WWDC Debut for Magic Trackpad?

Engadget broke an exclusive this morning detailing a reputed new input device from Apple. Dubbed the Magic Trackpad or Magic Slate, this new device offers Bluetooth connectivity in a form factor reminiscent of the Apple Wireless Keyboard. According to reports, the trackpad provides multitouch, finger-based inputs to devices that otherwise do not have a trackpad like desktop Macs.
Judging from the emphasis on mobile devices at this year’s WWDC, one has to wonder whether this will be positioned as a desktop input device for the iPad as well. This new trackpad, used in conjunction with the iPad Keyboard Dock or another Bluetooth keyboard, would provide a complete desktop solution for the iPad. It would eliminate the awkward type and reach workflow many have complained about when using the iPad in a desktop setting.
Stay tuned for the rest of the day as news starts to leak out before the keynote at 10AM PST. And don’t forget to come back for our live blog during the keynote. You can access it here.

The blogosphere has been busy reporting the latest iPhone 4G / HD rumors and as WWDC 2010 event approaches its scheduled date new details with specifications of the iPhone 4G are emerging on the web.
Earlier today Engadget reported that Vietnamese forum Taoviet published a series of leaked photos of the fourth generation iPhone and posted a video on YouTube. The teardown pics revealed that the device had an Apple branded A4 processor with the marking APL0398 which is also found inside Apple’s iPad.
The new model is reported to be different from the ‘lost’ prototype which Gizmodo bought for $5000. The device did not have any screws on either side of the Dock Connector and was running a screen diagnostic test called ‘bonfire’
The device appeared to have a cleaner design which suggests that this might be a newer prototype.
Do you think this is the next iPhone? Let us know what you think in the comments.

What is Siri? And why would Apple buy it?
You may or may not have heard of Siri. Siri is basically a new kind of search engine for mobile devices. Some have described it as part of the new web. A web that comes after the era of typing searches into Google.
Taking the description directly from the front page of their website is probably the best way to grasp what it does.
No more endless clicking on links and pages to get things done on the Internet. Delegate the work to Siri and relax while Siri takes care of it for you.
Need a table for 2 at your favorite restaurant next Thursday?
Just ask Siri.
Need a taxi right now?
Just ask Siri and with a single request the cab’s on its way.
Type or speak… it’s up to you. Siri acts on your behalf utilizing the best services on the web.
Simply put: it’s the new way to get things done.
Why is this important? Why would Apple want to own this technology? Well some of you may remember us reporting on iPhone patents where Apple plan to make your iPhone a wallet for financial transactions. And a further patent we also mentioned where Apple have outlined a way of making future iPhones e-ticket repositories for cinema, concert or even plane bookings. Perhaps with an RFID tag built into your iPhone for easy verification when you reach the concert hall door, or your flight check in.
Put Siri’s technology on the iPhone as an intrinsic part of iPhone OS, or a system app, and then add in those two extra features and the iPhone has just become the must have PDA we all dreamed of owning.
Simply put it will become an indispensable centre-point to our daily lives!
So that’s probably why Apple snapped up Siri.
Does the iPhone being the centre of your life appeal to you? Let us know in the comments.
Apple’s Next Gen iPod touch Prototype With Camera on eBay

