A morning does not start off well without my daughter starting the day with 20 minutes of Mickey Mouse Club House so when I received Minnie Bow Maker to review I knew that I had the perfect person to help me review it.

The premise of Minnie Bow Maker was ideal too, my daughter already enjoys building cookies, cupcakes, popsicle and many other items on her iPod touch so making bows should be just what mouse ordered!

The first thing to be noted is that Minnie Bow Maker is much more than just a bow making app, it’s also a storybook, fashion show and photography app and they all compliment each other beautifully.

Minnie Bow Maker

Beautiful is how the app looks too, the full Disney polish has been applied to this app with high quality graphics, all the appropriate voice acting and music that children know and love. They will feel perfectly at home in Minnie Bow Maker and that’s even before they’ve started!

The first of three options is Story Mode where you can join either Daisy, Millie and Melody or Cuckoo-Loca along with Minnie and help design a bow for the disney characters. You can read along with the sub-titles or just listened to the voice acted dialog as you have to make a bow for the different characters for a special event.

The story mode doesn’t take long to play though but it’s a nice compliment to the main bow making part of the game and it also lends itself to the Big Bow Show part of the game as its the creations that you’ve created during story mode that can be viewed during the Bow Show.

Making the bows themselves is a three step process, first you choose your material, then the color and then a pattern before finally choosing the style of bow that you wish to make. At that point you get to drag the material to the bow making machine before turning the handle to see your creation drop out.

Minnie Bow Maker iPhone

You then get a chance to select who should wear your bow, you can choose Minnie of course and place the bow atop her head which is cute, however it’s more fun to add the bow to a photo of someone by either selecting a picture from your camera roll or by taking a picture. You can then resize and position the bow to display on the picture. Both options allow you to output the results to either your camera roll or out via email for all to see!

The only downside to the app, although only noticed by me and not my children, was the sluggishness of the app which was running on my iPhone 4S.

If you’ve got a young daughter who’s into her cartoon Disney characters then she’ll certainly enjoy this, although even though it’s a universal app the $3.99 price tag puts it on the expensive side compared to other iOS apps that could entertain your children.

Take two seperate pictures and watch them merge together to create amusing and fun photos. The possibilities are endless to the faces you can create.

Me You Photo Merger iPhone ReviewWhen you first launch the app to start you simply tap ‘Lets Merge’ then you can either take a snap of the persons face or choose one from your camera roll. Once you have the picture on screen and correctly lined up then tap the tick symbol and it will save it. Then you do the process again for the next image you would like to merge, going through the same process.

When that is all done you can then see on screen the merged image. From this screen you can delete, save to your camera roll, post to facebook or email it. It is worth knowing that the pictures that you take from what is on your phone already can only taken from your camera roll so if you have any other folders in the photo library you won’t be able to use those.

You can use either facing camera and when you have taken the picture you can zoom in and resize what ever part of the picture you are fitting in to the guided area. Only when you are happy with it do you then need to hit save.

Me & You Photo Merger for iPhone ($.99) is ideal for those moments sat down with all your friends and in need of a giggle. Quickly snap the faces for the willing ones and see what funny and strange images you can create. Having the Facebook integration to share with your friends is a great feature to have for those hilarious photos you make.

[rating: 3.5/5]

Talking Augmented Easter Egg is a holiday application that uses augmented reality to deliver a little Easter charm. The app revolves around an Easter egg that is able to say what it hears in a very high pitched funny voice all while carrying on an Easter theme. The app allows you to interact with the egg and carry out actions to changes the appearance of the egg as well as snap a picture with the augmented egg as an Easter card.

I must say that I have come to be quite fond of augmented reality apps. They take your environment and insert a funny character of sorts in many cases that is capable of hearing what you say and repeating it. It is actually pretty awesome that our phones are capable of this. With that being said I have put the Talking Augmented Easter Egg through the paces and found some funny aspects I didn’t expect to find. Getting started is simple, grab an egg and put it on a flat surface. Then take out your iPhone launch the app and point it at the egg and you’re off.

Talking Augmented Easter Egg iPhone

The different ways of interacting with the Easter egg are very creative and allow this app to not be just a boring talking augmented app. By touching the egg and break it and twirl it with a flip of your finger are just a few ways that you can interact with it. You are also given a set of controls at the top of the screen that allow you to use different tools to interact with the egg. The tools consist of having a chicken sit on the egg and watching it hatch, bunnies going after the egg that you must fend off with carrots and decorate it with the decorator button. You can also put disguises on the egg such as sunglasses or my favorite the facial hair.

Talking Augmented Easter Egg iPad 2

The visual presentation of this app is pretty sweet in that it is a seasonal app. I didn’t figure that I’d like very many seasonal apps during the Easter season short of maybe an Angry Birds rendition but this application is pretty fun. My niece absolutely loved it. She is 5 and she said “We don’t even have to color eggs”. I wouldn’t go that far but it is definitely a cool application to put through the paces and see what kind of fun you can have. We also had a blast with the talking part of the app as we always do with the augmented reality apps. The high pitch voice kept my niece laughing for a solid thirty minutes, I guess she was tickled by the sound of her uncle talking like a chipmunk.

