The iPhone 6 is rumoured to feature bigger, curved screen expected to be released in October 2014. According to a new report published by Bloomberg, Apple is preparing to launch two new iPhones next year.

Bigger iPhone models will feature 4.7 and 5.5 inch screens. Apple changed the screen size of iPhone with the introduction of iPhone 5 with a 4 inch screen. The company touted its size as perfect fit for one hand use. Samsung has been dominating the smartphone market worldwide with devices in every price point and different screen sizes.

This year with iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c, Apple for the first time since the introduction of the original iPhone launched two new models in the same year. Competition in the smartphone market is heating up more than ever as Android continues to dominate the install base.

Two models planned for release in the second half of next year will feature larger displays with glass that curves downward at the edges, said the person, declining to be identified as the details aren’t public. Sensors that can distinguish heavy or light touches on the screen may be incorporated into subsequent models, the person said.

Apple’s decision to introduce a bigger screen iPhone could certainly be seen as a response to its rival Samsung. With the iPad Air and iPad mini Apple does offer same category products in different screen sizes. So, it is possible that the the flagship model, the iPhone 6 could see an increase in screen size and also feature curved glass.

Gorilla Glass manufactured by Corning is used in all iOS devices. Earlier this year in January during CES, Corning showcased Willow Glass, which is bendable and only 0.1mm thick. Corning had announced that mass production will commence in the second half of 2013 and commercial products would be available in early 2014.

The report about curved glass in iPhone 6 and Corning’s estimated time for commercial availability of willow glass in 2014 clearly suggests that next year we could see bigger iPhone with curved touchscreen.

Apple is reportedly also working on enhanced touch sensors for models slated for 2015 release. The new sensors will include pressure sensitivity so the inputs could result in new gestures and features.

iPhone 5S keynote event will go live at 10:00 AM PT. This years media event theme is, “This should brighten everyone’s day.” It is widely believed that Apple will announce iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C at today’s keynote event.

According to various rumors we’ve published in the past iPhone 5S will retain the same design as the iPhone 5. The highlight features in the hardware could be new fingerprint sensor, dual-led flashlight and new A7 processor. The camera sensor is rumored to have new slow motion recording feature. A patent filing we reported on yesterday also suggested that the home button fingerprint sensor could also feature NFC for contactless financial transactions.

Apple is also expected to announce the all-new low-cost iPhone 5C model which will have a polycarbonate body with the same design and tech specs as the iPhone 5. A special media event scheduled for September 11 for Chinese media could suggest deal with China Mobile to carry iPhone 5C on its network. With over 700 million subscribers, a deal with China Mobile could prove to be a huge win for Apple.

In addition to iPhone 5S and iPhone 5C, Apple will share updates on iOS 7 and OS X Mavericks release date. Are you excited about today’s event? Will you be upgrading your iPhone based on the rumors about the iPhone 5S? Let us know what you think in the comments below.

After a number of lawsuits in San Francisco regarding the iPhone’s liquid sensor in the charging and headphone port. Apple has reportedly agreed to pay out $53 million in the settlement, after the company has been accused of not honoring the device’s one year standard warranty on the grounds that the liquid sensor had been activated.

However, in these cases, the customers claimed that the liquid sensor was and can be activated by humidity in the air. A number of iPhone users use their devices in places high in humidity such as in the bathroom during showers or in the kitchen as timers. This can cause the iPhone’s liquid sensor in the charging port to turn pink or red, which indicates to Apple’s Genius staff that the device had contact with some type of liquid.

The liquid sensor consists of a white indicator tape, which according to the manufacturer, 3M, can be triggered by humidity in the air. A report from Wired noted 3M’s statement and wrote details on this issue. The iPhone has up to 4 sensors on the device, 2 that are visible externally and 2 internal. However, Apple has the right to turn away customers if any one of the sensors are pink or red. Many customers claim that this is an unfair rule and requires lots of out of pocket costs, even if it isn’t the consumer’s fault.

