Dacia Spring Review: Is France’s Cheapest Electric Car Still Overpriced?

March 5, 2026

J’ai essayé la nouvelle Dacia Spring : la voiture électrique la moins chère de France est-elle toujours trop chère pour ce qu’elle propose ?
The Leapmotor T03 and the latest version of the Dacia Spring, set to debut in 2026, are competing for the title of France’s most affordable electric vehicle. However, as competition intensifies and prices of rival cars approach those of the Spring, this Franco-Romanian city car must update its offerings to remain a value leader. Has it succeeded?

There was a time when you could buy a Dacia Spring for exactly 12,403 euros, after ecological bonuses were applied, back in 2021. Those days are over, as the price of the Spring has risen significantly, surpassing general inflation rates in France over recent years.

On paper, the Spring still holds the title of the least expensive new electric car on the market, tied with the Leapmotor T03, at 16,900 euros. But it’s crucial to scrutinize what exactly is being offered for that price.

Five years ago, even at the higher price mentioned, the base model’s standard equipment was quite sparse, with your smartphone and the MyDacia app serving as the infotainment system. It lacked driving aids, which weren’t mandatory at the time before the GSR II regulation, and the power was too limited for versatile use, offering only 45 hp and 125 Nm of torque.

Given that the first generation weighed 970 kg, its performance was inadequate, with a 0 to 100 km/h time of 19.1 seconds, and accelerating from 80 to 120 km/h took 26.2 seconds—an eternity.

Fortunately, since 2021, several things about the Spring have changed, starting with its appearance. The engine and battery have also been upgraded, although the range remains the same.

The range of equipment has improved, and as mentioned earlier, prices have also risen significantly. But, as is often the case with cars claiming to be “the cheapest,” it’s essential to compare them with others, even those at higher price points.

We went to check this out for ourselves in the south of France, driving on the roads of the hinterlands of Nice, with our last memory of the Spring being its initial 2021 iteration.