Talking Augmented Easter Egg iPad

Last but not least is Bunny Busters. This is a game that utilizes the augmented egg environment and sends bunnies out to try and crack the egg. A bit of a dark twist if you ask me but I like it. The game is simple, bunnies hop at the egg and you must tap on them to give them a carrot to go away. You get points and for these points you unlock more swag for your egg. Like a top hat. Kind a cool way to add value to the app if you ask me. Overall the app is a pretty cool holiday app that you should check out if you are looking for a seasonal app that is kid friendly.

Now though, we can add the IMDB app to the (short) list.

The new update, bringing the IMDB app up to version 2.1, adds a new ‘Watchlist’ feature which allows movie fans to keep tabs on movies they might want to go and see as well as TV shows. The magic comes in the form of trailers, which thanks to the magic of iOS 4.3 and the Apple TV 2, users can now watch on their big screen TV.

Video quality on my 40-inch LCD was more than satisfactory though unfortunately not in high definition. Audio was stereo only.

Other improvements to the app include the ability to purchase cinema tickets and and improved show time listings.

The IMDB app is free and available from the Apple App Store.

Peel provides an amazing universal remote control that allows you to use your iPhone’s touch screen to replace all your remotes. Not only does this device and app combo help replace the four remotes I had but it also helps remember what shows are on at a given time and help you find show similar to ones you like. The depth of this app paired with the usefulness of Peel Fruit make it a killer combo for making your TV viewing experience better.

One of my favorite features about the Peel application is that it allows you do away with your provider’s clunky menu and replaces it with an intuitive and sharp looking guide. The app took me about 10 minutes to set up to work with my TV, home theater, Apple TV and DirecTV box. The mere fact that it replaces all those remotes was awesome but then add in the fact that I don’t have to use the slow and clunky DirecTV guide anymore I was ecstatic. Don’t get me wrong, I love my DirecTV but the guide can be slow and tough to use. I don’t like sifting through all 400 channels only to find that in my haste I passed up the show I wanted to see. This is where the Peel app flourishes in telling me the shows that I like that are on at that time and also shows similar to those shows.

Peel TV RemoteWhen you launch the Peel app it shows the following sections: Top Picks, TV Shows, Movies, Sports and Search. Each section has groupings by genre such as: Comedy, Drama, etc. When you begin using Peel you will see that most shows are there. As you click the “Star” for the shows you like, that show and shows like it will be displayed more. As you click the “X” for the shows that you don’t like, those shows won’t appear anymore. This is a really cool method making it less painful to browse through the suggested shows. If you aren’t sure what a show is, you can click on it and a brief description of the show or movie will be displayed along with the channel, duration and a picture for most. You can also “Watch on TV” to easily browse to the channel. A feature that has recently been added was the ability to set reminders for a show. There is also a share button that allows you to share via Twitter and Facebook. This adds a little bit of a social feature that is pretty much a must have these days. Overall the app is very robust and simply makes viewing and controlling your devices a better experience.

Peel iPhone RemoteWith the release of the Peel Fruit more functionality came to an already impressive app. The Fruit is simple to set up. You connect an adapter via power and Ethernet into your router and then you put a battery in the Peel Fruit itself and place it somewhere that it has a clear line of sight to the adapter and you are done with the hardware set up. This is awesome because I did not have to put the Fruit on my always crowded coffee table but instead on a lamp stand in the far back corner of our living room. This kept it up and out of the way and has been working nicely. The Fruit has lasted a long time, well over a month on a single battery and is still going strong. After being connected to my DirecTV box the app was able to mimic all of the controls that are found on my DirecTV remote like record and menu. There is one downfall which is the fact that it doesn’t have a mute but to avoid this I simply hit pause on whatever I am watching and it instantly mutes and I don’t miss any of my show.

PeelFruit

The Peel Fruit and app combine to make my TV viewing experience awesome and allows me to put away all my stinking remotes that I have come to despise. It is incredibly easy to control which is nice because I don’t have to teach my wife how to use all the remotes. The one downside I have seen is that when my brother-in-law stops by and wants to watch TV, he can’t use the Peel Fruit if my wife and I are gone. The resolution to that is going to be my iPhone 4 when I buy the new iPhone this year but for most this won’t be an option or at least not an option they like and I can hardly blame them. Short of that the device and app are amazing. They have changed the way I watch TV and interact with all of my devices.

Talking 3D Lab Mat iPhone-3 PhotoTalking 3D Lab Mat is a creation of Mobobo who also created, Mani Golf, a physics based golf app. With physics in mind, they have stuck with this seemingly successful niche and created a 3D talking app. It is the first and only app of its kind that features thousands of combinations. Talking 3D Lab Mat is loaded with an insane amount of combinations that assure you a different experience each time you pick it up if you so choose.

Talking 3D Lab Mat for iPhone takes something as simple as speech recognition and turns it into something really fun. My first experience with this app had me a little confused as to what to do with it. I had read the name and a description so I assumed something with talking but I was in for a bit of surprise.

The controls seem to be pretty simple really. If you want to take a jab at your character just do so with your finger and he’ll react. Rub his arm pit and he’ll chuckle as if you are tickling him, jab him in the toe and he’ll raise his foot and act hurt. These actions are accompanied by facial reactions and mood reactions alike. He’ll even knock on the screen to let you when he is getting bored.