Apple’s new iPhone 5 was unveiled on Wednesday at the annual music event. The iPhone 5 sporting a thinner form factor, taller 4-inch inch screen and LTE connectivity is available on all of the major carriers in the United States such as AT&T, Verizon, and Sprint as well as some regional carriers such as C-Spire.

With Apple’s shipping estimates around 2 weeks on the first day of Pre-order, it appears that the company is keeping the iPhone 5 in stock for a September 21st delivery. However, carriers such as Verizon are experiencing a longer wait time for delivery, with some customers expecting their pre-orders to arrive as late as September 26th. AT&T is also reportedly showing delivery in 14-21 days after first reporting the same September 21st delivery.

It appears that Sprint is currently the only remaining carrier to still be displaying the September 21st delivery date, however, that is bound to change if other major carriers are slipping in delivery early on. During the initial weeks of Apple’s product releases, shipping times are normally longer but within 2-3 weeks, drop to a week or less. This can be expected with the iPhone 5 as well.

Have you pre-ordered an iPhone 5 and with which carrier? Are you experiencing a long wait for delivery? Sound off in the comments below.

Following months of speculation and rumors, Apple’s SVP of Worldwide Marketing, Phil Schiller took the stage on Wednesday to introduce the long awaited iPhone 5. The media event, which was scheduled a week ago pointed to such a release and now the device has finally been revealed.

The iPhone 5, as expected has a larger 4 inch screen, and runs all pre-installed apps with a larger vertical area, and runs non-optimized third party apps letterboxed. The home screen has been stretched out a bit to hold 5 rows of apps, as opposed to 4 and the display is still the Retina Display with a 1136 x 640 resolution. The iPhone 5 now has an aspect ratio close to 16:9 now, making it great for watching widescreen movies.

iPhone 5 WhiteThe iPhone 5 now also carries faster LTE networking which will be supported by Sprint, AT&T and Verizon in the United States, Rogers, Telus, Bell, Fido, Virgin in Canada and numerous other carriers overseas. The iPhone also includes WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n, and is dual-channel, up to 150Mbps, making it much faster than the iPhone 4S. All of the networking and the larger Retina Display is powered by an all new A6 chip produced by Apple.

The A6 chip is 22% smaller than its predecessor, the A5 and has a 2X faster CPU and 2x graphics compared to the A5. During the keynote, Apple invited up EA games to demo Real Racing 3, showing off new improvements in graphics performance. Other major changes include the larger, all metal and glass design leaked prior to the event, along with a relocated FaceTime camera above the earpiece. Other features include:

Battery

The larger battery in the iPhone 5 shell now allows 8 hours of 3G or LTE talk time or 10 hours on WiFi while browsing

Camera

iPhone 5 camera specs

The iPhone 5 will carry the same specs as the iPhone 4S camera but will do so in a much thinner package. It has the same 8-megapixels and a 5-element lens as the 4S but will have a Sapphire crystal lens cover for more clarity and durability. The new A6 will provide for less noise during image captures along with a “smart filter” for better color matching. Apple, as expected prior to the event will also be including Panorama imaging, capturing images at 28 megapixels in one clean sweep.

The company also updated the front facing FaceTime camera to 720P HD and backside illuminated. FaceTime is now also possible over Cellular announced during WWDC.

Audio

The iPhone now has 3 microphones, one on the front, one in front for noise cancellation, and one on the back.

Dock Connector

iPhone 5 dock connector specs

The dock connector, called Lightning, will be an all digital 8 pin design and is 80% thinner than the previous design. The Lightning charger can now be plugged in any way and does not have a designated side. There is also a converter for the new dock connector that has the ability to work with the current 30 pin connectors.

Apple’s iPhone 5, with all of its new improvements alongside iOS 6 will make this Apple’s most powerful iPhone to date. iOS 6 will be released to the public on September 19th and will ship on the new iPhone 5, and will run on the iPhone 4S, iPhone 4, 3GS, new iPad, iPad 2 and iPod touch.

