Broadcasting live gameplay videos, posting videos of high-scores, strategy or just narrating while playing games has increasingly become very popular in the gaming community. Twitch is the leading platform when it comes to gaming videos. The service boasts 45 million gamers every month.

If you’ve ever gone through the most popular videos on YouTube you would’ve noticed that many times gaming videos rank very highly. YouTube understands that there is a very big market of users who love to watch or create gaming related videos and share with everyone.

With YouTube Gaming a dedicated service by Google, the company aims to compete with Twitch. It will be available this summer in the US and UK initially.

You will be able to view content through Games, Feed and Channels. The app will feature a live system to make chatting with your favourite YouTube creators easy and fast.

Google has highlighted that service will cater to the needs of all gamers and if they type “call” in the search field they can be rest assured to receive “Call of Duty” as a recommendation instead of “Call Me Maybe”.

Google has been hard at work to support video playback and lifestream at 60fps. Since this is essential to offer live gameplay broadcast. According to the company YouTube Gaming will provide “an improved live experience that makes it simpler to broadcast your gameplay to YouTube.”

The YouTube application was introduced in 2007 alongside the iPod touch, several months after the introduction of the iPhone.

On Tuesday, Google released a native YouTube app for the iPhone and released it onto the App Store ahead of iOS 6 release date. The app allows users to browse in the same way the iOS app did, although it now runs with ads similar to the web version of YouTube. The ads will allow for hundreds of Vevo videos that could not be seen previously to be viewed. The YouTube blog noted some of the features of the new app:

Tens of thousands more videos: Watch official music videos like Taylor’s latest hit.
New YouTube channel guide: Swipe your finger from the left edge of the screen to reveal a guide with your subscribed channels on YouTube, giving you instant access to everything from Alli Sports to YOMYOMF.
Find awesome videos faster: Get to videos like “Gangnam Style” faster with new search tools that give suggestions while you type, and let you sort through videos or channels. Flip through related videos, comments and more info, all while watching a video.
More ways to share with the people you love: Share that incredible video you found on YouTube on Google+, Facebook or text message in the app, as well as from Twitter and email.

The app is currently available as free download in the App Store and does not support the iPad natively, however, according to the NYTimes, it is in the works.

Apple recently released iOS 6 Beta 4 to developers, adding several new features in settings and to existing apps. Following the release, the developer community began to notice a major change in the update, noting that the dedicated YouTube app on iOS was no longer included.

The YouTube app has been a part of iOS since 2007 and was introduced alongside the iPod touch. The latest beta arrived as an OTA update at first, followed by release online in the Developer Center. As with all betas in the past, the latest version, with Build 10A5376e arrives just three weeks after the last Build 10A5355d.

Developers have noticed several changes in the update, including a new “Wi-Fi Plus Cellular” feature in Settings which allows the iPhone to fall back on cellular data when WiFi does not work properly. Other features include an update to the Passbook app, giving it a dedicated section in the App Store and displaying apps compatible with Passbook. A new “Bluetooth Sharing” feature also allows users to determine which devices can share data via Bluetooth.

With all of these updated features, as well as the removal of YouTube, Apple appears to be cleansing iOS of technology from other companies. Apple commented on the removal of the YouTube app to The Verge, saying the following:

Our license to include the YouTube app in iOS has ended, customers can use YouTube in the Safari browser and Google is working on a new YouTube app to be on the App Store.

YouTube also commented on the removal:

We are working with Apple to make sure we have the best possible YouTube experience for iOS users.

Google’s presence in iOS is now very limited and will be transferred to individual apps on the App Store as opposed to being integrated into the OS itself. This first began when Apple replaced Google with Baidu as the default search engine, followed by the removal of Google Maps in iOS, and now the removal of YouTube. iOS 6 is expected to be released later this Fall in the September / October timeframe alongside the next generation iPhone 5.

The ad, which focused specifically on the retina display, also highlighted a number of features and apps available on the iPad, including Mail, using iBooks, and a number of other features.

The television ad is very simple and begins with a person using the iPad 3. A narrator then goes on to say the following:

Send a note. Stay informed.

Catch a show. Make your point.

Make a memory. Make a masterpiece.

Read something. Watch something. And learn something.