Talking 3D Lab Mat iPhone-2The next thing I stumbled upon was the Potion Blending option that allowed me to change my character. Not only was I able to change the character’s appearance but the voice as well. There are a ton of options for appearance from caveman to zombie. Even better than that, you can mix and match the different options so you can have half alien and half werewolf. The combinations are seemingly endless and very easy to change with the blending tools.

My favorite part of this app (free version) is by far the vocal interaction that you can have with the character and he with you. When you speak you will see him raise his hand to his ear and shortly after you are finished he will repeat what you said. Seems kind of silly right? Well it is but it is also hilarious. My wife and I had fun making random noises and saying random things and hearing the character and all of the changeable voices say it back. Not only does this character have thousands of possible appearances but it also has hundreds of voices that change along with his appearance. Be careful what you say around this little guy because he will remember what you said earlier and repeat it. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the last thing you said to him. This makes for some funny and also awkward moments if you happen to be singing a song like YMCA and it is later repeated when your wife is in the room. Trust me, it was awkward but hilarious.

Talking 3D Lab Mat iPhone-1The presentation of this app is awesome. The 3D character looks sharp and is very polished which is a must due to the app being focused entirely around one character in the same environment. One thing I would have liked to see was more environments but hey maybe that will come in an update. The creators did a truly amazing job on the voice recognition and repeating that takes place in this app. I was shocked in how well the character was able to listen and repeat so many sounds and words with seemingly no issues. Audio and visual presentation is what this app is all about and it does an amazingjob making a stunning impression with regards to both.

This app is not going to change your lives but it is pretty fun to pick up and show off in front of friends and family. I had fun secretly opening the app and placing it in a room and seeing what things were said and then repeated. It took my friends a second to figure out what was going on and though it’s a somewhat lame little joke it is definitely fun to mess around with. I really liked this app and will look forward to future updates.

Pipclock iPhone-2Does the PipClock sound somewhat familiar but you can’t quite put your finger on where it came from? PipClock [$.99, View in iTunes] developer Ruben Frosali tailored the app after the “Pipboy” found in the video game Fallout, a post-apocalyptic game for gaming consoles. The app is a playful yet useful device with a spin from the popular video game thrown in.

The Pipclock is a multi-tool themed after a video game but it does have some practical uses. “The Pip-Boy, indestructible device built to last a nuclear explosion, is maybe the most important thing in the game. It’s always there to show you where you have to go, what you have to do, your inventory, your radiation and health levels.” said Mr. Frosali. That being said, we all know that this is just a playful rendition of the device and is no way going to aide us in such an event. It does however provide us with two things: humor and the possibility of irony if the app did work after an apocalypse. This is Pipclock iPhone-1a fun app but does sport the following tools:

As you can see the app does have several uses and if you like the Fallout game then you have not only those uses but a playful way of displaying them. The app worked seamlessly for me and I have not experience any slow-downs or crashes whatsoever while toying with this interesting spin on a pretty awesome tool. I must admit, at first I was a bit hesitant. I am a fan of the Fallout games and I love apps that encompass several uses so I don’t have to have 6 different tools. I just wasn’t sure if Pipclock Pipboy iPhone-3the delivery would be appropriate when you really wanted to know the weather and things of that nature. I am delighted that this app pulls off the creative and practical aspects very well.

After some additional research it seems that the developer has plans to add even more functionality and bug fixes in the future. At under a buck, this is a pretty cool app to get your hands on and play with if you are tired of the same ol weather app and want a breath of fresh air.

The visual comparison to the “Pipboy” from the Fallout series of games is pretty striking. Frosali does a great job of capturing the theme and the appeal of the device in the game. The replica has great Pipclock iPhone-5visual appeal and the audio only adds to the experience. The occasional sparks flying from the sides of the screen to the flicker on the screen sets a very cool tone to the overall appearance of this app. It is sure to catch a friend’s eye and spark up some conversation, especially with a fellow Fallout fan. It definitely seems as though Frosali paid great attention to detail and added small subtle nuances that carry on the app’s theme such as on location it says “Ruins of…”

BallFallDown [rating: 3.5/5]

BallFallDown, note the lack of spaces in the title, is a new style of app for the iPad which is less game and more creative. The app is aimed at a younger audience but I could easily see that this could be attractive to any age with an interest in creativity, physics and design.

The best way to describe BallFallDown is that it’s a pinball designer with the ability to both design the playing area and play it, minus any scoring!

The design is all played on a single screen with a menu of available items accessible from the top of the screen. These items include a range of balls with a sports theme and a range of interactive items that can all be placed into the playing area by simply taping on them, you can then drag around the screen to move and use two fingers to re-size and rotate.

This is all very simple to do and once you start the balls flowing, there is no limit to the amount of balls on the screen at any one time, you can continue to adjust the interactive items to their full potential.

BallFallDown

While there are multiple balls and interactive pieces to choose from there is only one play area, that of a wooden board and it would be nice to see additional styles to choose from.

The app comes in two flavors, a Free version which is advertisement free and a Deluxe version where the main differences being the amount of balls and other items that are available. All these items can also be purchased via in app purchasing from the free version also.

While this app can be a lot of fun especially for those with a creative mind there are a couple of features missing that could make this app even better. The first would be the ability to share your design with friends or via a global list of designs that people can upload and download from.