The iPhone 5 will be available on contract for $199 for 16GB. $299 for 32GB, $399 for 64GB respectively. Amazon.com Inc. (AMZN) and Apple Inc. (AAPL) have been competing in the ereader and tablet market for over a year now, since the iPad was introduced. On Friday, a report from Bloomberg mentioned that Amazon is now looking to introduce its own smartphone to take on the iPhone and some of the leading Android devices in the market.

A smartphone would give Amazon a wider range of low-priced hardware devices that bolster its strategy of making money from digital books, songs and movies. It would help Chief Executive Officer Jeff Bezos — who made a foray into tablets with the Kindle Fire — carve out a slice of the market for advanced wireless handsets.

Amazon has one of the most popular ereaders out on the market, the Kindle and is also leading the industry with some of its other products, including its cloud services and tablet computer, the Kindle Fire. The report mentions that Amazon is set to acquire a portfolio of patents that would allow the company to take steps in competing directly with some of the top competitors.

The rumored smartphone would likely borrow certain aspects of the Kindle Fire, including features such as purchasing books, magazines, and newspapers from Amazon’s store as well as using Amazon’s Cloud Drive as external storage. Amazon currently operates services that control a considerable portion of the digital content available online. By introducing a smartphone alongside its tablet and pairing with its online content, Amazon could very well present the iPhone with a serious competitor in the smartphone market.

According to the latest Nielsen report, Android and iPhone make up majority of the U.S smartphone market. Both Android phones and iPhone did not exist or were not popular about 5 years ago, and were introduced into a Nokia and Blackberry dominated market. Since then Google and Apple have become fierce competitors and the data proves that they are in fact, at the top of the smartphone market. According to the report, Android’s increase in market share was a whopping 53% from January to October, up from a solid 42%. Apple’s iOS, although trailing behind Android also experienced an increase, from 21% to 29%.

With Android and Apple leading the pack, Blackberry’s RIM has been seeing a steady decline in shares, holding on to only 11.6 percent of the smartphone market, which is substantially less than both Android and Apple. Other smartphone companies, such as Motorola once held over 36% of the smartphone market but have since dropped to below 1%, as of March 2009. This is due in large part to Apple’s massive success with the iPhone’s adoption, selling more of the device each quarter and the widespread adoption of Android OS in a number of smartphones, including Motorola’s Droid line.

Nielsen’s report also mentioned new smartphone purchases, where 48 percent of users surveyed in February said they purchased an Android phone and 43% said they purchased an iPhone. These are staggering numbers, especially since both of these companies have not faltered with their takeover of the U.S smartphone market and have increased their annual revenue with each passing year.

Games showcased during the advertisement include Electronic Arts’ hugely popular classic game Scrabble, Chair Entertainment’s epic sword fighting game Infinity Blade and Star Battalion by Gameloft.

Apple previously posted similar ads highlighting App Store, iBooks and iPod and iTunes. All these end with the tagline “if you don’t have an iPhone, well, you don’t have an iPhone!” and then calls iPhone 4 the worlds thinnest smartphone.

In the recent past our favorite iPhone 4 ad has been ‘Waltz’ which features the phone on AT&T and Verizon. Do you like Apple’s latest iPhone TV ads? Let us know what you think in the comments.

This acquisition by Apple is likely to bear fruit sooner than its earlier purchase of LaLa, the music sharing service, who’s web site is also closed. And has been for some time, much to the chagrin of people who loved the service.

But the two purchases by Apple may well be related to some degree. Apple seems to be pushing in all directions to become a dominant player in our daily lifestyle, particularly where media is concerned. That includes streaming TV and music, and cool high quality headphones to listen to stuff on.

