speedbump studios the developers behind an upcoming Unreal Engine powered game for iPhone and iPad called “Dream:scape” have announced that the game will be available on App Store on June 9.

If you’re a fan of the realistic graphics and immersive environment in Infinity Blade then be prepared for another eye popping experience but this time it might just be a little scary!

Dream:scape for iPhone and iPad has been developed using Epic Game’s “Unreal technology” which enables developers to develop “lifelike scenes and fantastic worlds”.

speedbump studios have revealed that the game will be featured on Apple’s App Store on the launch day and the list of compatible devices include: iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, fourth gen iPod touch, iPad and iPad 2.

According to the developers’ game description “Dream:scape” is, “an interactive, narrative experience, an immersive exploratory environment, a haunting journey that will become your world.”

You play the role of Wilson, a coma patient who relearns his past by exploring the dreamscape of his memories. The story of the game will unfold as you interact with objects and explore the spooky world.

The game will feature nearly 30 acres of open world to explore which will include objects and creatures for interaction.

It’s interesting to note that the game took three months to develop however, memory issues faced by older devices delayed the launch:

The game itself was completed in three months, however technical issues (regarding compatibility with older devices) took another two months to work through.

Reckless Racing Rating: 4.5 out of 5 stars

EA a renowned name for producing quality titles across all devices and no more so than the range of games they’ve produced for the iPhone and iPod Touch. Most of these games however are big named games ported from other game systems, Reckless Racing however breaks that mold as it debuts onto Apple’s handheld device.

There have been top down racers before but none on a held device that matches the quality of Reckless Racing especially in the graphics department. The tracks may be small but they are beautifully formed and as you race around them it’s difficult not to notice the attention to detail that has been put into this game.

From the dust and dirt being spun up by the spinning tires, the water bubbling over rocks in the stream that you have to drive through at times and the detail in the buildings that crowd the track the game just sparkles, especially on the iPhone 4’s Retina Display. The beauty doesn’t deminish either when playing online or suffer from slow down which is good to see.

The sound, the music at least, could be pretty decisive, with a banjo laden track being repeatidly played throughout the game. This can be turned off however so if it does get on your nerves it can be easily switched of. The sound effects are effective too with the cars sounding suitably throaty as they charge around the off tracks.

The single player game is split into three modes, Dirt Rally, Hot Lap and Delivery. The first two pretty much speak for themselves, in Dirty Lap you race against either 4 or 6 AI controlled cars to win a race over a set number of laps while in Hot Lap it’s just you against the clock, and your ghost, as you race around the 5 tracks on your own.

One of the down sides to Reckless Racing is the number of tracks especially considering how small they are. Individually the size of the tracks is just perfect for the racing but overall having only five tracks, 10 if you count the reverse of them, is rather limiting and I certainly hope that more tracks become avialable in a future update.

The final game type is Delivery, a unique addition which tasks you with collecting trailers of goods and delivery them as quickly as possible. This mode is played on a new unique track and can be played over 3, 5 or 8 minutes at a time. Deliver the goods fast and you will be rewarded with more money. I liked this addition to the game and if more tracks are added to this mode too and it gets added to the multi-player option then it will make a great game even better.

So that brings me on to the multi-player option. Playing certain games against your friends and other real people online an make or break a game and so it is great to see online multi-player added to Reckless Racing from the word go. As mentioned previously the two modes available to play online are Dirt Rally and Hot Lap and the host of the game gets to choose which type of race you’ll be playing.

When playing online you are taken into a Lobby where all the hosted games are listed. Considering this game has only just launched I was pleased to see the amount of games available to join. Listed in the Lobby is the name of the race, entered by the host, and the current number of players. What’s not included is the type of race being played or whether the race is in progress or not. It would be nice to see these options available in the Lobby before entering the race.

There’s also no overall ranking or leagues to compete in so while racing online is smooth and has little or no lag in my experience the fact that there is no lasting reward to it other than race itself left it feeling a little lacking. That being said the online racing is fun and adds extra value to the overall gaming experience.

All of this however would amount to nothing if the controls weren’t up to the task. No worries there though either as there are five, yes five, sets of controls to choose from as well as the ability to choose auto accelerate and the sensitivity of your steering. Standard steering mode was my favorite, utilizing four separate buttons for left, right, accelerate and reverse seemed to offer the maximum level of control and dexterity, having id that though having tank, tilt, half wheel and whole wheel options will enable everyone the opportunity to find the right solution for them.