The other item that could make this app into a killer app would be the ability to add scoring to it so that it becomes a hybrid of design and and game, adding these two features would certainly add extra value to the app.

120 BPM [rating: 3.5/5]

120 BMP, as its name suggests, is all about modern music with a beat. With a user interface that is not dissimilar to Garage Band (if it had had a fluoro make-over), it is bright, fun, and embraces sharing user generated content, as well as the all important Facebook!

120 BMP fires up quickly and launches straight into one of its sample tracks whilst showing a gyrating club girl dancing away behind the main menu. And you’re off.

The app has basically three parts. A sample recording area, a track creation area, and a world view where you can share content.

The main part of 120 BPM is the track creation area, which is based around a music creation timeline I have already said it is similar to Garage Band, and in fact to most side scrolling timeline based music creation apps. Initially it is a little confusing what each icon above the timeline is for. But with a little bit of experimentation you will find your way around. There are ways to choose sets of samples, alter the positioning of sounds, and save or load your tracks. There is also a “Help” area accessible from the Main Menu, or while in the editor, which has text written instructions on how to use the app.

Basically, you place samples (which are arranged down the left hand side of the screen) into the timeline by simply touching and dragging them where you want them. Moving along the timeline can be done by playing the track, touch dragging it, or using a slider. Unfortunately the app does not let you use the slider while a track is playing. So there is a lot of starting and stopping of the track, and moving back and forth, which is a bit fiddly. This is a shame when the developers have given you so many ways to move around. Simple touch and drag, and a track that is actively playing picking up from where you dragged it to would be preferable, and would have served to clear some space on the display for more info on the sample buttons, and other menu buttons.

The included samples are great. And by and large seem to be beat matched, however you place them. But it is disappointing to download an app and immediately be told that you are gonna need to stump up more cash for any samples over and above the one very focussed set included. However, you can record your own samples using the “My Samples” area of the app. But that area seems to be limited to 6 slots, as far as I can tell.

120 BPM

By far the best feature of this app is the World View where you have a Google Earth style globe that you can pinch zoom and rotate to see markers all around the planet where other 120 BPM users have uploaded their creations. Focussing on any purple dot turns it briefly into an hour glass, before it changes to a green note and you can hear the music that a person has made.

One downside to this user generated content is that it is clear that many people like the same standard tracks included with the app. Or don’t want to pay more for new ones. But hopefully as people experiment more with the sample recording, and downloading the additional sample packs the diversity of these creations will grow.

I have already mentioned this, and I do have a little bit of an issue personally with apps that come with three quarters of their content disabled. But that is just me. At 99 cents though, it is hard to complain. But factor into that price the notion that if you want more than “Electro” sounds, and want a full range of samples from different musical genres to choose from, you are either going to have to make samples yourself, or download them. With the latter option this app’s price is really closer to $4 if you also want to have “Dance”, “Funk” and “Pop Rock” content. After that if you want even more samples to choose from then the developer offers plenty. And all are at the 99 cents a pack.

Worth the money? Yes. Fun? Yes. A Tool for Pros? Definitely not. Will it make you famous? Probably not. But who knows! Look at Justin Bieber!

At the end of the day it’s all about the in app purchases, baby!

Next choose which type of puzzle you would like to play first. There are many great ones to choose from. There are scenes from the seaside, the jungle, dinner, clothing, things around the house and many more. A great variety for your child to play.

Once the scene is displayed on the screen you will also get relevant items on the left which need to be placed. This scene will have objects around and some will just be a shadow of an object. These are where you search for the right object and match it with one of the pictures on the left. When you have found it you place it in postion by simply tapping and dragging it. Then do the rest of the shapes. Once completed you can go on to another level.

When you place each item it will speak the name of it. Great for your child to learn about different objects. It also shows the name of the object as well so an older child will be able to read the words. After completing each scene it gives you a huge cheer and says ‘great job’!

The pictures are lovely and colourful and the animals are very cute looking. They are sure to entertain any child. It is a great game that can be picked up at any time and played. (View in iTunes)

Motion Math

Motion Math is an app designed to teach children mathematical fractions. Quite a lot of children can find the subject difficult and for some it doesn’t interest them. Motion Math attempts to get you to interact wih the app and see the fraction visually.

Motion MathFractions are hard to learn at times so this app brings a fun way to learning them. On the screen is a bouncing ball and you have to tilt your device to answer the questions.

So for example, at the bottom there is a bar with 0 to 1 and the bouncing ball is showing ½. You have to tilt your device to the half position on the bar and make it bounce there. If you are correct it will move to the next question. If it is wrong it will show you guidelines to give you a clue.

You work your way through the questions if you complete them all it will tell you how many you have got right at the end. If you don’t answer a question in a set time it also ends the game and your score is shown. Great for motivating a child to have another go to improve their score.

The fractions are shown in different ways, similar to how a child would be taught at school. Fractions come in many forms so this app covers numerator over denominator, percentage, decimals and pie charts.

It is very easy to use and control and the backgrounds also change to make the app interesting and appealing. There are different skill levels to choose from so perfect for any child of any level of Math knowledge. I would say it is for a child of school age, five and above.

