France’s ART Rejects Navigo Pass Disintermediation in Cartes: What’s Next for Commuters?

L'ART ne veut pas de la désintermédiation du passe Navigo dans Cartes
The French Transport Regulatory Authority (ART) is concerned about the current integration of the Navigo pass into the iPhone’s Maps application. On February 18, the independent public authority issued a decision regarding the digitalization of transport tickets by Île-de-France Mobilités in Apple’s Maps application (referred to by its former name “Wallet” in ART’s decision).

The authority has requested the involved parties to « take necessary measures to prevent a mobile application from being “disintermediated,” meaning it should maintain its user relationship even after the ticket is stored in the Wallet. » What does this mean? It could involve highlighting a link to the application when displaying the ticket, although the specifics are somewhat unclear. If you are also concerned about losing your connection with Île-de-France Mobilités by integrating your Navigo pass into the Maps app, it’s reassuring to know that ART is backing your concerns.

Furthermore, ART has called for « ensuring fair treatment among the various purchasing processes available on Apple devices, whether the ticket is bought through a mobile app or directly in the Wallet. » Another directive requires IDFM to allow SNCF and RATP to sell the same tickets, including Navigo passes, and to compensate them for these sales. IDFM has decided to appeal the decision, citing financial stakes amounting to tens of millions of euros. The integration of the last unavailable ticket, the annual Navigo pass, is scheduled for June.
