The iOS operating system, used on iPhone, iPad, and iPod touch, accounted for over 60% of the mobile / tablet web traffic in October according to Net Applications latest data.
Net Applications released its market share data recently and it shows that iOS accounted for 61.64% of mobile web traffic in October. This was up from 54.65% in September and 44.34% in October of 2010. By comparison, second-place Android accounted for 18.90% of mobile web traffic. Most of the Android traffic was coming from smartphones rather than tablets.
October was an eventful month with both iOS 5 and the new iPhone 4S being released mid-month. The release of iOS 5 spiked Internet traffic in several countries and the iPhone 4S sold over 4 million units its first weekend. These two events probably influenced the reported jump in traffic.