Yet another great app that is teaching your child an important part of their education. (View in iTunes)

Gyro The Sheepdog

Gyro Sheepdog

Developed by Imageform help Gyro the sheepdog herd the sheep to safety. Watch out though for trucks, wolfs and UFO’s!

This fun animated game is very easy to play and children will certainly love it! Tilt your device to control the sheepdog around the sheep. To make them jump and go towards the exit, give a little bark. To do this you just tap the right side of the screen. A fun game with no hard controls to figure out.

Along the way Gyro can collect items like bones for him to eat or cane juice, to help him with his days work. Just make sure you watch out for the wolf who isn’t friendly and certainly not there to help you, it just wants a lambchop!

The animation is very adorable and all children will love the cute little sheep wandering around and the game is full of barks and baa’s. This is a great game for children which is not too easy and is more of a challenge for them. It is very addictive and one that they will not want to put down. (View in iTunes)

Galactica HD [rating: 3/5]

Galactica HD is an entertainment application that is described by the developers as an interactive visualizer. The application allows you to control a never ending stream of particles by touching the screen along with a choice of 6 laid back atmospheric tunes which both stimulates and relaxes the senses at the same time.

The application starts in demo mode and with no interaction the screen will begin to flow with a stream of brightly colored particles in a range shapes. Imagine watching a large firework display without the loud noises but instead a soothing backing track.

Of course while you can sit back and relax and just watch the app do it’s thing you can also get interactive and start controlling the imagery on the screen. The first time you play Galactica HD a short tutorial will step you through the options. Being a multi-touch device there are multiple options for you to control the on-screen action.

Swiping a single finger across the screen will emit an explosion, all be it a silent one, of particles across the screen while touching the screen in multiple places will attract all of the on screen particles to your fingers before they escape again as you release your fingers.

Galactica HD iPad

The particle colors change periodically which makes the screen fill with a variety of colors although it would be nice to have some control over this and even have the ablility to change the color each time you create a new stream of particles.

There are 6 tracks to play along in the back ground as you play but just like the color of the particle streams you also have no control over which track is playing at any one time. 3 of the tracks are installed by default along with the application and the additional 3 tracks can be downloaded for free once you’ve installed the app.

As you create you visual master pieces you can either take a snapshot of your work of art which will be automatticaly saved to your iPads picture album or you can record a movie which you can playback in the application whenever you want. The application will also output to a projector or an HD-TV with the appropriate cables and this could create a nice entertainment piece and talking point at a party or as back ground entertainment when you have a few friends over.

At $1.99 I think the app is a little over priced even for the iPad. While the app is nice to look at and is entertaining for a while the lack of cuztomization will restrict the long term entertainment value of this app.

Not all apps in the app store have to be about killing, racing or winning, in fact there are many that are just about the experience and that’s what World of Sand attempts to do.

World of Sand provides a sandbox in both the literal and actual sense of the world as you are provided with an endless stream of materials to combine, build and play with in your own unique ways, in fact the possibilities are endless.

Starting the app starts the four streams of materials from from the top of the screen and while this may look pretty there is much more to the game than watching 4 streams of materials falling down the screen.

World of Sand iPadThere are 16 materials to choose from including fire, water, oil, steam and snow to name but a few of them and you can either change each of the individual streams to start pouring the material of choice or you can select each of the materials and paint it directly on the screen where it will fall and react depending what it hits and mixes with as it does.

Choosing the different materials is as simple as pulling up the tool bar from the bottom of the screen and tapping the material you want. You can also reset the whole screen by sliding the reset button.

To begin with you’ll probably start with building the simple things like walls and containers for the materials to fall into and collect on, the materials all react according to there properties so for example if you create a container of oil and then pour water onto it the water will float to the bottom just as you would expect in real life while placing fire beneath a pool of water will result in it turning to steam. As mentioned previously the possibilities are endless.

While this can be fun the graphics of the materials are not that great in fact they are all simply pixels of different colors with no graphical differences between the liquids and the granular materials as one might expect.

World of Sand can be fun for a while and the reactions of the different materials is well handled, ultimately the fun starts to grow a little thin and you’ll soon find yourself wanting something a little more. You can play the online version here.

A Diving Sim That Doesn’t Go Deep Enough!

Com2uS Inc. have become famous for their quality games for the iPhone, iPod Touch but not so much on the iPad yet, however they’ve taken a different turn with their latest release, an ocean diving sim called Ocean Blue.

There are plenty of fish tank and koi card pond simulators on the iDevices but Com2us Inc. are looking to take things to a whole new level with stunningly beautiful graphics, 2 unique locations and educational features.

Ocean Blue iPadThe locations do indeed look great, the underwater environments look very realistic as do the 6 fish that you can add to either environment.

While viewing the ocean environments you can move your view by either using the accelerometer or by dragging your finger across the screen.

Tapping on any of the fish will bring them up in close up mode with the ocean environments blacked out so that you can concentrate on the marine creatures themselves. From here you can then tap on the camera icon to bring up more details of the fish.

This is ultimately all there is to this application although one additional feature certainly is impressive it technically adds little to the overall application.

If you have a friend who has an iPad and also Ocean Blue you can ‘join’ the two iPads together and create one large environment where the marine creatures from one screen will swim across onto the other. It certainly looks cool and is fun while it lasts but the fun doesn’t last that long.