The last couple of weeks certainly haven’t been stellar for Apple’s R&D department. First came the loss and retrieval of the next generation iPhone 4G compliments of Gray Powell. Now something just as intriguing showed up this weekend on eBay and subsequently disappeared. Remember those rumors of the third generation iPod Touch getting a camera? Remember how it was almost a lock and then on the day they were supposed to appear they were a no-show? Well it seems they were closer than even any of us know.
Several tech news outlets are reporting the mysterious appearance, and subsequent disappearance, of two prototype iPod Touches that were listed on the popular auction site. The prototypes carry the rumored cameras everyone expected last year and were running a development version of the iPhone OS. Labelled DVT-1 and DVT-2, the prototypes have the same finish and appearance of a third generation iPod Touch in every other way besides the rear-facing camera. While some may speculate these may be prototypes for an upcoming version, the consensus among the technorati is they are more likely iPod Touches that should have been versus ones that may come. Of course, if Apple has ironed out the design, usage, or supply line problems that caused the camera to be yanked in the first place, we might very well see camera-bearing Touches this summer.
Sadly, before I could get my Paypal account warmed up, they were yanked off of eBay almost as fast as they appeared. Whether this was a legitimate seller looking to unload something they thought they had title to or just someone shopping them to gadget sites like Gizmodo in a “private sale”, it looks like this tantalizing view is all we get for now. It offers one more view behind the sacred veil that covers Apple’s research and development processes. We would probably be astounded at the number and configurations of prototypes Apple tests in the run of product development. The gamut of rumors we hear in the year or two between product releases are only small glimpses of the prototype capabilities someone has seen. And of course it is somewhat in Apple’s best interests to keep these rumors coming in a steady trickle from Cupertino. Rumor builds interest and interest builds anticipation. How much product do you think Apple moves on curiosity alone?
It will be interesting to see the product line up that comes our way in June. There will be a new iPhone, I think Messers Powell and Denton have confirmed that for us adequately. I think this latest breach in the Reality Distortion Field proves we might also be looking for new camera-bearing iPod Touches as well.
What do you think about this latest leak? Would you upgrade to a camera-toting fourth generation iPod Touch? Is a camera just a cheap upgrade to make people buy new units? Leave us your thoughts in the comments section.
I have to say I had my doubts when I saw the pictures of the “iPhone 4G” being passed around the web in the last 24 hours. Firstly the image had popped up on Twitter a while back from a different source : [twitpic]
But also it was simply such an awful overall design that it could only, at best, be a prototype. Remember those pre-production iPad prototype pictures that got leaked before the official launch? They were ugly too!
I guess it could possibly have been a prototype Steve was carrying around personally. But I am not sure he drinks in public in bars in San Jose these days.
Knowing how secretive Apple are the chances of an employee dropping one in a bar seemed ridiculous. If you remember the stories of Apple employes working on new devices having to keep their equipment covered in their locked rooms when not in use. And having to put a red light on outside their room to warn other employees of the fact that secret equipment could be on display when they were actually working with hardware prototypes. Well, that does make the bar story sound a little far fetched!
Finally, living in Asia in the heart of counterfeit land there are so many copies being pumped out of factories here it seemed more likely that this was some Chinese copy, or unofficial iPhone 4G for the Asian market.
It turns out the iPhone 4G or iPhone HD we’ve been staring at trying to decide if we love or hate is actually a Japanese iPhone copy.
The original web page that hit on this information is in Spanish. So here is a google translation link : [translate.google.com]
Got to laugh at the translation :
apparently found in a bar in San Jose (California), in a pillow case for an iPhone 3G
But you get the gist from the bottom of the page. We would say case closed.
Are you disappointed? Or relieved? Did this look like an iPhone from Apple to you? Let us know in the comments.

Apple iPhone 4G / HD Revealed?

Apple might be releasing a new iPhone 4G / HD this summer. It will probably be released on June 22nd during Apple’s WWDC 2010. The only real surprises left are the specs, appearance, and pricing of the new unit. Now, thanks to something lost and found on the floor of a bar, we may have our first look at the forthcoming iPhone.
Engadget is running pictures and a story of an alleged Apple device found inside of an iPhone 3G case on the floor of a San Jose bar. The device is encased in the familiar black and chrome trim with etched Apple and lettering on the back. While it contains some of the familiar iPhone elements, including a home button and small rectangular ear piece, it appears to be slightly taller, thicker, and more angular. Some of the physical button set ups are also different from current iPhone models. According to the report the device has a forward facing camera, 80GB of storage, and was running an unfamiliar version of the iPhone OS.
Now as the article points out, this isn’t necessarily the gospel version of the iPhone HD. It could very well be the production version, and if it is, Apple is taking the iPhone in a decidedly new direction. Otherwise this might just be a prototype that made an unintended appearance. I think most people have the impression that each new iPhone design comes to Steve Jobs in a dream, he jots it down on paper, and a new product is born. Quite to the contrary. Each new iteration of the iPhone (or any electronic device) goes through extensive planning on paper and prototyping. At any one time there may be five or six prototypes of a device floating around, one which may eventually become the production version, or each incorporating parts that combine to make the final cut. This may not even be a prototype of the next iPhone but instead a prototype of something two or three years down the road.
If it is the production version of the iPhone 4G / HD, it does confirm one of the main rumors floating around. The forward facing camera has been on the wishlist of many an iPhone pundit and fan and this phone seems to make it a reality. It would be really interesting to get a chance to crack the device open and see what’s inside. Would we find an A4 chip in there? Would we find the iPad innards shrunk down into the new iPhone as some have suggested will be the case? Despite the pedigree and intention of this found technology, one thing is for certain; it will only fuel the rumor and speculation machine. With the iPad out, the iPhone HD will be the latest hot new device of 2010.
Do you have a wishlist for the next iPhone? What makes video calls and video chat so compelling for you? Would it be a killer app that makes you switch from your Droid or Nexus One to the iPhone? Would anything make you make that switch? Leave us your thoughts in the comments.

