Just a few hours ago @pod2g updated his blog with the news that the untethered Jailbreak had been released for iDevices running the A4 chip, notably the iPhone 4 and the original iPad. Work on a Jailbreak for the iPhone 4S and the iPad 2 which run on the A5 chip is now being worked on.

A few days ago, @pod2g gave the untether to both the iPhone devteam and the chronic devteam. We’ve put it into redsn0w 0.9.10 and PwnageTool, and the chronic devteam put it into a Cydia package (the same set of exploits is in all three).

After @pod2g had completed the Jailbreak it was handed over to the Chronic Dev Team who finalized the release and made it available to the general public. As always you can check out http://jailbrea.kr/ to check the Jailbreak status of your device and click here for the details of this new jailbreak.

The software uses the same DFU-mode exploit that’s been used since the 2.x jailbreaks. From the Dev-Teams blog:

We’ve released a beta version of redsn0w for the iPhone3G and iPod Touch 2G at FW 4.1 or 4.0. It uses the same pwnage2 DFU-mode exploit that we’ve been using since the 2.x days. It does not include the SHAtter exploit developed by pod2g. Nothing new is revealed to Apple with this jailbreak.

(…) Note: if you have an “MC” model of the ipt2g, your 4.1 jailbreak will be tethered…sorry! (Consider rolling back to a FW supported by jailbreakme.com or spiritjb.com)

The Redsn0w software supports the iPhone 3G and iPod Touch 2G ONLY running the 4.1 or 4.0 firmware for the time being, and it’s currently only available for Mac. However, the Dev-Team do state that they are currently working on a Windows version, and this will be available following further testing.

To download the Redsn0w application, and for instructions on jailbreaking your device, please visit the Dev-Team’s blog.

If you choose to give this jailbreak a go, please let us know how it goes in the comments!
