To mark this milestone, CEO Tim Cook has posted a letter on apple.com outlining the company’s history and values, and acknowledging those who have helped shape Apple over the past fifty years.

Fifty years ago, in a modest garage, a big idea was born. Apple was founded on a simple belief: technology should be personal. This radical idea at the time changed everything.

April 1 marks Apple’s 50th anniversary. From the first Apple computer to the Mac, from the iPod to the iPhone, from the iPad to the Apple Watch, and the AirPods, not to mention the services we use every day like the App Store, Apple Music, Apple Pay, iCloud, and Apple TV, we have spent the last five decades reimagining the realm of possibilities and placing powerful tools in everyone’s hands. Each major innovation was driven by the same idea: the world progresses through people who think differently.

Progress always comes from an individual – in pursuit of an invention, a scientific discovery, a field of study, or a story – who envisions a better approach, a new idea, a different path. This spirit has fueled Apple from the start. But it has never been ours alone.
