SimCity for Mac was finally released on August 29th only as digital download. However, the release saw some hiccups just like the windows version which was released in March. EA in the past pushed the release of the Mac version in order to fix the issues and even after 7 updates since the original launch users continued to face issues while downloading the game.

SimCity for Mac and Windows is an online-only game. You need to be connected to the Origin server at all times in order to play. This online only mode was implemented by Maxis as it ties in with the built in features like global trading, public regions and even running game scripts.

We received our review copy of SimCity for Mac yesterday and when we tried to download the game we got an error 7049:404. This error won’t allow the user to download the game to their computer. Upon investigating we found an easy fix to this issue.

SimCity Origin Error

Here’s how you can fix the file not found error. Uninstall Origin app from your Mac. You can use a free uninstaller app called AppCleaner. Once Origin in uninstalled, visit EA’s download Origin page and download the app.

Once installed sign into your account and now from the top menu bar select preferences. The preferences pane open inside the Origin app. Click “General” tab on the left and now scroll down to the last option “Origin Beta Participation” make sure you mark it checked.

Fix SimCity Origin Error

Now exit the Origin app and then re-open it. This time the app will download some more data approx. 70 MB. Now visit “My Games” tab and there you will be able to download SimCity for Mac without any issues.

Have you been able to download SimCity to your Mac? Did you face any issues? Let us know in the comments below.

]]> 0 Skate It by EA for iPhone. Great Addition to the Skateboarding Genre Tue, 18 May 2010 19:47:12 +0000 Read More]]> Skate_It_by_EA_iPhone

Skate It by EA [rating: 4/5]

Skateboarding has transferred form the real world to the virtual gaming world very well. The user base for both activities is very similar, predominately young males that will play games and skateboard too, so put the two together and you’ve got a pre-built demographic for any skateboard game of which there have been a few.

Touchgrind, Vans SK8: Pool Service and Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 2 and just a couple of the skateboarding games that have proven there success so is there room for another skateboarding game and if there is does it deserve your hard earned cash? As we know EA have produced many quality iPhone/iPod Touch apps already so seeing them bring their Skateboading franchise to the iDevice’s I was excited to see how it handled.

Not surprisingly for a game from EA Mobile the navigation and menu system is nicely polished and provides a simple method to access all of the different areas if the game. From the main menu you’ll be able to select from the 3 main areas of the game including Freeskating, Career, My Spot and My Skate and it ‘s My Skate that I would recommend you head off to before you do anything else despite your eagerness to jump straight into the Freeskating option.

You’ll want to come back to the My Skate area through-out the game but so that you can track your progress, customize your boarder and manage your profiles but the reason for heading over here first are the two tutorials that cover the basic and advanced techniques of which will help you get up and skating quicker than if you just head for the tracks. Each tutorial takes you through a specific style of trick and you have to complete them to move on to the next.

Controlling your boarder is via a variety of virtual buttons, gestures and the accelerometer. The combinations work well and while I initially missed being able to use a virtual Dpad I soon found myself not missing it at all. You can also go through a tutorial that shows where all the keys and buttons are an what they do.

The two main game options are Freeskate and Career Mode and as you would expect the Freeskate allows you to play for fun while career mode is where the fun really begins as you complete a wide range of challenges that help you to unlock new features including new kit for the ‘My Spot’ section. More on that to come later!

There are a great range of challenges in each level and depending on your area of expertise you will find some easier to complete than the others. However repeating them is easy especially if you stay in the challenge area. The graphics aren’t going to blow you away but they do look good and each of the 20 unique skate parks look completely unique with each of them offering them something different and offers plenty of variety to keep you playing Skate It again and again.

Unlocking the challenges will unlock the different locations that you can then move on to play, however as mentioned previously they also unlock different pieces that you can use to create your own unique skate parks in the ‘My Spot’ area which you can then go and skate around. This offers limitless possibilities with your own creativity being your only limitations and while being able to share your creations with other players either locally between iDevices or over the internet would make things even better it’s still a lot of fun to skate around your own creations.

The only downside to Skate It by EA is the lack of any multi-player or sharing options. For example you do have the option to record your best, and worst, tricks for viewing later but there’s no option to share or upload the the video’s to show them off. Equally disappointing is the lack of any multi-player option especially considering that in real life skateboarding is such a community based sport. What is included though are multiple profiles so if you and others want to play the game on a single device you can keep your progress separate.

Overall ‘Skate It by EA’ is another great addition to the skateboarding genre, had it included an option to use a virtual d-pad and multi-player options it may have reached the heady heights of 5/5, for now though it will fall just short.