Steve Jobs was in attendance at the Oscars tonight in the US, where a new iPad TV ad aired. It seems the Oscars are the new Super Bowl as far as Apple are concerned!
The same advert is now up on Apple’s front page. The video is kind of a fast forward through the main features of the iPad’s User Interface and Apps. Nothing particularly new there apart from a quick shot of someone inserting an image into a text document which looks quite nifty.
One thing which this pop video style advert confirms once and for all is that there is no camera on the iPad yet. If there was to be one at launch it would have surely been showcased in this latest advert.

2:47 PM: Touch_Reviews Now, Electronic Arts.
2:47 PM: Touch_Reviews Travis Boatman from EA is up. “When Apple invited us to come on site, we couldn’t have been more excited. But we wanted to check out this device’s performance as gamers.”

2:47 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:48 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:48 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:48 PM: Touch_Reviews Need for Speed Shift on screen. Looks pretty good. “Building for the iPad is a little different — it’s kind of like holding an HD display up to your face. It’s really cool.”
2:48 PM: Touch_Reviews EA says the first thing they wanted to check out was the device’s performance, and for that, Need For Speed. They’re showing off a BMW M3, which looks quite good (definitely better than the iPhone), but not as good as on a PC. It looks somewhere inbetween, which is kinda the point of the device. Though it’s closer to the iPhone. “It’s like holding an HD screen up to your face.”
2:48 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:49 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:49 PM: Touch_Reviews Last up is MLB.com.
2:50 PM: Touch_Reviews Chad Evans from MLB.com — “We were excited to build something for the iPad. We had to create a whcole new experience for this display.”

2:51 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:51 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:52 PM: Touch_Reviews Nice, live video within the app. Full screen too.
2:52 PM: Touch_Reviews Scott: “While we wait for those apps to come out, we can all run our existing apps… and that is the app story for the iPad.” And Steve is back.
2:53 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:53 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:53 PM: Touch_Reviews “Isn’t that awesome? These guys only had two weeks. So we’ve seen some really great apps. Let me show you another… one of our apps. That’s an ebook reader. Now Amazon has done a great job of pioneering this… we’re going to stand on their shoulders for this. Our new app is called iBooks.”
2:53 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:54 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:54 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:54 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:54 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:54 PM: Touch_Reviews It’s got a bookshelf, and the screen actually looks like you’re looking down at a book, with extraneous stuff on the side that looks like the side of a book. It’s called iBooks. And, there’s even an iBook store that has Penguin, Harper Collins, Simon & Schuster, Macmillan, Hachette book group.
2:55 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:55 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:55 PM: Touch_Reviews Demo time. Steve is showing it off.
2:56 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:57 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:57 PM: Touch_Reviews “It’s just so simple.”
2:57 PM: Touch_Reviews And here’s what the book is like. You can flip the page by tapping anywhere on the right, change the size, or flip back by tapping on the left. Or, drag the page over manually using touch.
2:57 PM: Touch_Reviews The store is very similar to iTunes. Same modal pop-overs. Pricing doesn’t look too bad. The book page display is nice. You can turn pages slowly — really slick looking page animation.
2:57 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:57 PM: Touch_Reviews You can skip directly to chapters from the table of contents, and there are photos, as you’d expect
2:58 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:58 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:58 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:58 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:58 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:58 PM: Touch_Reviews So iBooks again, a great reader, a great online bookstore. All in one really great app. We use the ePub format. We’re very excited about this.”
2:59 PM: Touch_Reviews But, how about iWork? There’s iWork for the iPad.
2:59 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:59 PM: Touch_Reviews “Now, something very exciting… iWork. A little over a year ago I asked the head of our team about creating iWork for the iPad. The reaction was… ‘ahhh they require a lot of horsepower'”
2:59 PM: Touch_Reviews
2:59 PM: Touch_Reviews “Could the tablet handle that? You betcha. But they required a new UI — here’s Phil Schiller to tell you about it.”
2:59 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:00 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:00 PM: Touch_Reviews Phil is out. “Good morning everyone. iWork is a suite of apps that millions of customers love.”
3:01 PM: Touch_Reviews Guys hit the retweet button and share the link!
3:01 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:01 PM: Touch_Reviews