For some people used to paying no more than 99 cents for a game may see the $2.99 price tag two high, for me however it’s worth every cent and should further updates add more tracks and online rankings it while make this game easily my #1 game on the iPhone 4.

Gameloft has dropped the price of Iron Man 2 and now it’s available for only $0.99. The game was recently updated for iPhone 4 with High-definition graphics that fully utilize iPhone 4’s Retina display.

Play as Iron Man for speed and agility or suit up as War Machine for maximum firepower. Both suits offer easy-to-learn controls and the ability to run, hover and fly at will. You’ll also have the chance to jump into the Mark IV, Mark VI, Stealth and underwater suits. Gyro Tennis Rating: 3.5 out of 5 stars

If you are a tennis fan and you want to play a realistic game of it on your iPhone 4 then Gyro Tennis by PersonalApplets is a game to try.

Using the built in gyroscope within the iPhone 4 you can control your racket and ball just like the real thing. The game is designed to make you feel like you are actually there playing, with the applauding and cheering audience down to the actual game play.

There is a section for help on how to play the game which I suggest you read first. If you know the game play for tennis it will seem slightly clearer but if you are new to the game then going through the hep section is recommended.

To play the game, you use your finger to control the racket by moving it along the bottom of the screen. The racket lines itself up as well making it slightly better to control and less for you to do! You are in control of the direction and height it will go in. The gyroscope will of course detect where you are trying to aim.

To use the gyroscope controls you use it the same as any other game with gyroscope controls by moving from left to right and also backward and forward. You will be able to see where the ball is going to go as it shows a line for you.
There are four difficulty levels within the game and this gives you the option to move the racket faster.

There is also the option to play two player via Bluetooth. To do this you simply change it in the settings mode and then tap a game to play with another player and the device will then search for a player. There are lots of settings available to change things like grunting noises and just how much the audience cheers and if you want any background music. There is also an option to change the court type from clay, hard, grass and carpet.

The game play took a bit to get used to. After reading the instructions I still couldn’t keep an actual game going for a long period of time. There are lots of confusing settings to change and buttons to tap and that at times was a little too much and difficult to master. After many attempts though and getting used to the controls it did work very well and was lots of fun. It is worth sticking with it and figuring it out.

It is probably one of the most realistic tennis games I have played on my iPhone. It is a must for all tennis fans and anyone who wants to try a real tennis experience on their gyroscope enabled iPhone 4.

Gaming circles were buzzing yesterday after a sneak peek at id Software’s “id Tech 5″ engine running “Rage” on an iPhone 4. At 60 fps no less! What was so impressive about the demo was that it really does resemble some of the high quality Playstation 2 titles that we were seeing at the very end of that consoles mainstream life.

What is also immediately noticeable about Rage, and id’s new “dungeon crawling” engine is just how mature and contemporary its graphical output looks generally. The lighting effects, seamless textures, and frame rate of the game puts most other so called iPhone “AAA” offerings to shame.

Am I surprised at what id have achieved. Not particularly. Impressed, yes. Surprised, no.

They’ve simply brought a wealth of experience writing AAA game engines, of a specific genre, to bear on the iPhone ecosystem. With efficient asset management, and a focussed approach to the flavor of game you want to produce there is absolutely no reason why more iPhone developers can’t be pushing out games (or at least tech demos) of this quality.

One feature of id’s engine that we should keep an eye on is the “mega-texture” component. In simple terms a mega-texture is a super large texture that covers entire areas in a game environment. It actually allows artists to produce more seamless environments, and once the heavy lifting is done in logic, enables easy asset management for engineers.

What it does do also is use a lot of space, and rely on compression great deal. Compressed textures are something the iPhone GPU is good at dealing with. But there is a slight loss of quality ( which if employed skilfully is barely noticeable), when they are endeared. Predefined textures for environments also enable designers to do amazing lighting effects with low overheads for the game’s engine.

They are in effect “baked” into the environment, so are less dynamic, and consequently less taxing on GPU and CPU resources at run time. The tradeoff is that by and large these lighting effects are atmospheric, and don’t move around. Clever lighting, and texture expanse are prominent features in the iPhone Rage demo we have seen. What remains to be seen is how much actual content we end up with in the final product.