Ocean Blue iPad_3The major problem with Ocean Blue at the moment is the amount of content that you get for your $10. While both environments look great you can only spin around and around, and up or down. You can’t swim around and explore the environments so they are pretty limited.

Also limited is the 6 marine creatures that you can add to each environment, again, they look great but after you’ve looked at them for a while and read up on the details there’s not much more to be done. It’s not even as if you have to do anything to find them as they are all available from the moment you launch the application.

For $10 I would certainly expect more for my money despite how good it looks. I’m sure that Com2uS will provide more fish and possibly more environments in future updates but at this point in time nothing has been confirmed.

If you want to sit and watch some beautiful fish swimming around beautiful ocean environments then that’s exactly what you will get with Ocean Blue, is it worth $10 though? For me the answer, at the moment, would be no.

Produce crazy, hilarious pictures with ease!

Being creative doesn’t always come naturally to me so when I get hold of an application that promises to generate graphical results from photo’s I immediately have my doubts regarding how good the results of my handy work are going to be and that was certainly the case with Face Melter XXL which promises to help you turn normal photos into hilarious and fantastic looking pieces of art.

One of the nice features of Face Melter XXL is the fact that all your controls and options are available right there on the screen that you are working in, especially when you use the application in landscape mode.

Face Melter XXL iPad App Review_4When you launch the app the default picture is loaded and takes up the vast majority of the screen, it’s a great picture to play with to begin with but if you have a picture of yourself or someone else that you know the resulting image and/or movie will be much more entertaining. Straight away you can get an immediate idea of what’s in store for you by clicking the random button which will add an immediate distortion of the picture which you can press again and again with great results.

You can only select pictures from your photo library, being able to import pictures from Flickr or online resources would have been nice, and once loaded you are ready to start. There are there main methods to change the picture. The stroke of a single finger will stretch and distort the image while using two fingers in the standard zoom motion will either enlarge or shrink the selected area. Finally twist the image with three fingers will twist the image too.

Not only are these motions easy but the resulting effects on the image are smooth, accurate and impressive too and what was a perfectly normal photo to begin with will easily transform into a deformed horror show of a picture. While close up face shots produce the best results ultimately any picture can be manipulated with impressive results. It would be nice, and perhaps this will be available in a future update, if it was also possible to changes colors or add filters to the pictures for added creativity.

Face Melter XXL iPad App Review_2What I found the most fun though was converting your hard work into an animated move, and more importantly how easy it was. As you step through the manipulation of the picture you can tap on the movie reel button to bring up the movie options and add each individual shots to your animation. Again the great thing about this is not only the ease in completing the animation but the quality of the results. The animations can be saved within the application for replaying again and again or you can easily share them via Flickr, Video Mail and YouTube.

The overall package has been wonderfully implemented and with immediate results via random button to the full craziness of the animated movies Face Melter XXL can and will produce some hilarious results.

Hockey Glow and Glow Doodle are two very simple apps that are currently in the Top 25 paid apps category.

Glow Hockey developed by Natenai Ariyatrakool is a simple air hockey game which offers a colorful game design by adding the neon glow effect to the surrounding rail of the table, puck and mallets. Glow Hockey certainly creates an interesting gaming environment which makes the game addictive.

The paid version offers three game modes which includes Championship, One Player and Two Players. The developer is currently working on a future update which will add multiplayer mode over wi-fi, new themes, Open Feint integration and improve the AI (artificial intelligence)

Scribbling apps have always been fun distraction, the interface is usually very simple in these type of apps and are great for instant entertainment. Glow Doodle developed by Y Lau adds glow effect to whatever you doodle on the screen. The app offers 4 colors of the glow effect and offers save and undo feature. The app lacks the ability to choose different brush sizes or choose a picture from your photo album. Glow Doodle undoubtedly allows your creativity to glow in the dark!

The ‘glow’ effect is certainly trending and we won’t be surprised to see many more glowing apps in the App Store!

10 years ago all I wanted for my birthday was a Tamagotchi, a handheld electronic pet, via the LCD screen your task was to take care of the little creature by caring for it. It was a simple enough task although that being said the majority of my electronic pets died at a very early age via neglect. While technology has come a long way the simplicity of looking after a virtual pet has not and iQuarium is simplicity at it’s most beautiful.

iQuarium is not a game, it’s a virtual goldfish. When you launch the app all you have is an empty tank and immediately after that a gold fish to put in it. The tank is pretty plain to begin with and your goldfish will just swim around aimlessly waiting for you to feed it which you must do daily to keep it happy and ultimately alive! Feeding is as easy as tapping on the food in the top left corner of the screen and flakes will fall down from the top of the tank and your gold fish will feed on them.

iQuarium iPhone

iQuarium iPhone

Even at this early stage the graphics are stunning and that’s even before any of the additional items are unlocked and loaded into the tank. Unlocking the additional items simply requires patience as points are earned simply for opening the app at the rate of 1 point for every time that has passed since the last time you logged in. So after just a few hours you can start adding gravel, plants, rocks even a clock to your fish tank which makes it look even better than it did before.

The interaction with your gold fish is pretty limited. A tap of the screen will get it’s attention and it will even swim over to where you tapped but do it too frequently and it will soon become shy and swim off to hide.

