Earlier today Apple released the tenth major OS X software release called OS X Mavericks. The software update is available for free as a digital download from the Mac App Store. The store link for the update is now live and users can download the update.

OS X Mavericks is a 5.29 GB data download which is certainly quite a lot considering the features included in the update. Many users who are rushing to download to latest software release from Apple are experiencing download errors.

A quick search on Twitter for “Mavericks error” reveals many customers tweeting about failed download error. I’ve already had five failed attempts at downloading the update from Mac App Store. Each time the download begins just fine however, after downloading nearly 1GB of data I got “an error occurred” message.

In order to re-download the update you need to go to the “Purchases” tab and then start the download again. Each time you start the download it will begin from the start so you’ll lose any data downloaded previously.

OS X Mavericks failed to download

This year Apple announced the update is available for free. This shift in pricing strategy is being seen as an attempt to encourage customers to update to the latest software update offered by the company. Since, this years update is free it isn’t surprising that many more customers are probably hitting the download button right now.

Apple servers could be under huge load at the moment therefore resulting in unsuccessful download for many users. At the moment is there is no fix for this issue. We tried to reload the Mac App Store by pressing Command+R and even tried to sign out and then sign-in. However, this didn’t work and the update continued to fail after about 20 minutes of downloading.

If you’re getting repeated errors then it is advisable for you to wait and download the update later tomorrow hopefully Apple servers would be able to take the load by then.

Are you experiencing Mavericks download issues or errors? Let us know about it in the comments below.

During the special event today Apple announced the worldwide availability of OS X Mavericks. The tenth major release of OS X brings technological advancements, new apps and battery enhancements to the Mac.

Apple is beginning a new pricing model for its software updates of OS X with the release of Mavericks. Today Apple announced that OS X Mavericks will be available for free as a digital download from the Mac App Store.

The tenth major version of OS X brings iBooks and Maps app to the Mac for the first time. Users will now be able to read and buy books from their Macs. Maps app provides directions, street view and integrates with Calendar app.

Safari includes shared links from your social networking accounts like Twitter, Facebook and LinkedIn. It also bring significant speed and performance improvements to the browsing experience.

OS X Mavericks brings new ways to organise your files by assigning tags to each file. Multiple tags can be assigned to a single file to make it easier for you find a file and organise your work flow. Finder now also includes tabbed browsing to avoid the clutter of multiple Finder windows taking up your screen space.

One of the most notable features in the new software update is iCloud Keychain. This allows you to upload your log in details from the KeyChain Access app to iCloud and autofill your username and passwords. This would also be available to iOS devices in a new update.

Advanced technologies included in the update make it more energy efficient and make your Mac more responsive even as you use more apps. One of the ways the company has accomplished this by introducing App Nap and Safari Power Saver. These features allot more resources to the app in the forefront while slowing the apps in the background.

OS X Mavericks is now available for download for free from the Mac App Store. Follow the download link here. The update comes at 5.29GB.

Apple’s WWDC 2013 keynote event will go live today at the Moscone West convention center in San Francisco. Tim Cook, Apple’s CEO, will kick off the event with a keynote presentation at 10 AM Pacific Time.

At this years Worldwide Developers Conference Apple will unveil iOS 7 and the next major release for OS X. A live video stream of the keynote event will be available at Apple’s website and requires Safari 4 or later on Mac OS X v10.6 or later; Safari on iOS 4.2 or later. The company has added a new section for streaming via Apple TV and requires second- or third-generation Apple TV with software 5.0.2 or later to stream the event.

iOS 7 will be the first release that has been developed under the leadership of Jony Ive, SVP of Industrial Design, as Apple fired Scott Forstall allegedly over Apple maps fiasco and an internal divide over the skeuomorphic design elements. In addition to a redesign iOS 7 is expected to open new API’s for developers giving more control over features and could also introduce AirDrop for iOS to make sharing between iOS devices easier.

No details have been available about what’s new in OS X. Apple usually previews new version of OS X earlier in the year however, it is believed that the company had to pull engineers from OS X team to work on iOS 7.

Banners for iOS 7 and OS X suggest a clean and flat design for the upcoming update. Apple is expected to release the software updates later this fall. Apple’s online store is down at the time of writing which suggests that the rumors about possible MacBook Air and MacBook Pro models could turn out to be true.

What are your expectations from this years keynote event? Let us know what you think in the comments section. To watch the live keynote event visit Apple’s website.

Over the weekend the banners for iOS 7 and the next major version of OS X went up at the Moscone Center where Apple’s WWDC 2013 keynote event will be delivered.

This is the first time we are getting a preview of any promotional material for iOS 7 and OS 10.9. The banner for iOS 7 shows the number 7 written on a plain white background. The number 7 appears to be “flat” devoid of any 3D textures or imitating real life elements. This design language seems to confirm rumors and reports about Apple’s next major mobile software release to be “flat” in design and feature a complete re-design of the OS. The font used in the banner appears to be Helvetica Neue Ultra Light, which is a very thin variant of the popular Helvetica font.

The banner for the next release of OS X, mentions “X” in Helvetica Neue Ultra Light font but features a colorful “wave” background. After viewing these banners it is easy to assume that in addition to the new features the software release will introduce a re-design of the UI elements and the user experience.

Apple’s WWDC 2013 keynote event will go live today at 10 AM (Pacific Time) as Tim Cook will take the stage to announce the future of mobile and desktop operating systems.

