Misfortunes follow one another—and they seldom resemble each other—for Alec Baldwin. After the infamous and tragic Rust film shoot four years ago, the actor has now crashed his Range Rover into a tree. Bad luck.

The setting: Monday morning in East Hamptons, with rain pouring. Accompanied by his brother Stephen—who had come to visit during the Hamptons International Film Festival—the two were chatting when a huge bright-blue garbage truck emerged on the road. Alec Baldwin swerved the wheel. His vehicle ended up off the road. Unfortunately, a tree lay directly in his trajectory.
The Range Rover, it seems, met its end in that tree.
As if the terrible weather and the crumpled bumper weren’t enough, the large white Range Rover wasn’t even his. It belonged to his wife, Hilaria, who was in California filming Dancing with the Stars, from which she had just been eliminated. Mondays are brutal.
Loaded with shopping bags, Alec Baldwin got out of the car and waited—to shelter from the downpour—until police arrived. The authorities quickly intervened at the scene and helped the two brothers get to safety from the heavy rain.
That very evening, Baldwin—wearing the same gray outfit—posted on his Instagram a rambling explanation of the accident. He blamed it on a “garbage truck the size of a whale” cutting him off.
“A big garbage truck… a garbage truck the size of a whale… it was the biggest garbage truck I’ve ever seen… To avoid hitting it, I hit a tree. I hit a big tree and smashed my wife’s car.”
He added: “I’m sorry. But everything is fine, I’m fine, and my brother is too,” while thanking responding authorities, including “Officer Gerken” of the East Hampton Police. He described the situation as “as pleasant as possible, as agreeable as possible in all this.”
Before his remarks devolved into a tangled mix of thanks and unrelated comments about his wife, he said, “Hilaria, I love you more than anything. I’m very proud of you,” leaving people bewildered as to why he was praising her at that moment.
A Long String of Troubles
It’s understatement to say that recent years have been difficult for Alec Baldwin—starting with the Rust tragedy in 2021, where the actor discharged a fatal shot that killed cinematographer Halyna Hutchins. He was charged with involuntary manslaughter in his criminal trial, but was ultimately cleared and all charges dropped in July 2024.
That said, the Rust case hasn’t been entirely forgotten. In February, Baldwin lost his temper when a Donald Trump impersonator confronted him on the street in New York about it. A month later, the late cinematographer’s family’s lawyer went after him publicly, criticizing him for appearing happy with his seven children on his reality show The Baldwins—ignoring that Baldwin had taken their child from the deceased’s parents.
And then there are Baldwin’s real estate headaches. He has attempted to sell his lavish Hamptons farm—owned since the 1990s—without success. In January 2024, he lowered the asking price from an initial $29 million by $10 million, yet still received no significant offers. The sprawling 4-hectare estate was eventually pulled off the market in July 2024 and became a filming location for The Baldwins on TLC.

According to The Times, the Baldwin couple ultimately decided to keep the property.
One might conclude that the actor—who marked 40 years of sobriety in May—hasn’t ceased stirring trouble in the Hamptons, a region he’s known since the 1980s.