While the interaction is limited the the app does look beautiful and I’ve often found myself just turning on iQuarium while I work as a relaxing distraction to what ever I’m doing.

I would have liked the fish and the tank to respond more based on how you move the iPhone/iPod touch but as a simple fish tank app iQuarium fits the bill perfectly.

One of the advantages of the iPhone is how well the camera integrates with the rest of the device. A lot of camera phones make you jump through hoops to use your pictures and then you’re limited by the onboard functionality. The iPhone makes your picture collection available to any application that wants to access it. The growth of iPhone applications means there’s an almost limitless supply of applications to work with those pictures.

iCaptions from Fide Software is one such application. Since there’s been pictures (and embarrassing pictures especially) people have enjoyed attaching funny or descriptive captions to them. iCaptions presents a simple, clean interface for importing pictures from your iPhone and attaching captions to them. After opening the application you get the fun started by selecting a picture saved to the device or taking a new one with the camera. Despair not Touch users, since you can use pictures saved to the device this app will work for you as well. You’ll just need to sync some pictures or e-mail them to
yourself.
iCaptions iPhone Review

As mentioned, the iCaptions interface is simple and clean. Five buttons along the bottom of the screen denote the five main functions of the app; Take a Picture, Select a Picture, E-mail Picture, Save Picture, and Reset. After selecting or taking a picture, tap the picture where you’d like to place the chat bubble. Tap inside of the chat bubble to bring up the keyboard and type the caption. Make a swiping motion through the bubble to move, resize, or delete the current bubble.

Overall, I really liked iCaptions. It was simple, easy to use, and executed it’s intended function well. That said, there are a couple of things I want to point out. First, the application advertises as being compatible with social networking sites like Twitter and Facebook. You have to be really careful to note this integration is only in a roundabout fashion. You need to make your captioned picture, e-mail it or save it and then use a separate Twitter or Facebook application to upload the picture. A good future enhancement for the app would be to integrate this support directly.

Second, the tap to place a chat bubble function seems a bit sensitive. On a couple of occassions I ended up with an unintended chat bubble or two trying swipe the one I was working with to move or resize it. I guess the easiest thing to do would be to be careful where you start your swiping motion but there must be something in the iPhone API to distinguish between a tap and a swipe and reduce the misplaced bubbles.

All in all though, these are really minor things that don’t spoil the overall functionality of the app.

Good thing you have the Swine Flute app. Sizing the boys up, you select the Potbelly Waltz as the song most likely to shut their traps. Applying your fingers carefully to holes on Swiny’s back, notes issue from his jiggling body. Twang his tail and thump his head for that extra exclamation of fun.

The initial app description in the app store attempts to place you in a scenario where you are stuck waiting for your plane while suffering from having to listen to two fellow passengers annoy everyone with there blathering about which passengers are terrorists or carriers of swine flu. The solution they offer is too load up the Swine Flu app and amaze your fellow passengers with it.

However, in reality, I feel that instead of solving the problem you will instead turn everyones frustration away from the original protagonist and onto you instead!

So what is Swine Flute? Well, you may not believe this but it’s an application that lets you use a pig as a flute. No, don’t stop reading yet, let me continue. On firing up the app the pink porker stands staring at you with 3 finger holes placed along the back and that’s it. Placing your fingers on the aforementioned holes will blast an oink from the singing swine and the more you stroke the holes you’ll be blasted with a symphony of piggy noise.

So is there more to this app than that? Sadly not. OK so you can add some back-ground beats and/or music for you to play along to but rather than adding to the fun it simply sucks more of the life out of it.

This is an app that you’ll either love or hate. Perhaps I’m missing something but the sooner I can close this app on my iPod Touch the better.

We all like a laugh and there’s no better way to get one than by the watching someone squirm with embarrassment or jump in fear and while pulling down someone’s pants or placing a spider on someone the introduction of Black Box lets you do both of these items and more from a simple $0.99 app.

In simple terms Black Box is a joke machine that you can control remotely via your Twitter account. Now to be honest, leaving my iPod Touch hidden near someone while I send it a tweet from the other side of the room makes me feel a little cold with fear, but none the less for the sake of seeing how this works I did exactly that.

Before playing the prank there are some initial things that you’ll need to configure. Firstly you’ll need to enter your Twitter account details; this account will be the one that Black Box monitors for instructions. Then you’ll need to decide on which sound you want your iPhone/iPod Touch to be activated when you instruct it too.

There are 20 inbuilt sounds to start with inc. multiple fart sounds, cats, boo’s and applause, however if none of these are appropriate you can load your own sounds. Unfortunately it’s not just a of browse to a specific sound file, to load a new sound you’ll need to send the URL and name of the sound to your Twitter account, and a direct message will not do, it will need to a public tweet which may prompt some questions from your followers as to what you are doing!

The other thing you’ll need to learn before setting your trap is the secret ‘gesture’. When ‘activating’ your phone for the prank Black Box will turn the screen black and to the untrained eye it will look like it’s switched off so in case someone finds it they can’t use it. In realty though the back light stays on and if anyone knows anything about the iPhone/iPod touch they’ll know that a simple click of the Home key will give them access to the phone, though if you need to re-open Black Box you’ll need to perform the secret gesture on the phones screen.

