Amazon Echo Dot Max Review: Small Speaker with Big Ambitions!

March 19, 2026

Test de l’Amazon Echo Dot Max : la petite enceinte qui voulait devenir grande
The Echo Dot Max is Amazon’s latest standout smart speaker. It ups the ante from the 2022 Echo Dot, featuring a new sound architecture and a more powerful chip. But do these enhancements justify its higher price tag?

Amazon’s smart speakers come equipped with the Alexa assistant and can control various smart devices in your home. Lights, heaters, vacuum cleaners, shutters… all are accessible at the sound of your voice. They can also be used to play music, listen to the radio, or stream podcasts. The Echo Dot Max is the successor to Amazon’s basic catalog speaker, the Echo Dot from 2022, which is still currently on sale. In addition, the tech giant released another, much larger speaker at the end of 2025, the Echo Studio.

The Echo Dot Max introduces several new features, the main one being a new acoustic architecture for improved sound quality. The brand specifically promises up to three times deeper bass thanks to the integration of a woofer. It also features the new AZ3 chip with an integrated AI accelerator, along with more efficient microphones.

So, is the Echo Dot Max worth the upgrade from its predecessor? We tested this compact speaker over several days to see if it deserves a spot at the heart of your connected home.

Amazon Echo Dot MaxDesign

Much like its big sister, the Echo Studio, the speaker sports a new almost spherical design covered with a mesh fabric. This fabric is much thicker than that of the 2022 Echo Dot and is reminiscent of the portable speakers from JBL, or simply, the HomePod mini.

The form factor remains compact, though slightly larger than a classic Echo Dot (10.8 cm tall versus 8.9 cm). The finishes are flawless. The speaker has three buttons: two for volume control and one to mute the microphone.

In use, the speaker is unobtrusive—unless, like me, you have the “Amethyst” color which is much less subtle than white or black. The existence of this vibrant purple almost makes me wish Amazon offered more pop colors of the same style.

The only small ergonomic detail I miss is that the + and – buttons are not raised, so they are less noticeable, but still easily operable. Additionally, when pressed, the speaker can move slightly (despite the silicone base) because the buttons are not positioned on the top like on the classic Dot. This phenomenon does not occur with the heavier Studio version.

A light ring surrounds this control panel. It indicates when Alexa is listening or allows you to see the volume level when adjusting it. It’s better placed, therefore more visible, than on the previous version.

Power is supplied at the back via a proprietary port and a non-detachable power block, all matching the speaker’s color. This power block is more compact than that of the classic Echo Dot. This is a plus, especially to avoid taking up all the space on a power strip.

Amazon Echo Dot MaxUsage and Connectivity

The Echo Dot is a particularly versatile connected speaker that can act as a smart home hub. It supports ZigBee, Matter, and Thread protocols. This allows you to control a wide range of connected devices simply by voice (lights, thermostats, outlets, locks…).

Like previous models, the speaker can integrate into Amazon’s multiroom system and be paired with a second Echo Dot to create a stereo setup. This works very well for playing music throughout the house, you just have to say, “Alexa, play music everywhere.

The Dot Max also introduces a novelty, moving closer to home cinema: it allows creating a wireless 5.1 audio system by pairing it with four other Echo Dot Max units and an Echo Sub subwoofer. However, this feature also requires the use of a Fire TV Stick 4K.

Finally, the Echo Dot Max has upgraded connectivity with the integration of Wi-Fi 6E and Bluetooth 5.3. However, it lacks a line-in port.

Setup and Application

Setting up and connecting this speaker was particularly simple since I already owned an Echo Dot. I had an Amazon account, and my Wi-Fi password was automatically retrieved during setup.

Amazon Alexa

The only step I had to take was to switch the speaker to Setup mode as it did not prompt this automatically. The Alexa app, which is used for setup, guides you through the process step by step. In short, in 5 minutes, the Dot Max was fully operational.

However, the Amazon Alexa app could clearly benefit from an improvement in its usability. There are many (too many) options, making everything a bit cluttered and it’s not always easy or quick to find what you’re looking for. Some options are strangely hidden in submenus that you need to discover, and not all the names are very clear.

In brief, a somewhat obscure app: prefer to do things by voice command, it will be simpler.

Microphone and Requests

Voice capture is excellent. Amazon has improved the microphones and voice capture, and I can definitely feel the difference compared to the classic Echo Dot. The speaker is perfectly capable of hearing you, even when music is playing, without you needing to raise your voice. For instance, I was surprised when I issued a command to Alexa from my bedroom, where my old Echo Dot is located, and it was the Echo Dot Max in the adjacent room that responded.

Regarding Alexa, she usually handles all the smart home requests quite well, and the execution is, in fact, very quick. The integration of a thermometer is interesting, and the room temperature measurement is accurate. However, it sometimes happens that the speaker does not grasp what you say. This happened to me specifically with the temperature request, where Alexa responded, “The device does not support this function,” only to actually give me the temperature right after when I asked the exact same question again.

However, as an assistant, Alexa remains a few years behind, and with the omnipresence of AI in 2026, we start to feel limited. Amazon has indeed planned to integrate a new assistant, Alexa+, but it’s yet to arrive in France…

Thus, the speaker is unable to answer questions that resemble Google-type queries like, “How to do something.” However, note that competitors are not doing better. We thus have high hopes for Alexa+, which has been available in the United States since this fall and will apparently be coming to France, on the Echo Dot Max and other Echo devices, in the coming months.

Amazon Echo Dot MaxAudio

As with the Studio version, it’s clear that Amazon wanted to focus on audio performance, promising three times more bass than the Echo Dot. The biggest change is hardware: the brand added a 63 mm woofer (for bass) and a 20 mm tweeter positioned at the front. This is a significant hardware improvement over the 2022 Echo Dot, which lacked a woofer and was indeed ineffective at producing low frequencies.

So, what does this new Echo Dot actually deliver for listening to music? In terms of bass, the brand’s promises are largely met: it’s clearly much better than on the 2022 model. The speaker can indeed show a nice depth, the bass can vibrate strongly, to the point that it can be felt in the floor. For its size, it’s honestly quite impressive and it’s thanks to this woofer that the Echo Dot Max can offer some expansiveness. However, one might almost fault Amazon for trying to do too much, as the bass can sometimes lack a bit of finesse, in an effort to be emphasized.

While these bass tones are indeed a very good feature, not everything is perfect. The speaker lacks a bit of precision, and this is most noticeable with the treble. These could have benefited from more clarity and brilliance. Fortunately, the mids are better managed, more detailed. Overall, we’re looking at a warm sound signature that focuses on smoothness – perhaps a bit too much.

Moreover, in a complex track, the Echo Dot may struggle to render different elements, instruments, and voices distinctly and lacks detail. Moreover, while it is capable of a real powerful output, and thus can sound large rooms, when the volume is increased, the speaker tends to saturate. It therefore finds its ideal place in a bedroom or an office. For larger rooms, it’s better to opt for the Studio version.

It’s worth keeping in mind that this is a small speaker, not intended for discerning audiophiles. For listening to a podcast or some music in the evening, it will suffice for 90% of users.

The speaker is compatible with the usual music streaming services such as Amazon Music, Apple Music, Deezer, and Spotify. By default, it is set up with Amazon Music, but this can be easily changed in the app.