]]> 0 Auditorium For iPhone: Beautiful, Relaxing and Pleasantly Surprising! Thu, 26 Nov 2009 19:45:19 +0000 Read More]]> Auditorium iPhone Game Review

Auditorium [rating: 5/5]

EA Mobile are known for their big name games, Rock Band, Madden NFL, The Sims 3 and Scrabble to name but a few, however with Auditorium EA are changing gear and porting a little known web based puzzle game where the game is more about the experience than the winning.

Right from the first level you will instantly see that this is a unique puzzle game. Both it’s look and feel are very minimalistic with any colors used beyond the main colors of black and white kept to a minimum which create a very relaxing feel, something that EA claim the whole game to be.

Auditorium iPhone Game_4

The first of 5 acts consist of 7 levels and these first levels introduce you to the basics of the game. At the beginning you will be presented with a ‘flow’ of particles which you need to guide through the various audio containers that are on the screen. It’s the passing through of these audio containers that creates the sounds and harmonies and ultimately complete each level allowing you to move on to the next.

Manipulating the flow is done via a variety of of different controls. You’ll start with the basics, the direction controls simply controls the direction of the flow and can be both re-positioned and resized to redirect the flow through to the audio containers and the sweet melodies that indicate the completion of the level.

The re-direction controls are the only ones you’ll need on the early levels but as you progress through the 5 acts and 30 levels of the game you’ll get introduced to other control methods including the Attract, Repel, Deflect and even the Rabbit to help you manipulate your flow of musical particles through to the audio containers.

Auditorium iPhone Game_5

As you progress a new feature is added called color controls. These don’t help direct the flow of the particles instead they change the color and this is necessary as the audio containers will also be color coded too. This again racks up the difficulty but also the reward.

There’s no scoring in Auditorium, which for some will be unforgivable, how do you rate your success, how do you rank yourself against other players? Well, simply put, you don’t! The pleasure of the game, (can a game without a competitive edge be called a game?) is in the playing and as you move through the levels not only does the difficulty raise but also the pleasure in playing the the levels and esp. completing them.

Not only do melodies cascade beautifully out of the speakers, wear headphones for the complete experience and the colors do create an audio visual delight.

EA are also utilizing in game purchasing for Auditorium. As mentioned previously you will get a total of 30 levels for your initial purchase which will set you back $2.99, much cheaper than their recent round of apps priced at $9.99 but it could soon add up to that if you purchase the additional levels that offer more challenges, concepts, colors and themes. Each additional Act from the in game store is set at 99c but whether this will be seen as adding additional value, or simply a way to raise more money remains to be seen.

This game won’t appeal EA’s usual crowd and if you are expecting an all signing all dancing application like their other big budget games then you will probably be disappointed. But look at this game with an open mind, ears and you will be pleasantly surprised.

Snood for iPhone [rating: 5/5]

Snood has been around since 1996 in various forms for many different platforms and has been an underground hit for puzzle fans everywhere while the more mainstream console version of the game, Puzzle Bobble and Bust a Move have also seen success on the major consoles. However, Snood is now available on the iPhone/iPod Touch so how does it handle the jump to the iconic handheld device?

Snood is a classic puzzle game, the game starts with a screen full of Snoods and the aim is to clear the screen by shooting more Snoods one at a time from the bottom of the screen to create chains of three or more of the same Snood. This sounds easy, and it can be if you choose an easy level, raise the difficulty up a couple of notches though or complete a couple of levels and you’ll need a sharp eye, quick reflexes and an accurate aim.

One of the most popular casual games of all time is now available for your iPhone™ and iPod touch®!

There are many different ways to play Snood and there are both single and multi player options. Looking at the single player options there is the Single Player mode which in real terms is just a series of cut scenes being interrupted by a few minutes of Snoodling. It’s fun for what it is but the storyline where you have to help the real Snoods defeat their nemesis the Numbskull Legion just seems to get in the way. Other single player modes include Classic, Time Attack and my favorite Puzzle Mode. In puzzle mode the Snoods are cleverly positioned over the playing area in such a way that any Snood that you shoot incorrectly could mess-up the whole level. Puzzle Mode really challenges your brain and your reflexes.

While this, along with the ability to unlock achievements, the cutesy upgraded graphics, (along with the original Snood graphics for the old school players, the ability to play your own tunes and the fast and furious game-play would be more than enough for most EA have really taken this game up a notch by adding Facebook integration too.

And this is not just a simple post your high-scores to Facebook integration but also allows you to challenge your Facebook friends to beat your score or actually play a live game of Snood directly against you. There’s also no need to worry whether or not your Facebook friends are online or not as with iPhone OS 3.0 notifications enabled Snood will notify fellow players that you have challenged them a game so that they can fire it up and face your challenge.