It seems very likely that Apple will be launching an own brand of quality Bluetooth headsets to fill its Apple Stores and bulging online retail presence. And that’s good news, as 9To5Mac remind us that Apple’s previous attempts at making its own Bluetooth headsets didn’t go so well!

The secrecy, and time period surrounding this deal makes me wonder if Apple has some new products planned for Christmas. Some great stocking fillers for the iOS person in your life, perhaps!

The white iPhone 4 saga has rumbled on ever since the initial launch of the handset and umpteen delays later all signs point to a cancellation, or at the very least a longer than already expected delay.

The reason for Apple’s reluctance to bring the white version of its latest smartphone is unknown, though many (including yours truly) speculate that an issue with the quality of white colouring is to blame. Recent murmurings have suggested that matching the home button to the rest of the phone is proving more challenging than the Cupertino outfit originally anticipated – and we all know how particular el-Jobso can be!

Around the time of the iPhone 4 launch, quite a few celebrities, who are well known to senior management at Apple *cough* Steve Jobs *cough* were given White iPhone 4’s.

One well known example is English comedian Stephen Fry, who was seen carrying the White iPhone 4 at various events in the UK around fourth gen iPhone launch time.

I remember mystery appearances of White iPhone 4s causing much consternation during the UK iPhone 4 launch day. Videos of people casually holding white iPhone 4s in Apple’s UK stores were beamed around the world by Sky News, and subsequently YouTube. So they are out there, like magical Unicorns!

The reason for the White iPhone 4 not hitting the store shelves has been widely reported as being because of problems with both the Home button and the front panel. Apparently, the Home Button has not been matching the rest of the case color so well. A lot of light has been leaking from the display of the White iPhone 4 due to the coloring process for the front panel not ending up as opaque as Apple specified.

Apple are working to resolve these issues in manufacturing and it seems in the meantime that they are stockpiling a number of White iPhone 4s, perhaps in limited numbers, some of which they are giving out to “friends”. Presumably these are either test models, or those that were deemed acceptable to Apple for trusted people to use.

This last part of the White iPhone 4 story is all according to a gentleman that Pocket Lint photographed carrying a White iPhone 4, and then approached to talk to at an event in New York City today. Apparently he “knows people” at Apple, and was allowed to have one. So there you are…

The man did not want to be named. But confirmed that the fit and finish on the White iPhone 4 is not up to the standard that Apple feels comfortable selling to the public‚ yet.

Assuming you believe his account, don’t expect to see any White iPhones in stores until Apple are happy.

Would you want a White iPhone 4 with buttons that don’t match the case? Or would you return one like that? Are Apple correct to hold out for perfection? Have your say in the comments…

The only good news? Meizume is reporting the local Zhuhai government is supporting Meizu.

Meizu CEO Jack Wong reported via a forum post that Apple has forced his company to give its M8 handset to boot due to claims of copying the iPhone’s design – and considering Meizu has made a business out of doing just that they may have a point! Their handsets certainly look like iPhone clones though their OS has taken a turn away from iOS in recent iterations. Whether this will save them is unclear at present. If it doesn’t, Wong is clearly prepared to take the matter to court should Apple push it. He’s a brave, brave man!

Presumably the current state of affairs isn’t surprising anyone at Meizu, and their upcoming M9 phone should be safe from the recent furore thanks to its use of Google’s open(ish) Android operating system. This is Apple though, so anything is very much possible.

The M8 isn’t the first time Meizu has used a design similar to Apple’s. Many of the company’s MP3 players copied the design of Apple’s 5th generation iPod, along with the Nano.

On a related note, props to meizume.com for possibly the best picture ever.

We are not really comparing Apples to Oranges here (Sorry for the unintentional pun). Because iOS is installed on many more devices than the iPhone. So as Android’s market share approaches the iPhone’s market share we are comparing Android as in installed OS on many smartphones to physical Apple (NASDAQ:AAPL) iPhones. That is not intended to diminish the Android market share figures. Just to clarify that iPads and iPod Touches still give iOS a healthy install advantage over Android. That may well all change of course, as more Android Tablets and other gizmos hit the market place. But that is a battle for another day!

