Generative AI: The New Norm in Creative Workflows
Generative artificial intelligence has become a staple in the routines of many designers. According to the survey, 72% of designers use AI tools in their daily tasks, with 98% of them increasing their usage over the past year. Initial concerns about the quality of AI-assisted outputs have not materialized in practice. Figma’s findings indicate that 91% of users believe these tools enhance the quality of their designs, 89% feel they work faster, and 80% find that AI facilitates easier collaboration.
The skill set demanded by the industry is evolving alongside this technological adoption. AI usage in design processes is now the second most sought-after skill at 54%, closely following visual design at 58%. Designing AI-integrated products ranks third at 37%, surpassing traditional skills like motion design, which stands at 29%.
Interestingly, despite 25% of designers expressing concerns about AI’s impact on jobs, those who embrace these technologies report much higher job satisfaction. Designers who have increased their use of AI are 25% more likely to report an increase in job satisfaction compared to their more skeptical colleagues. Conversely, 40% of those who have not expanded their use of AI feel their situation has worsened, compared to only 18% of active adopters.
Craftsmanship: A Key to Satisfaction and Performance
Beyond tools, the concept of craftsmanship, which involves care and attention to the creative process, remains central to the designer experience. Definitions of craftsmanship vary, with 58% associating it with visual polish and attention to detail, 47% with problem-solving and systems thinking, and 36% with the clarity of user experience.
The study reveals a strong correlation between corporate investment in craftsmanship and employee well-being. Forty-five percent of designers report that their organization has increased its focus on creative excellence over the past year. Among these, 67% report higher job satisfaction, which is double the rate of those in companies less focused on craftsmanship. Leadership involvement is crucial, as 60% of designers whose leaders take an active interest in their work report increased satisfaction.
This focus on craftsmanship also impacts perceptions of business performance. Designers in companies that value creative excellence are more likely to believe that their company is growing faster than industry averages. AI and craftsmanship appear to complement each other, with automation of routine tasks freeing up time for more valuable creative work.
A Profession in Transition: Regional Differences Emerge
Designers are divided on the state of their profession. Thirty-six percent believe it has improved over the year, 35% feel it has deteriorated, and 29% see no change. This division reflects varying regional realities. The Middle East, buoyed by the growth of its digital economy, shows the highest optimism, with a 63% satisfaction rate, compared to only 38% in North America and Europe. These latter regions are experiencing significant job market declines due, in part, to high-profile layoffs in the tech sector, with 63% and 59% of respondents respectively feeling that the employment market has worsened.
Across all regions, creative freedom stands out as a key factor in job satisfaction. Cited in the top three professional attributes by 48% of designers, it ranks above work-life balance (47%) and the impact of one’s work (37%). Eighty-seven percent of respondents say that decision-making autonomy enhances their performance, and a clear set of goals is deemed essential by 91%, who agree that well-defined expectations are crucial for delivering their best work.