In reality all we are doing on the iPhone and Android devices today is applying desktop techniques in macro. It’s all about batching our graphics so that our GPU and CPU do as much heavy lifting as they can, efficiently as they can manage without tripping over each other. After that it is all about managing our assets to get the maximum from limited resources.

id do not plan to actually release Rage as a 60fps game, as it will drain battery power too quickly on the iPhone at that speed. But they do envisage “Rage” running on the iPad and earlier iPods as well as the iPhone 3GS. On all those platforms they plan to run the actual game at 30fps. Saving some battery life, and probably allowing them to squeeze some time for the game logic into the CPUs workload!

John Carmack of id, also said it will run just fine on an original iPhone 2G. And it probably will. No doubt with a few less bells and whistles visually. My own procedural planet engine, demoed at SIGGRAPH last year, runs on every iOS device too, including the humble iPhone 2G. It took a lot of work to get my engine to run on both OpenGL ES1 & ES2, as id have obviously had to do for their engine to run on all generations of iOS devices. So I take my hat off to them for their effort and dedication in doing that.

Its an excellent sign of a developers technical capabilities, and confidence in their product to continue to support older hardware. It also shows a great deal of respect for ones customers in my opinion.

It only remains to be seen what the actual gameplay ends up like on Rage. id’s John Carmack said they plan to launch “Rage” initially as a mini-game, and teaser to a more full length iPhone ‘Rage’ title, to coincide with the 360 and PS3 launch next year. So expect an eye-candy advertiser in the App Store in the future, with more meat to follow…

MotoGP 2010 Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

While the title Official MotoGP 2010 suggests that you are purchasing a motorcycle racing simulation style game that’s not exactly the case, however does that make it a bad thing?

There aren’t a huge quantity of motorcycle racing games for iOS devices compared to the car racing genre and even less when you take into account the number focusing on road/track racing rather than the off road variety. However, many consider MotoGP to be the pinnacle of track racing so it should be the only motorcycling game you ever need, right?

As you would expect with an officially licensed game it includes all 18 riders and more importantly the 17 circuits from the 2010 calender from all over the world. One minute you’ll be at 45 degrees racing in Spain while the next time you find yourself with your knee rubbing across the tarmac at high speed in Holland, the USA or Japan. It’s a multi-cultural sport and the tracks reflect this.

The tracks look good and the bikes and riders look good too especially at high speed.

The game can be played in two modes, Quick Play will launch you into a race in any of the tracks that you’ve unlocked in the other mode which is Championship Mode.

Championship Mode as you would expect allows you to test your skills against the best MotoGP riders in the world. You have the option to qualify initially so that you can start as far up the grip as possible before taking to the race itself.

The game uses the same method as many racing games these days with the bike auto-accelerating and with virtual buttons in the bottom left and right of the screen enabling you to brake and give your acceleration a boost respectively.

This works well allowing you to concentrate on the more precise task of steering use of the accelerometer. The physics of the bike make the steering more difficult than a car however after a few races you’ll soon find yourself leaning into and sweeping around even the tightest of corners.

The three difficulty levels rank up the difficulty and pressure pretty evenly and while you may find yourself easily winning the Championship playing at Rookie level the heat of the battle will intensify as you progress through the Professional and Legend levels putting you into more of a dog fight with your opponents which actually makes the game much more fun.

Trophies and achievements can also be won for completing the Championship as each rider and for some some less standard successes such as overtaking 3 opponents in a row or for crashing three times in a race. However, the one thing that would add the most value for money to the game would be a multi-player option which is unfortunately lacking.

All in all though the Official MotoGP 2010 iPhone game is a great representation of the sport, it doesn’t add many bells and whistles to the genre but if you are looking for a change from the standard car racing games this could certainly be the game for you.

Edinburgh, U.K. – Kevin Ng Games today updated iPhone game Kick Flick 2010, adding iPad and iPhone 4 Retina Display support, free to existing users. Kick Flick 2010 is the first game to offer support for both HD devices in the same app at the lowest App Store price of $0.99.

Kick Flick 2010 is a soccer game in which the player takes free kicks. Emulating the free kick heroics of famous players such as David Beckham and Cristiano Ronaldo, the player must swerve the football around the wall of players and past the keeper, albeit by flicking the ball rather than kicking it. The game lets players compete online both worldwide and with friends.

The iPhone 4’s Retina Display boasts four times the number of pixels of its predecessors. And the iPad, introduced this year by Apple, houses an even larger number of pixels in its 9.7-inch screen. Existing games are scaled up to fill these HD displays, but games which are specifically written for the hardware can take full advantage of the extra screen resolution.