Apple Inc. (AAPL) recently launched a new TV ad called “Harmony” which in 30 seconds highlights iCloud service for iOS and OS X. AAPL has been posting a series of iPhone 4S ads which show the all-new voice assistant Siri and the much improved camera and now with the latest ad the focus has turned to iCloud.

iCloud automatically stores music, photos, apps, calendars, contacts, documents and keeps all your iCloud enabled devices in sync. When Apple introduced iOS 5 during WWDC 2011 Steve Jobs took to the stage to talk about iCloud and repeatedly said, “it just works”. The new TV ad in a similar theme conveys that iCloud is “Automatic. Everywhere.”

The ad begins with the all-new welcome screen in iOS 5 which gives you an option to use iCloud and then goes on to show an album being purchased on iPhone 4S which then shows up on iPad 2 and MacBook Air. Then photos, calendar, app purchases, contacts update and iBooks are all shown to sync between different devices.

With the introduction of iCloud users can not only keep their iOS devices in sync but can also backup to the cloud, set up the device without connecting to iTunes and with iTunes Match they can upload their entire music library to the cloud.

iCloud is a free service available on devices running iOS 5 or higher however, if you need to add more space for backup then you could purchase additional storage right from your device.

Earlier in the week, it was rumored that Apple was prepping to release a new Mac OS X build to the public. Apple on Thursday followed through and released Mac OS X 10.6.8 which helped patch a number of issues and minor improvements in the OS.

This is expected to be the last build released for Snow Leopard before the public release of Mac OS X Lion; Apple’s next major update for the Mac. The last update was released in late March and since then has stayed relatively the same. The release notes mention that the new build enhances Mac App Store so that your Mac is ready for OS X Lion.

The 10.6.8 update is recommended for all users running Mac OS X Snow Leopard and includes general operating system fixes that enhance the stability, compatibility, and security of your Mac, including fixes that:

– Enhance the Mac App Store to get your Mac ready to upgrade to Mac OS X Lion
– Resolve an issue that may cause Preview to unexpectedly quit
– Improve support for IPv6
– Improve VPN reliability
– Identify and remove known variants of Mac Defender

For detailed information on this update, please visit this website:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4561.
For information on the security content of this update, please visit:http://support.apple.com/kb/HT1222.

Mac App Store will be the only way to upgrade to Lion as Apple has decided to discontinue software DVD’s. This would enable people to get the update easily, however they would need to be prepared for 4GB of download.

The public release, issued for Snow Leopard, was the same build, Build 10K540, released to developers earlier this month. Apple has yet to announce a specific date for the release of Max OS X Lion, which is pegged for a release in July.

MacStories recently reported that according to their sources Mac OS X 10.7 (rumored to be called Lion) will feature iOS like scrollbars.

The first big news is iOS scroll bars and scrolling behavior are coming to OS X. That means you’ll have to say goodbye to the current Aqua scroll bars and get ready for a more minimal look. Also, the “rubber band” elastic scrolling iOS is famous for is making its first appearance on the desktop, and we’re told it “works really well and feels natural”. Basically, it works like the current inertial scrolling, but when you hit the top or bottom of a scroll view it “rubber bands” down like iOS devices do.

If we consider Apple’s minimalist approach in designing its software then it is certainly possible that we’ll be seeing much cleaner design for Mac OS X version 10.7 and better integration with iOS devices.

The line between iOS and OS X is set to get more blurred if some of us are reading between the lines the right way. The two operating systems are becoming far closer than cousins.

Apple today announced a “Back to the Mac” event to be held on October 20th at 10am Pacific Time at Apple’s Town Hall building. At that event we are promised a sneak peek at Mac OS X 10.7.

There are rumours that we may see new Apple hardware, and an update to Apple’s iLife suite for their desktop computers.

Part of the reason for this event is to show that Apple is still very committed to its desktop computers. Something people have been critical of Apple for in recent months. Saying they seem to have forgotten their roots with the success of iOS, the iPhone, iPod Touch and the iPad. Another facet of this event is no doubt to showcase new and upcoming products, but there may be another angle to this announcement.

Many people think that apart from enhancements to 10.7 to make it work even more seamlessly with our mobile devices, an updated GUI, and the usual major core OS enhancements, we may see some signs of touch style interfaces for new Mac computers which will be set to launch around the time OS X 10.7 (Lion) ships.

These methods of interfacing to the OS may ultimately be via a computers screen. But initially it may be more of a push towards large touch pads as a replacement for the mouse. But the step from touch pad to screen is a simple one.

The guys over at 9to5Mac cited the following quote from The New York Times, and it’s worth reflecting on what Steve Jobs had to say in 2007:

“Indeed, many of the new features in the Leopard operating system version are incremental improvements. But Mr. Jobs said he was struck by the success of the multitouch interface that is at the heart of the iPhone version of the OS X. This allows a user to touch the screen at more than one point to zoom in on a portion of a photo, for example.”

“People don’t understand that we’ve invented a new class of interface,” he said.

He contrasted it with stylus interfaces, like the approach Microsoft took with its tablet computer. That interface is not so different from what most computers have been using since the mid-1980s.

In contrast, Mr. Jobs said that multitouch drastically simplified the process of controlling a computer.”

The traditional desktop computer and the WIMP (Window, Icon, Menu, Pointing Device) User Interface we use is going through something of a mid-life crisis at the moment. It is time for a change!

If Apple can extend the success of its iOS multi-touch based operating system to its desktop computers, they will have indeed created a “new class of interface”. Hardware that will sell like hotcakes because there is a need to have the new hardware to use a desktop operating system that now has a finger centric interface. Something that is fresh and new, but that is familiar in many ways to some 100 Million existing iOS users.

Ultimately our computers will be more like our iPad. And OS X 10.7 may be one step closer to that.

What do you think we’ll see from Apple in OS X 10.7? Have your say in the comments…