3:01 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:02 PM: Touch_Reviews Bringing you the latest from multiple sorces – Touch Reviews
3:02 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:02 PM: Touch_Reviews He’s showing off making new presentations by tapping a new presentation, and it brings up a new layout format with slide navigator on the left and the current slide on the right.
3:02 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:02 PM: Touch_Reviews Phil’s showing off how you can drag and drop slides around. You can also pick up multiple slides by holding one slide and tapping others, to put it into the pile.
3:03 PM: Touch_Reviews You can also resize and move elements around on a slide by just tapping and dragging, just as you’d imagine it would work.
3:03 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:03 PM: Touch_Reviews We’ll say this — iWork looks really robust. Far more than an iPhone app. Lots of options, lots of ways to work with your data.
3:04 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:04 PM: Touch_Reviews We are very excited about iWork! – Touch Reviews
3:04 PM: Touch_Reviews You can also add animations and transitions by picking a pre-generated one from a list.
3:04 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:05 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:05 PM: Touch_Reviews Automatic transition animations. Very nice. “So that’s a preview. Now let’s go to Pages.”
3:05 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:05 PM: Touch_Reviews Automatic transition animations. Very nice. “So that’s a preview. Now let’s go to Pages.”
3:05 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
I suppose the iPad would be a pretty good presentation device, letting you see the screens on your device and controlling it while it’s being projected onto a wall through the 30-pin dock connector. (Video out is still unconfirmed, this is just my guess.)
3:05 PM: Touch_Reviews “Like Keynote I see a gallery of documents.”
3:06 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
Now Phil’s going to Pages. He’s showing off documents he’s created. He’s scrolling through text, and when he taps on text, the keyboard pops up. If he wants to focus on typing, he turns the thing horizontal.