While the two player game is the same as the single player game it adds a whole new level of fun and intensity to the game as a picture in picture screenshot of your opponents screen is displayed in the bottom right hand corner of the screen allowing you to see the havoc you are causing on their screen as your clear your screen of Snoods.

When first playing this game I didn’t think I would enjoy it, partly because I thought my colorblindness would limit my ability to succeed in the game but also I thought the game was a one trick pony. How wrong I was, for while the game may be simple there is so much content bundled into the app you’ll find yourself repeatedly coming back for more.

It’s so good everyone should have a Snood in their pocket.

]]> 0 THE GAME OF LIFE Classic Edition Review: Classic Conversion of A Classic Board Game Sun, 16 Aug 2009 05:32:36 +0000 Read More]]>

THE GAME OF LIFE Classic Edition [rating: 4.5/5]

There are some games that define a childhood and for me it was Game of Life. I’m sure it wasn’t the first board game our family owned but it was the first one that I can remember sitting round the table as a family and playing for a good couple of hours and so it was with great anticipation that I downloaded the iPhone version of this classic board game to put it through its paces.

Stay single or say I do. Retire rich or lose it all. Anything can happen in THE GAME OF LIFE!

THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ENDLESS IN THE GAME OF LIFE! Play it safe and go to college, get married and start a family. Live on the edge and indulge yourself in lavish luxuries and high-stake investments. Watch your destiny unfold with every spin of LIFE’S wheel! Navigate through a beautiful 3D environment of winding roads and lush landscapes.

For those of you who haven’t played this game the aim is this, the board represents life and as you progress around it you have to make decisions that impact your life, and more importantly your earning power. From college and careers, investments and property to marriage, children and family all the main ingredients of life are here. If you have played the game before then you’ll be pleased to know that not only has the game not changed but it is also perfectly recreated in this form too.

The board and pieces look wonderful in their 3D graphic form and even more importantly the spinner not only looks like it does in the game but you also get to spin it as you do in the real game. The spinner also makes the same clicking sounds as it does in real life and the other incidental sounds and background music fit in well too.

Spinning the spinner controls how many spaces you move around the board and as you do you’ll land on squares that make life changing decisions for you like the birth of a child or purchasing a rare piece of art. Your playing piece is a car and as it drives around the board you will also reach decision making squares where you will need to take decisions such as whether you want to go to college or head straight into the world or work. Each decision you make will have there pro’s and con’s which can impact your money making potential and as the winner of the game is the one with the most money at the end you must choose wisely.

The game can be played alone against 1-3 computer controlled characters or up to four people can play on a single iPhone/iPod Touch using the pass and play method and while playing on your own is good, playing the multi-player version makes things much more fun and adds an extra degree of playability to the game.

This is the fifth board game conversion from EA with Scrabble, Monopoly, Yahtzee and Trivial Pursuit having already been converted before, if you liked any of those or if you especially like the Game of Life board game then this is definitely $5 well spent. The great thing about Game of Life is that it’s a game for the whole family and would be perfect for those long car journeys where the family needs to be entertained.

Game of Life, a classic conversion of a classic board game.

]]> 3 Review Star Trek: Impressive Intergalactic Shooter Game Tue, 26 May 2009 19:29:39 +0000 Read More]]> [Rating: 4/5]

Star Trek is a challenging intergalactic shooter game with great graphics and sound effects!

Play the official STAR TREK® iPhone™and iPod® touch game, the most intense shoot‘em up action-adventure available on the App Store!

Soar through galaxies as the captain of the USS Enterprise on a mission to complete your intergalactic obligation to seek and destroy your enemies! Mr. Spock and Captain Kirk make special appearances to assist you on your journey through space and time. Valiantly fight alongside and against familiar ships from the series like the Keldon, Valdore, and K’tinga. Be one of the first to “BOLDLY GO WHERE NO ONE HAS GONE BEFORE!”

Star Trek from Electronic Arts is based on the hugely popular Blockbuster movie which certainly brings the engaging on screen storyline to your touch screen!

The basic objective of this game is to shoot all the aliens as you pilot your ship through an intergalactic mission. Star Trek for iPhone/iPod touch features two modes; Quick Play (jump straight into the game) and Campaign (Conquer different sectors)

In Campaign mode each sector is divided into three objectives; Primary Objective, Secondry Objective 1 and Secondry Objective 2. As you progess through different sectors and objectives you can unlock various achievements to earn stars which are required for weapon upgrades. The overall manuvering of the ship is quite impressive as it can titlt in extreme angles to dodge the asteroids.

