Apple’s AI-Driven Bug Detection Efforts
Apple is employing artificial intelligence to identify bugs and security vulnerabilities within its systems, similar to security researchers who participate in the Apple Security Bounty program. This program offers rewards up to $5 million for the most critical discoveries. However, Apple faces a challenge as it is overwhelmed by low-quality reports. This includes AI-generated reports that falsely identify non-existent security flaws, submitted by amateurs who lack the ability to validate their findings. To manage this, Apple informed the Financial Times that it has implemented a submission cap that resets only every thirty days. The company also mentioned that it is possible to request an additional quota, which is granted manually.
Impact of Submission Limits on Critical Bug Reporting
The implementation of this limit has temporarily delayed the reporting of some critical vulnerabilities. According to the Financial Times, the Italian startup Bynario used ChatGPT to uncover over 50 bugs in macOS within three weeks. Among these was a particularly severe vulnerability that allowed for privilege escalation. This security flaw could potentially enable an attacker to gain complete control of an Apple computer by obtaining unrestricted system access. However, Bynario reported that it was unable to alert Apple about this critical vulnerability due to the tech giant’s restrictions on the number of bug reports they could submit. Apple has since confirmed that it is now in contact with Bynario to review the details of their findings.
