BallFallDown, note the lack of spaces in the title, is a new style of app for the iPad which is less game and more creative. The app is aimed at a younger audience but I could easily see that this could be attractive to any age with an interest in creativity, physics and design.
The best way to describe BallFallDown is that it’s a pinball designer with the ability to both design the playing area and play it, minus any scoring!
The design is all played on a single screen with a menu of available items accessible from the top of the screen. These items include a range of balls with a sports theme and a range of interactive items that can all be placed into the playing area by simply taping on them, you can then drag around the screen to move and use two fingers to re-size and rotate.
This is all very simple to do and once you start the balls flowing, there is no limit to the amount of balls on the screen at any one time, you can continue to adjust the interactive items to their full potential.
While there are multiple balls and interactive pieces to choose from there is only one play area, that of a wooden board and it would be nice to see additional styles to choose from.
The app comes in two flavors, a Free version which is advertisement free and a Deluxe version where the main differences being the amount of balls and other items that are available. All these items can also be purchased via in app purchasing from the free version also.
While this app can be a lot of fun especially for those with a creative mind there are a couple of features missing that could make this app even better. The first would be the ability to share your design with friends or via a global list of designs that people can upload and download from.
The other item that could make this app into a killer app would be the ability to add scoring to it so that it becomes a hybrid of design and and game, adding these two features would certainly add extra value to the app.
- Easy to use controls
- Great range of balls and interactive items
- Can ‘play’ and design the levels
- No ability to share designs