With all that said it took me no longer than five minutes to set everything up. Next I activated Black Box and placed my iPod touch in a suitable spot.

Black Box monitors your Twitter account every 10 minutes so it could take up to that amount of time between you sending the tweet and your phone making the sound. You can make it scan your Twitter account as frequently as every 5 seconds but with that you’ll use up your 100 Twitter account scans per hour extremely quickly.

The tweet that you send to yourself will need to contain the name of the sound in Black Box, so you could just Tweet the word “boo”, “fart”, ”applause” or you could build the trigger word into a sentence, in fact I used “I wonder who deserves a round of applause” with applause being the trigger word.

After sending the Tweet I didn’t have to wait any longer than 3 minutes before my phone spontaneously let out a round of applause causing my victim to jump with surprise before searching for where the sound came from.

In essence the app does exactly what it is supposed to do. However while using Twitter as a remote control is pretty ingenious having your twitter account spread with instructions didn’t really work for me.

Pirate roulette is a full 3-D “ini mini miny mo” type fun application for iPod / iPhone. You have a cute pirate sitting on top of rum barrel with 24 holes on the sides. Test your luck by putting a sword into one of the holes to make the pirate fly off the rum barrel. Basically each hole has equal chance except for ones with some signs that make chances higher or lower in the next turn. It’s a great toy for all age groups

For those of you of a certain age the concept of pop-up pirate will be a common one, and now you can re-live the fun of randomly stabbing a pirate on your iPhone/iPod Touch. For those of you who haven’t played the original I’ll continue.

Pirate Roulette loads with a foreboding skull and crossbones, however those of you with a nervous disposition need not worry as you’ll be greeted with some jolly music and the image of a cartoon pirate, did someone say Lego pirate?, as soon as you click on the start button.

At this point you are thrown directly into the game and the game couldn’t be any easier. This is a two player game and the players take it in turns to simply rotate the barrel housed pirate and select a slot to thrust your sword into.

The graphics are clear and simple and randomly throughout the game animations will appear to add a degree of amusement. As the players continue to stab the barrel the Lego looking pirate with quiver and shake until finally with one thrust too many the plastic pirate will be ejected, jack-in-the-box style, to signify the winner.

The game really is that simple with the only options being to turn on/off the sound/music. If the developers are reading this perhaps they could think about adding extra pirates, different barrels or even the ability to add a picture of your own face to the pirate in a future update, that would certainly keep the fun going longer.

So while the game is relatively simply to play and while no skill is required it can be a fun distraction for a few moments. An alternative use of Pirate Roulette would be as a way to decide who takes the trash out or whose turn it is to do the dishes. At $0.99 it could be a cheap why to sort out all those arguments.

This program not only replaces your Apple remote but also makes it usable wherever your wireless network stretches to, making line of sight issues a thing of the past and giving you less excuses better reasons to tidy up your computerized home entertainment service and/or one less item for you to carry about.

As you may have guessed by now this application is for those people with Apple Computers as presently there is no Windows version of the service application that must be running to let you control it, but I’m sure they are busy working something for Windows users. Another problem with this service is potential hijacking as presently there is no security pairing between computer and touch device and all it takes is someone else to be running the app and be on the same wireless network (and yes you have to have a wireless network) to be able to take control but to be honest your wireless network should have some security on it but those sharing a wireless network with a large group of people could have a problem.

The app is generally usable and works well but with a couple of niggles, one being a sleepy volume slider. I’ve found myself trying on several occasions to touch it to adjust the volume only to have my input ignored but it does work at least some times. Another niggle would be input repeat, while I’m not sure if this is an issue to the whole capacitive touch technology but each touch on the app equals one movement on your computer screen, which makes browsing long lists in FrontRow a bit of a chore where as you could scroll easily with the Apple remote just by pressing and holding one of the buttons.

Feature Requests

I would like to see the layout improved along with some dynamic button labels as when you are actually in FrontRow, to move back a menu have to press the “fullscreen” button where it could change to “back” when your in the menu system itself. How about a virtual scroll wheel of moving quickly through lists in FrontRow? I would most certainly like to see further application support for apps like Boxee and VLC and probably a multitude of other applications that could do with a remote and be able to select which app to use from the touch app, rather than just the service ran on the computer.

Tickle Monster: Tickle me till you can tickle no more!

FEATURES:
– Full use of Touch and Accelerometer
– Laughing, giggling, chortling, snickering and shakering

I searched for “Tickle” in the app store before I began writing this review and I wasn’t surprised to see more than 7 apps based on tickling! iPhone developers have always been giving us some unusual and never thought of apps in the entertainment category of App Store.

Tickle Monster is a very basic app which displays a green color Monster who gets tickled no matter where you touch. The Monster jiggles, joggles, giggles, wiggles and twitches with a simple touch. Though the developer strictly warns not to shake the monster, you might end up doing that the very first time you open the app. When you shake the monster it feels like you are actually shaking a real ****!

Use Tickle Monster after a tiring day or use it to amuse your kid or gift it to your girl/boy friend, it will never let you down with it’s cute and adorable laughter.

*A research by Tickle Monster Health Organization (TMHO) states if you use this app twice daily it will improve your sense of humor and keep you healthy!

Tickle Monster is a welcome addition to the ever growing tickle fantasy.