The space environment doesn’t change much throughout the game, but the alien ships and the weapons are highly detailed and gives a true sense of intergalactic shooter game.

There are three options for controlling the ship, you can either choose accelerometer, on screen joystick or direct control (touch anywhere). While playing Star Trek I found direct control the best and easy way to get most kills. The game features a large number of options for weapons, upgrades and in-game power ups. Choose and upgrade Torpedoes. Phaser, Tractor Beam, Shield and lots more. There is an option to turn off the auto-firing but we recommend staying with auto-firing to maintain better control over the ship and for a better High Score.

Star Trek is a must have for all who enjoyed the movie while on the other hand as a shooter game it won’t disappoint you.

Kris Allen has become the American Idol 2009 but EA with it’s new launch gives you a chance to win one of the most engaging shows since 2002.

American Idol: The Game has two play modes New Season and Quick Play. New Season progresses just like the actual reality series and with Quick Play you can start by selecting your song and jump into the game.

New Season begins with the Audition Week in the Morning Convention Center, here you are briefed about who you are and what you are supposed to do. Create your player profile by filling out the American Idol Competition Application Form and then you are ready to face the challenge.

The game features full motion video characters who interact with you throughout the game, I am highly impressed with their acting, perfect voice modulation and gestures which gives the game an unparalleled realism and gaming experience. The gameplay is touch and accelerometer based, after you select your song you try to sing the song in perfect tune to impresses the judges (Simon Cowell, Paula Abdul, and Randy Jackson) by either taping or tilting your device to hit the right notes. After your performance you are shown your stats (streaks, accuracy and more) and then get comments on your performance from the judges, which is also an actual footage of various comments based on your performance. Need For Speed™ Undercover is a stunner!

DO YOU HAVE WHAT IT TAKES? Get behind the wheel of the world’s #1 racing franchise to find out! Explode into a racing frenzy on your iPhone™ and iPod® touch in this action-packed adventure of hot pursuit and betrayal.

Activate Nitrous Boost and Speedbreaker with the swipe of your finger for intense driving action.

Drive 20 of the world’s fastest and hottest cars like the Porsche Carrera GT, Nissan 370Z (Z34), Lamborghini Gallardo and the Pagani Zonda F—each boasting its own unique style and performance features: handling, steering, cornering and acceleration.

Incredible 3D graphics enhance this exhilarating driving experience. Sweeping camera angles intensify your ride and yield a realistic look and feel—simply put, the best visuals iPhone and iPod have to offer.

Customize your vehicle with aftermarket spoilers, multiple wheel options, body kits and a variety of paint schemes.

Electronic Arts has released two Big titles (Tiger Woods PGA Tour & Need For Speed™ Undercover) within one week and has two releases expected in the coming month.

Need For Speed™ Undercover (NFSU) has definitely been one of the most awaited and talked about release for the iPhone. It finally made it to the App Store on May 05, 2009 with incredible response making it No. 27 Top Paid App in just 3 days!

NFSU gives a complete pulse raising and satisfying experience expected from a racing game.

You ride as an undercover cop in the Tri-City Bay Area and your objective is to take down the underground smuggling ring connected with some street racers. The story unfolds with full motion cinematic scenes throughout the game as you race across three zones completing races, vehicle deliveries, cop takeouts and more. As you advance in the game by winning different events you can earn cash and style points to upgrade, customize or buy new cars.

You steer your ride by tilting your iPhone/iPod touch, while the acceleration is automatic. Touch anywhere on the screen to pull the breaks or slide your finger down to activate the speed breaker mode to slow things down a bit. Slide your finger up to use the powerful Nitrous boost. Twitching your device enables you to drift on sharp turns.

The overall controls are very intuitive and responsive but sometimes even a simple turn can make your vehicle drift. In the garage you can swipe and zoom to take a 360 degree look at your ride which is very impressive.

Need For Speed™ Undercover is a true representation of iPhone’s gaming prowess. The 3D world is gorgeous with stunning Nitrous boost and drift effects. It unambiguously supports the best graphics I have seen on iPhone. Unlike Days of Thunder you can see your wheels rolling during the race which adds up to the realism. Graphics are highly detailed and you can also interact with the environment by damaging roadside signs and other obstacles.

Your opponents in NFSU will often use their Nitrous Boost to take over, crash into the traffic and catch up if you make a slight mistake. The cops can only take you down if they manage to hold you in close proximity.

Sound Effects

I am very impressed with the attention given to sound effects, you can hear the engine noises, wheel screech while drifting and speed boost when activating Nitrous boost. The game has some amazing sound tracks for Rock music lovers.