The subject being discussed today is the market share of Apple’s iPhone vs the myriad of smart phones running Android. When those figures are examined we have Apple losing 1.3% of US market-share in the three months ending in July. Over the same period, according to ComScore, the number of smartphones running Android grew by 5%. Some say that in as little as a year and a half Android will have overtaken the iPhone in the marketplace. That may be so, but it is not really a fair head to head comparison that is valid whilst the iPhone 4 is still being clamoured for on networks where people’s only option is an Android based device!

The main problem Apple faces is simply that is has not put the iPhone on enough big carriers, as we all know. Android is actually only available on 59 carriers world-wide, as opposed to 154 for the iPhone. But of the 59 carriers that Android is on there are both cut price Android phone models being sold as lost leaders, and some of the largest wireless carriers with the most consumers; Verizon Wireless (NYSE:VZ), Vodafone (NASDAQ:VOD) Germany, NTT DoCoMo (NYSE: DCM) and China Mobile.

Apple are surely aware of this, and the recent reports that you’ve read here about the possibility of an iPhone expansion to Verizon or T-Mobile seem to be something Apple needs to consider more urgently to keep its advantage over Android.

Apple’s rumored recent deal with Qualcomm seems to be an indicator of a step in that direction. And all adds up to at least some new North American networks in the iPhone 4’s not too distant future…

It goes something like this…

A T-Mobile manager casually mentioned to me that they’re going to get the iPhone 3GS (but not 4, oddly) later this year. Common knowledge?

Seeing as the magazine has not run it themselves as an article it seems more likely that Anderson is floating a rumor he has heard, but has little confidence in.

This seems to us at the moment, to be little more than another of those Verizon / T-Mobile rumors that does the rounds from time to time.

As we’ve reported previously it still seems far more likely to us that Apple is looking to expand in Verizon’s direction with an iPhone 4 retooled for CDMA, but not until next year when the factory outputting those iPhone 4 is online.

Perhaps T-Mobile is a stop gap option if Apple feels under pressure from Androids growth and needs to get onto a network more easily and quickly. Or in the event of production delays with the Verizon iPhone. In that case the iPhone 3GS may be a supply line that is easier to retool, or split.

T-Mobile could be that option because they use the same basic system as AT&T for their wireless, albeit on a different frequency. Not an easy switch. But easier than speeding up production and testing of a CDMA iPhone 4 for Verizon.

Does T-Mobile sound credible to you? Have your say in the comments.

What effect, if any, that steel back will have on reception we do not know. Do you prefer the idea of a Steel backed iPhone? Let us know your thoughts in the comments…

The concerns regarding iPhone 4 reception have been growing at an increasing rate and an open letter by Apple to all it’s customers has not proved to be satisfactory.

It is widely believed that Apple will be talking about iPhone 4 reception issues and the antenna design. There have been various rumors and PR experts suggesting that the best strategy for Apple at this stage would be to do a recall and it will be interesting to see how Apple tackles this situation.

A recent survey from ChangeWave Research completed at the end of June, prior to the iPhone 4 launch, shows that RIM is holding onto its market lead by its fingernails.

In terms of current share, Apple (34%) is up 1-pt since our March survey to an all-time high while RIM (34%) has taken another hit – dropping 4-pts in the past 90 days.

When questioned, 52% of the people surveyed by ChangeWave confirmed that if they were going to buy a new mobile phone in the next 90 days it would be an Apple iPhone.

Largely forgotten now, Palm holds onto barely 1% of the mobile marketplace, which makes it sadly irrelevant.

It bears repeating that this survey was completed prior to the iPhone 4 going on sale, but at that point Apple led in customer satisfaction over other manufacturers. 73% of Apple customers stated that they were happy with their device. It will be interesting to revisit this particular figure in a couple of months when the current iPhone 4 issues have been clarified.