Do it all more beautifully, with the Retina display, on iPad.

Apple is continuously promoting the new iPad  3 and the fact that it carries a retina display, however, is doing so in a very subtle way by not speaking about it directly. This is only the second ad that Apple has created for the new iPad, the first being an ad introduced in March called “This Good”.

Apple is not known for use of celebrities to endorse their products. Of course, there were a few promotions a number years back, with The Black Eyed Peas and popular band U2 promoting iTunes and the iPod. However, Apple has never done a celebrity advertisement that showed faces and instead focused mostly on silhouettes.

Apple recently released two advertisements with actor Samuel L. Jackson and actress Zooey Deschanel. Samuel L. Jackson, known for his roles in movies such as Pulp Fiction and Snakes on A Plane and Zooey Deschanel, known for her role in the movie, 500 Days of Summer are both depicted as users of Siri.

Jackson and Deschanel ask Siri for a number of different things, including scheduling appointments, searching recipes, and playing music. The ad focuses on the celebrities using Siri in everyday situations, something that Apple has started to do recently, particularly with the introduction of Siri. This allows Apple to take a more personal approach to drawing in customers for the iPhone 4S and make it attractive to potential users. Siri launched last October with the iPhone 4S, and is still in beta stage, according to Apple’s website.

The ads were made by TBWA\Chiat\Day, who worked closely with Steve Jobs and other Apple executives on hundreds of Apple ads over the year. The ads feature branding for AT&T, Sprint, and Verizon at the end, as there are no brands mentioned in the ad itself. It’s interesting to see Apple begin to use celebrity endorsements for their products and reach even more customers, who are represented brilliantly by Apple’s choice of Jackson and Deschanel.

We’re still seeing some of the 200 new features of iOS 5 being discovered now the first beta is in the hands of developers, and one such feature could be improved video quality from YouTube videos, according to iDB.

Discovered by iDevice hackers @Chronic and @Sonny Dickson via internal iOS 5 settings, the new setting will enable high quality video playback through the YouTube app even when connected to a 3G network.

Currently, video quality is reduced when not connected to WiFi, presumably at the request of Apple’s carrier partners around the globe. It appears that with the release of iOS 5 however, Apple will no longer pander to its partners but will rather give its users the high quality YouTube streaming they have been crying out for.

Jailbreakers have been finding ways to force iOS to stream higher quality YouTube video for years now with the aid of apps like 3G Unrestrictor. Along with allowing 3G Skype calling, YouTube was one of the biggest uses for the jailbreak tweak.

This isn’t the first example of Apple growing strong enough in the mobile market to no longer be dictated to by the carriers. Their new iMessage system – a direct competitor to RIM’s BlackBerry Messenger – goes head-to-head with expensive SMS charges currently levied by smartphone carriers. Apple of yesteryear would not have had the clout to pull off such a move, and the pushing of more data through 3G networks could be another example of the shift in power being witnessed in the mobile device industry.

With that being the case, the iPhone’s YouTube application isn’t much use to its Chinese users, and so the device may soon ship pre-installed with YouKu — the Chinese equivalent of YouTube.

Much like YouTube is to the rest of the world, the YouKu service is China’s leading video streaming website; allowing users to upload content with no duration limit. It has also partnered with over 1,500 license holders, including television stations and film and TV production companies in China, who regularly provide content to the site.

Citing information gathered from a trusted source, TechNode reports that YouKu’s founder, Victor Koo, recently met with Steve Jobs to discuss the possibility of having his service pre-installed on iOS devices sold in China.

While there’s currently no other evidence to back up TechNode’s claims, replacing the YouTube app for Chinese users — who physically can’t get any use out of it — certainly seems like the logical thing for Apple to do.

Either that, or at least allow users who don’t want or need the application to remove it. One of the things on my wish-list for iOS 5 is the ability to remove pre-installed applications that I have no use for.

For example, I opened Apple’s Stocks application when I received my first-generation iPhone – just to see what it was all about. Since then, I’ve never used it. It just sits there, hidden away in a folder, taking up space.

I also don’t see a need for the Contacts application – it’s incredibly easy to access contacts through the Phone app; so why do we need another application for it?

What do you think? Would you like the ability to remove Apple’s pre-installed applications? Let me know in the comments.
