Quarrel Deluxe Review: At its core a word game, but it’s crossed with a strategy game, such as Stratego, for a different twist entirely.
Quarrel Deluxe starts with selecting a character (male or female) and then an army (choose from eight, ranging from cavemen to aliens). You then can choose to go through the tutorial or head straight to the play. Even though it’s a bit lengthy, I might recommend the tutorial. There’s a lot to this game that you’ll need to pick up on.
There are four modes of game play: Quick Match, Make Match, Domination, and Daily Challenge. In Quick Match, the territory is divided between the player and their opponent. Each side is given an equal number of squares on a “board” and a small group of varying numbers of soldiers are allocated to each square. You select an adjacent square to do battle with and the soldiers line up on the disputed border.
At this point Quarrel Deluxe turns into a word game. The number of soldiers on each side determines the number of letters you will be able to play. You are given eight random letters, each with a different point value, from which to make a word. However, if you only have five soldiers in the battle, you can only make a five-letter word. Your goal is to maximize the points-value of your word. The battle is decided based on the highest points-value between you and your opponent, and a tie goes to the quickest player. If you win, you take over their territory. If you lose, they take over yours. There can also be a prisoner exchange as part of the victory depending on the makeup of the battle.
Then it’s back to the strategy part of the game where you decide your next move. You can reinforce your positions or challenge for new territory. The more soldiers you can get on a square of territory, the better. The words you play do not have to use all the soldiers on the square, but having more soldiers gives you more options for playing words.
The other game modes can have you playing against multiple computer-driven opponents, each with their own style of play. You can also connect your games through Facebook and Twitter, as well as Game Center, to share your victories (or defeats) and provoke your friends into competition.
The animations and images are spoofs of aggression, so even as one row of soldiers is attacking another it’s rather amusing. Little angels with wings float away from the defeated. It’s almost a 1960s Batman-style “kapow,” “splatt,” and “bam” type of fight. And the music is suited to the territory. An island location has island-style music, albeit a game-show version of island-style music.
While Quarrel Deluxe {$4.99} is a little pricier than many iOS games, there’s a lot to this one. If you’ve gotten bored with other word games this may be the one that mixes is up enough to put your word skills to the test, and develop a whole new set of strategy skills on the side. If you like strategy games, this one is a good one to see if your word skills are good enough to execute your strategy. And if you’re a fan of both, well this could be the perfect game for you.

Word Warrior by Faro Entertainment is a word game with a twist. You are the warrior who must fight the evil forces to restore peace once more in the kingdom. Fight and attack your enemy by finding words from a row of letters. Each word you find gives you the chance to attack your enemy. Watch out though he does fight back!
When you start the game you will see the words at the bottom of your screen and the Word Warrior and his enemy at the top half of the screen. When the level starts you need to find words from the letters provided as quick as you can. Each time you find one it will then attack and take hit points off the enemy. To defeat the enemy you need to get the enemies hit points to zero. The same goes for you though when he hits you.
Your hit points are on the left and the enemies are on the right. In the middle is the Attack Timer and Enemy Counter. When the timer is depleted the enemy attacks. Each level there will be a set number of enemies to defeat and this amount is shown here also. After you have defeated one another will appear.
When you have found a word you simple press the attack button to submit it, if you make a mistake you can press the back button to take a letter away. The game moves very fast though and you have to be able to type very quickly. The words are easier enough to find but I found it quite difficult to type words before he attacked me. When I got to level three I was already struggling a little and having to try over and over.
There are bonus tiles to help you fire, ice, poison and lightening all helping you to defeat your opponent. After each level there is a chance to earn new weapons and armor which help you increase your skills and defense. As you fight your way through the game you will be awarded experience points when you earn enough of these you level up.
On some of the levels you will be set certain tasks, for example all the words must be four letter words. So if you submit a three letter word it will not accept it. To start though you will be able to find any word with three or more letters.
The music is very apt for the scenery of the game and the graphics have a nice retro feel to it. I do feel though that the game is far too hard at the early stages and you are really not given the chance to type. If this could be slightly improved it could become a great addictive game.

BOGGLE for iPad [rating: 3.5/5]
It was back in September of 2009 when Boggle was initially launched as an iPhone/iPod Touch application and it was received well. In our review here at touchreviews.net we loved it’s realism to the original game but felt that it was lacking in the multi-player mode and it’s use of Twitter and/or Facebook. Well there is no surprise that the price has gone up, with the original version costing $1.99 you’ll need to find an additional $3 to get th iPad version of the word game classic. So what has changed in this new version for Apple’s new toy the iPad and what do you get for your extra $3?
Well the simple answer is not much with the only obvious difference being the enhanced graphics that do look nice and shiny on the larger screen of the iPad. The game play itself though is much the same.
There are two main game modes Quick Play and then Advanced Play which in turn has a few different ways to play. Quick Play describes itself pretty well, as soon as you launch Quick Play mode and after a quick shake of your iPad the single player game is launched and you are started on your 3 minute word search. It’s easy to play for adults and children a like with a simple stroke of your finger across the letters the valid words are automatically added to your word list while invalid words will remain in play until you can either add to them to make a valid word or click the x to clear the word and start again.
Once the game is over you can either replay the game, start a new one or challenge a friend to beat your score. This challenge option hasn’t changed from the original iPhone version and while it’s fun to see how your friends compare to you scores this email challenge is definitely lacking.
The Advanced Mode offers a few more options including the ability to play against up to 3 friends via Pass and play. This mode is the same as the others where each player will take it in turns to use their 3 minutes to find as many words as possible before passing the iPad onto the next player to for them to use the same set of letters to beat the other players scores.
Another option within Advanced Play mode is to use some power options including Panic Flips and Portal Cubes as well as editing the time limit. These two power options enable special moves in the game where the words you spell will be rotated to offer more options and also mix up all the die if you hang around too long without making a word.
Again these options are all good but still leaves me feeling wanting for more especially when you consider the multi-player and social integration options available with EA’s other titles where online multi-player options are available and offer more fun.
Throughout all of these games you can unlock achievements and keep track of your success via a long list of game stats. There is also a high-score board but it’s only local high score table to comparing your successes and high scores is limited to the previously mention Challenge Mode or local players only.
If you enjoy word games and have even played the classic board game version of Boggle before then there is no reason that you won’t enjoy EA’s latest version for the iPad. However if you are looking for a more social game or already have the iPhone/iPod Touch version there is little reason to buy Boggle for iPad and may prefer EA’s other word game alternative Scrabble.