What chance does Microsoft’s new Windows Phone 7 have in this marketplace we have to wonder.

Do you think Apple and Google will crush RIM, as they appear to have done to Palm? And do you think that Microsofts latest mobile phone, after their Kin disaster, will fair any better? Let us know your thoughts in the comments…

Further lawsuits also challenged Apple’s right to control what software you could put on your iPhone, and alleged that Apple and AT&T were dishonest when they sold 2 year contracts to customers for iPhones, when they knew that they had an exclusive 5 year deal to sell the device together.

Over the past few years a few of these lawsuits have built up, and Apple has sold some 50 Million iPhones.

Today a Judge in California has disallowed some of the claims (pertaining to more spurious arguments), and said that others can be consolidated into one class action suit. Furthermore, anyone who bought an iPhone with a 2 year contract on AT&T since 2007 can also join the action.

The ultimate aim of the lawsuit is to stop Apple selling locked mobile phones in the US, and also controlling what software is installed on them.

All this seems a little bit like bolting the stable door after the horse has bolted as the iPhone will more than likely be on other carriers in the US early next year.

I am guessing that somewhere along the line lawyers and customers will be looking to line their pockets with some kind of compensation for “pain and suffering”, or other similar ludicrous claim. And at the end of the day this is another “financial fishing trip” at Apple’ and AT&T’s expense.

Do you think this will open iPhone contracts up for other carriers? Or do you think this could bring Apple’s App Store tumbling down? Let us know your thoughts in the comments…

If you misplaced your iPhone then you could potentially find it via this service, using cell tower and WiFi triangulation, as well as via your device’s in built GPS unit (if your model had one).

This service is particularly handy if you lose your iPhone down the back of the sofa, or even if it is stolen. People have reportedly caught iPhone thieves using “Find My iPhone” on MobileMe. It is also possible to remote wipe an iPhone using this service.

Apple have been busy releasing a slew of Apps for the iPhone in recent days. We reported last week on Apple’s iPhone app that allows Developers to track their app sales on the move. We also reported on Apple’s iPhone app for scheduling Genius Bar appointments, and ordering equipment.

Today Apple have realised a Universal “Find My iPhone” app which will work on any iPhone, iPod Touch or iPad. Presumably if you lose your iDevice you can use a friends, or if you are incredibly spoilt your “other” iDevice to find your lost one! It is then possible to “Remote Lock”, or “Remote Wipe” it.

It is unclear if looking for your current iPhone using the “Find My iPhone” app on that very iPhone is likely to crash the internet, or open up a wormhole! We suspect not. But it would be fun to try!

Do you think an app on an iPhone for finding your iPhone is a strange idea? Let us know in the comments?

Justin Long will not appear in this last ad. But apparently John Hodgeman, who plays “PC Guy” in the iconic sketches, finished filming a skit last week where he tries to get a guy drunk in a bar and steal his Apple iPhone prototype.

Does that story sound familiar?

This would be a very fitting opening to Steve’s Keynote. And the rumour is that that is when it will be shown.

Hodgeman has done special ads for WWDC before. Below is the short piece he did for WWDC 2007.

Will you be sad to see the “Get a Mac” ads go? Is this a fitting end to them? Let us know how you feel in the comments.

As WWDC 2010 gets closer more and more details about Apple’s next iPhone 4G / HD are being uncovered.

Today SuperPhone.cz claimed that they had obtained the next iPhone 4G / HD  screen parts and examined it under a microscope to find out the exact screen resolution. They confirmed that new iPhone 4G / HD features a 960×640 screen resolution and supports an IPS panel. This new screen resolution quadruples the total number of pixels when compared to iPhone 3GS and would make rescaling the apps which you have already purchased an easy task.

These claims certainly seem to be a good proof however, we would still need to wait for the official confirmation on June 7.