3:07 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:07 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:07 PM: Touch_Reviews “It is the most beautiful word processor you’ve ever used.” – Phil Schiller
3:07 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:08 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:08 PM: Touch_Reviews He now brings up Numbers. I hope he’s not planning on making us sit through a session of him doing his taxes.
3:08 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:08 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:09 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
I suppose an iWork-like app was all that was missing from the iPhone in order to allow businesspeople to “work from the road” and leave their computers at home.
3:09 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:09 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
So far we’ve covered ebooks and newspapers (TV and movies were already there from the iPhone), but we haven’t covered magazines yet. I wonder what that’s going to be like.
3:10 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:10 PM: Touch_Reviews It looks as though these new dropdowns menus are a major part of the iPad OS. Will be interesting to see how this translates to the iPhone and iPod touch. Is there going to be room? Or will they be left out entirely?
3:10 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:10 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
New York Times looks like they got the iWork rumor correct.
3:11 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:11 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:11 PM: Touch_Reviews And the iWork demo is done. “So what are we going to charge for applications like this? We’re gong to charge just $9.99 each.” He means $10 for Pages, $10 for Keynote… etc.
3:11 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
They’re all compatible with iWork on the Mac, and you can connect to a projector (confirmed).
3:12 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:12 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:12 PM: Touch_Reviews “That’s iWork on the iPad.” And Steve is… back!
3:12 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
Steve Jobs is back on stage. “Isn’t it great?”
3:12 PM: Touch_Reviews Thec iPad syncs over USB just like an iPhone or iPod
3:13 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:13 PM: Touch_Reviews “Now I’d like to talk about wireless networking. Every iPad has WiFi… but we’re also going to have models with 3G.”
3:13 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:13 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:13 PM: Touch_Reviews “Now what does it cost for the data plans? Well in the US carriers charge about $60 a month. We have a real breakthrough. Two awesome plans for iPad owners. The first one gives you 250MB of data a month for $14.99.”
3:14 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:14 PM: Touch_Reviews “We have an unlimited plan for just $29.99 a month.”
3:14 PM: Touch_Reviews “We have a breakthrough deal with AT&T.” Wow. Some serious sharp intakes of breath here.
3:15 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:15 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
And, AT&T will let you use the Wi-Fi hotspots for free.
3:15 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:15 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
You can activate this service on the iPad itself, and there’s no contract–it’s prepaid and you can cancel anytime.
3:16 PM: Touch_Reviews “So we have a breakthrough deal in the US. We hope to have our international deals in the June / July timeframe. However, all of the iPad 3G models are unlocked, and they use the new GSM microSIMs.”
3:16 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:17 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
“So, iPad. It’s phenomenal to hold the internet in your hand.”
3:17 PM: Touch_Reviews “WiFI plus 3G if you want it. So iPad. It’s phenomenal. Email is fantastic, best device for photos, great for music, great for video. It runs almost all of the 140k apps on the app store, as well as a whole new generation of apps.”
3:18 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
Steve is going through the features now, like music, email, and video. It runs “almost all” the apps on the app store.
3:18 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:18 PM: Touch_Reviews “And the new iBooks application. You can carry literally thousands of books around. And the iWork suite of apps with the best UI we’ve ever seen for something like this.”
3:18 PM: Touch_Reviews “What should we price it at?”
3:18 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:18 PM: Touch_Reviews “If you listen to the pundits, we’re going to price it under $1000, which is code for $999. When we set out to develop this, we had ambitious tech goals, but we had aggressive price goals.”
3:19 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
“We had a very aggressive price goal, because we wanted to put it in the hands of a lot of people.”
3:19 PM: Touch_Reviews “And just like we were able to meet or exceed our tech goals, we have met our cost goals… iPadc pricing starts at $499.”
3:20 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:20 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:20 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:20 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
And the 3G models cost an extra $130, so $629, $729 and $829 for the 3G-capable models.
3:21 PM: Touch_Reviews “We will be shipping these in 60 days. 3G models will ship in 90 days.”
3:21 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:21 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:21 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:22 PM: Touch_Reviews “We’ve got some really great accessories. First one is a dock. You know the slideshow I showed you? When it’s in the dock you have a great picture frame. We have another dock that’s interesting… the keyboard dock.” What!?
3:22 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
There’sc another dock for the iPad: a keyboard dock. There’s a “full size mechanical keyboard”, and it slides in in portrait mode.
3:22 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:22 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:23 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:23 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:23 PM: Touch_Reviews “Now we made a video we’re going to put on the web… let’s run it here.”
3:23 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
There’s no camera on the back, and there doesn’t seem like there’s a front camera either.
3:24 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
Jon Ive says “there’s no wrong or right way to hold it.” “I don’t have to change myself to fit the product, it fits me.”
Jason Chen:
“It’s going to change the way we do the things we do.” Phil Schiller
3:24 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:24 PM: Touch_Reviews Jonny Ive talking about magical devices. “That’s exactly what the iPad is.” Magical? Really? Doesn’t seem that magical to us!

In landscape mode, that is.
Jason Chen:
The demo video also shows how to type on the thing: like a laptop’s keyboard. “It’s practically the same size as a laptop keyboard.”
3:26 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:26 PM: Touch_Reviews So to recap. No multitasking. No word on notifications.
3:27 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:27 PM: Touch_Reviews No phone calls from what we can tell.
3:27 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:27 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:28 PM: Touch_Reviews “The iPad is the most advanced piece of tech that I’ve ever worked on at Apple.”
3:28 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:28 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:28 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:29 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
The backlight for the display is LED, but otherwise they use IPS technology, for better off-angle viewing, claims Apple.
3:29 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:29 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:30 PM: Touch_Reviews Okay, finally some casual typing shown! On the lap folks.

3:31 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:31 PM: Touch_Reviews Steve is back!
3:31 PM: Touch_Reviews “Do we have what it takes to establish a third category of products?”
3:31 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:31 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:31 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:32 PM: Touch_Reviews “We think we’ve got the goods. We think we’ve done it. Another thing we’re excited about is that there’s already 75m people who know how to use this because of how many iPhones and iPod touches we’ve shipped.”
3:32 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:32 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:32 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
Steve says the iPad is “our most advanced technology in a magical & revolutionary device at an unbelievable price.”

3:33 PM: Touch_Reviews
3:33 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
Apple says they want to be at the “intersection of technology and liberal arts.”
3:34 PM: Touch_Reviews “We’ve always tried to be at the intersection of technology and liberal arts — we want to make the best tech, but have them be intuitive. It’s the combination of these two things that have let us make the iPad.”
3:34 PM: Touch_Reviews Jason Chen:
There’s a hands-on area, so we’ll have hands-on with this soon.