“Since both iPhone 4 and iPad have a similar resolution, they can share the same high definition content,” says developer Kevin Ng. “This means we’ll no doubt see many more games take advantage of the high definition screens of both devices in the near future. Packaging all the versions together so that the customer only has to buy the game once at 99 cents is, we think, great value.”

The update also adds a new game mode, gameplay tweaks and visual upgrades which users of older iOS devices can still access. “We’ve really upgraded the flick detection in this version, and it is now deadly accurate,” says Kevin Ng. “To curve the ball, you swipe through the ball off-center, much as the pros will kick the ball off-center in real life. We saw that in other games you must draw a curve to swerve the ball, and thought we could offer something more authentic and connected than that. We simply give the player full control over direction, power and spin through a single flick, and let physics do the rest.”

Chop Chop Soccer Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

Despite the success of the Chop Chop range of games Chop Chop Soccer is my first dalliance with the range of sports games that swap reality for oriental cuteness.

I’ve played most of the soccer games that are available in the App Store including Fifa, PES to X2F2010 all of which concentrate on being soccer simulations with accuracy and depth. Chop Chop Soccer however focusses on simplicity and fun which it ultimately succeeds in.

The gameplay is as bright and fun in the navigation menus as it is in the gameplay and when the three players, yes it just a 3-a-side game, run out onto the pitch you’ll see how cute they are immediately. Don’t take this as a sign cute gameplay though as these mini players play hard.

The controls of Chop Chop Soccer couldn’t be simpler, in fact you actually only need one finger to dribble, pass, shoot and tackle making this probably the simplest soccer game in the App Store.

You can play a single game or take part in one of four tournaments which will see you playing and teams from all across the world in a variety of ‘stadiums’ from small town USA to the Egyptian pyramids.

You can play the game from 3 different camera angles and play through four difficulty levels with the Expert level proving to be the ultimate challenge, in fact I wasn’t even able to score a single goal against the opposition at that level.

Chop Chop Soccer doesn’t aim to compete against the full on soccer simulators but what is does offer is an instant dose of crazy soccer action that provides the same gratification when a goal is scored as it does in the other more serious alternatives.

EA Mobile today announced the availability of it’s much awaited simulation title for the iPhone and iPod touch called “SimCity Deluxe” .

We had published the first screenshots of the game when it was announced in early May. SimCity Deluxe is now available in the App Store for $6.99 [iTunes Store]

Sim City is one of the all time great casual games, and SimCity Deluxe for iPhone is the latest title from this storied franchise.

The Screetch Rating: 4 out of 5 stars

If you are a fan of match three games then you are overwhelmed with options if you have an iPhone or iPod Touch and now there is a new take on the genre in the form of The Screetch which I hope is unrelated to the form Saved by the Bell star!

The game will be easy to pick for both experienced match three players and those new to this genre as all it takes to drop the spheres is touch the column that you wish the sphere to drop down. The premise of the game is to capture the the Screetch, and oily looking blob that is taking over the screen and this is done when matches are completed.

As you clear the playing area you’ll fill up the test tube on the side of the screen and once that’s full you’ll complete the level and move on to the next. as you would expect there are combo’s to be had power spheres in the form of electric bombs that will clear all spheres on the same horizontal and vertical plain when they are one of the three that are cleared.

When you successfully clear lines of sphere’s an adjacent sphere that has been or is being enveloped by the Screetch will be cleared of it’s oily substance while placing a sphere that doesn’t complete a match will see the Screetch’s oily tentacles take over one of your sphere’s. The battle between you and the Screetch is tense one.

One of the nice feature’s that the developers have taken care of and one that is not usually addressed is the fact that they’ve take care of those of the population that are afflicted with colorblindness. It’s a relatively simple fix but effective where each of the colored spheres are numbered and as one of those who suffers with colorblindness I can definitely say that it works.

As you progress through the levels the difficulty is cranked up with more oily spheres taking up the already crowded playing area.

Unfortunately there is no multi-player option but Facebook integration allows you to compete against your friends via your friends leader board while the global leader boards allow you to pit you wits against the best players in the world via 12 different leagues.

While the gameplay may not over too much significantly different from other match 3 style games the graphics certainly do especially on the iPhone 4 where the oil looks specifically gooey and shiny.

The only frustrating thing I found about The Screetch is the repetitive background music, fortunately the mute button is only a menu setting away!

If you are a fan of match 3 games then this is a great game to add to your arsenal.
