a game that I’ve not heard of before even if only in passing. However when I downloaded and installed Time Geeks onto my iPhone 4 I was completely unaware of its existence. That’s no bad thing though as I was excited to find out what it was all about.

While Time Geeks is a brand new game the pixel art style gives it a great retro feel yet not dated in any way. Launching the game you may think that you’re getting ready to play a game from the 1980’s but you would be wrong. The game itself is part hidden object and part Where’s Waldo, or Where’s Wally depending where you come from, and there is a lot to keep you entertained.

The main part of the game is History Mode where you get to play through 8 missions set in eight different time periods. Completing these missions then makes them available to play individually along with the other mini games that you unlock on the way.

The game starts with a short interactive tutorial which tells you all you need to know to complete the nine missions. Each mission is set in a different year and each year has a uniquely designed map relevant to the time period you are in.
As previously mentioned each map is beautifully created in its pixelated form and is filled with activity, people and objects and it’s your task in each level to find a range of items such as specific characters, animals and objects that are randomly placed through-out the map.

You are ranked based on how quickly you find the item you are tasked to discover and so while you can complete each level by taking your time to scour every inch of the map you will be only rewarded with one star. If you want to complete the game fully you will need to find each item in under 8 seconds!

As you progress through the levels you will be rewarded by unlocking a variety of mini games which will also earn you stars depending on your performance. This mini games can also be played individually once each one has been unlocked.

Time Geeks Find All iPhone

All in all there are over 100 challenges in the game, add to that the challenge of getting maximum stars on each of them there is plenty in the game to keep you entertained for hours and hours.

Additionally, with the items that you unlock you can create you own islands full of craziness which you can either save locally or share with your friends on Facebook. Unfortunately you can’t actually play the game with any of the maps you create yourself.

The only flaw I was able to find in the game is a known issue with one of the mini games on certain devices where the game would crash. That being said I never experienced the issue and a fix has already be submitted to Apple for their approval.

If all this wasn’t enough, the game also links in with the social gaming networks of OpenFeint and Apple’s own Game Center which adds even more value for money.

Talking of value for money Time Geeks: Find All! is just 99 cents and I recommend that this could be the best 99 cents you’ve ever spent in the App Store.

Multiball Pinball HD [rating: 3/5]

Just search for the word pinball in the App Store and you will be inundated with page after page of options and more and more of these are also available on the iPad including Multiball Pinball HD which has just been ported from the iPhone to the iPad.

Most of these apps have a specific selling point and as the title of this game suggests the unique selling point of this pinball app is that you will find yourself trying to keep multiple balls alive at once.

Multiball Pinball HDThere is only one table in Multiball Pinball HD which is a littler disappointing, but that one table does look good on the iPad screen and includes all the bumpers, rails and chutes that you come to expect on an pinball game. There are no virtual flippers on the right and left hand side of the screen instead tapping anywhere on the sides of the iPad’s screen will flip the flippers on both sides of the table respectively. These controls are responsive and makes it nearly impossible to miss any required flip!

The music keeps things moving along well, however there does appear to be one major bug that under certain conditions you can leave the game running and with no interaction with the game as one ball disappears another one will enter the table and using this approach I was able to easily reach just under 10 million pts.

While there is no multiplayer option you can challenge your friends via email and upload you best score to the global high score table. There are also 3 difficulty levels for you to work through that adds a little extra value to the game.

Overall Multiball Pinball HD is another solid addition to the range of pinball games in the App Store. It doesn’t have too many additional features but it’s enjoyable while it lasts.

Dots-n-Bombs [rating: 4.5/5]

During my youth I spent many an hour playing a variety of games using nothing more than a piece of paper and a pencil. From the traditional Noughts & Crosses, Sprouts and Squares to the more unique Cowboys & Indians and F1 Racing it was a cheap and easy way to pass some time.

I was pleasantly surprised then when I received Dots-N-Bombs to review which brings the simple game of Squares to the iPad.

I’m sure the game that I know as Squares is also known as many other names so here’s a brief overview of how Squares is played in it’s originally form. The game starts with a grid of dots and players take it in turns to join two individual dots together.  Eventually you will get to a position that joining two dots will complete a square and in completing a square you claim it as yours. The game ends when the entire grid has been completed and the player with the most squares wins.

With Dots-N-Bombs for the iPad the basic rules of the game have been retained but extra features have been added to which rather than taking away from the game instead enhance it and make it even better.

Dots-N-Bombs can be played against the iPad AI or against another player using the single iPad and there are 4 game modes to play too. Of course there is the Classic mode which is a simple representation of the paper based game which works perfectly and then there is Dots-N-Bombs mode were you have 30 seconds to make your move and get to use a selection of bombs that will either clear existing lines allowing you to rebuild again and a swap bomb that will switch your squares to that of your opponents and vice-versa.

Dots-n-Bombs

This mode also works great, the time limit keeps things moving along and the addition of the bombs add an extra degree of strategy making it more of a challenge and ultimately more satisfying when you win.

There’s also a quick mode that limits each move to 10 seconds and then a custom mode which allows you to configure all the settings yourself. With these four modes there is something for everyone.

The game looks very nice, clean and effective, however the two players are identified by red and green stars and for anyone suffering from color blindness will find it almost impossible to distinguish between them. So the ability to change the colors would be nice.

The two player option works well too where you can either pass the horizontal iPad between players or with the iPad held vertically each player can sit at either end and play it without moving the iPad.

Overall Dots-N-Bombs is a great example of a simple game converted to the iPad, it keeps the simple things simple yet adds additional features that enhance the game play rather than confusing it.

Blind World [rating: 4/5]

It’s easy to pigeon hole most games as they are just version of established game styles. It’s therefore always refreshing when a new game is released that doesn’t fit into those pre-conceived categories.

So that brings us to Blind World a game that is certainly like no other I have played up to this point. Blind World is a puzzle game where the aim of the game is to make initially invisible surfaces visible by maneuvering a colorful disk around the screen.

The game looks surprisingly good despite it’s simple graphics and soft color scheme but it’s this simplicity that makes Blind World what it is. The music is very atmospheric too and while the game is nothing like Zen Bound the atmospheric style certainly is.

Each of the 40 levels split over 2 episodes start with the disk that you control in the center of the screen resting on one or two of the surface you need to completely reveal. Your task is to then move the disk around the screen to reveal all of the surfaces in the level.

Blind World iPad

This can be done by either by using the accelerometer or dragging the screen around by dragging your finger around the screen. While it’s good to have multiple control options I found the accelerometer option to work best but I’m sure it’s simply personal choice.

The game plays very well on both the iPhone and iPad, this is a game that will work on both with a single purchase, and you’ll soon find yourself throwing your device around allowing your disk to complete the various shapes and designs of each level.

Each level has a minimum score that needs to be achieved but you can continue after achieving the minimum to achieve high scores that can be synchronised with the OpenFeint social gaming network to compare with other players and unlock the 8 achievements that are available. You can also use OpenFeint to challenge other players to beat scores on individual levels.

It’s currently available on promotion at just 99 cents and I can certainly recommend this game as it offers a unique challenge that will keep you entertained. While the current 40 levels will be completed relatively quickly the developers look like they are planning to update the game with extra content.
