It appears that Instapaper has finally got some serious competition on it’s hands as Readability makes its standalone debut on the iPhone and iPad.

You may already be familiar with Readability if you’ve used some of the apps that it’s been integrated with and for me that’s Tweetbot so I’m already aware of how beautifully it rips out all the unwanted content from web pages to provide a greater reading experience.

Readability automatically turns web pages into a clean, elegant, single-column reading view. With beautiful typography provided by Hoefler & Frere-Jones, the reading experience in Readability is second-to-none.

What the standalone app adds though is the ability to sync those booked marked pages via a multitude of devices beyond that of your iPhone and iPad. This becomes especially useful when you are on your computer browsing the web as with the Readability addon you can add any page to all your devices at the click of a button for reading it later.

The app allows you to customize you reading experience too with a choice of fonts, sizes and a choice of day/night modes.

Readability is a free universal app and is available now and makes the reading experience on your mobile device a pleasure with a sleek interface.

Tweetbot for iPad Review

One of the most requested features of Tweetbot for iPhone users appears to have been an iPad version of their favorite Twitter app, while the request appeared to be falling on deaf ears we were all taken by surprise recently when not only did the iPhone Tweetbot app get an update but the also released Tweetbot for iPad. Does the big screen version dominate like the iPhone version does?

The first thing you’ll notice about Tweetbot for iPad is it’s nice clean look. Everything you need is available on one screen whether you have the screen vertically or horizontally, with your timeline taking up the majority of the view while the menu down the left side of the screen gives you access to various views.

All of the great features that you may already know and love from Tweetbot for iPhone are also available in the iPad version. You’ll get picture thumbnails in tweets, the ability to mute people, hashtags & clients, Tweetmarker support and push notifications which considering you get all of this for just $2.99 probably makes it the best 3 dollars you’ll ever spend.

Tweetbot for iPad {App Store} also offers multiple gestures, swiping a Tweet to the left right and right gives you access to related tweets and replies while a double tap will take you directly to the detailed view of the Tweet in question. There is also a triple tap gesture and this can me configured to your requirements. The triple tap will take to a reply screen by default but you can change it to Rwetweet, Favorite, Translate or a Favstar view depending on your preference.

Heading into the settings of Tweetbot for iPad opens up a whole bunch of configurable features, from controlling the sound and services such as syncing, image uploading, read later and url shorting to granular notification controls and a great sleep option that will silence Tweetbot for iPad between given hours. Perfect for muting Tweetbot alerts at night when you don’t want to be disturbed.

One of the new features in both Tweetbot versions if the refresh feature. This will refresh your timelime every 5 minutes without manual intervention. This makes it the ideal app for iPad to have sitting on your desktop allowing you to work will your timeline updates all on it’s own.

Tweetbot for iPad certainly continues where the iPhone version left off, it’s feature rich and instantly usable, putting it head and shoulders above the competition. Some users may complain that it’s not a universal app given the the differences are only cosmetic, however, given that they are both only $2.99 I do think that $6 for the best Twtitter clients on both the iPhone and iPad is still an absolute steal.

If you haven’t already gone and purchased Tweetbot for iPad do so now!

[rating: 3.5/5]

Tweet Hunt – Celebirdies Review: You can’t get away from Twitter these days, it’s everywhere. And now it’s being created into a game thanks to the range of Tweet Hunt games, and specifically in this case the celebirdies version which adds the twist of enabling the tweets of celebrities in the game as you play.

So how does Tweet Hunt – Celebirdies integrate the tweets? The game is a simple game of target practice where you take aim with a slingshot in an effort to shoot down birds which are tweets from the specific celebrity that is part of the level you are playing.

There are 4 game types to play through Celebirdies, Top Trends, My Tweeps and Practice. Anyone familiar with Twitter will be familiar with the content of the first 3 game types. Celebirdies uses the tweets of Twitters famous and infamous, inc. Ashton Kucther, Donald Trump and Kanye West to name but a few while Top Trends uses the real time trending topics of the time that you play.

Both of these game modes can be used without having a Twitter account, however if you wish to play with your Twitter stream and followers you must sign in with your Twitter account so that the game can access your Twitter stream.

So what is the game actually like? Each game type is pretty similar, a whole bunch of birds will launch onto your screen float around for a bit and then float off and it’s your task to shoot them down before they fly off the screen. The birds fly in different routes and get progressively faster so you need to be quick on the draw as you pull back your slingshot and launch your ammunition towards them.

If you strike enough birds down you will move onto the next round and the number of rounds between the levels vary. Each level ends with a battle against a single bird which you will have to hit multiple times before the time runs out to progress.

At various times a Twitter Fail Whale will also float across the back of the screen and successfully hitting it will result in all active birds being shot down in a single swipe. As you play you will earn points and while some of the celebirdies are unlocked by completing the levels some of the others are unlocked by spending the points to unlock them.

While the game won’t be winning any awards for it’s graphics they are effective enough as are the sound effects and music. The use of live Twitter information is a nice twist but the game gets a little monotonous after a while and the novelty wears a little thin pretty quickly. What is nice and is something that always goes down well with me is that Tweet Hunt is a Universal app meaning that with a single purchase you can play it on either your iPhone or iPad.

Twitterena+ Pro [rating: 4/5]

If you haven’t heard of Twitter you must be living under a rock or somewhere even more desolate, isolated and cut off from the modern world! But presuming that you have heard of Twitter and that you have an iPhone or iPod Touch then you have probably noticed that there are an avalanche of Twitter apps for you to choose from. A lot of these apps are free while some ask for your hard earned cash in exchange for there wares and one of those is Twitterena+ Professional Edition, the older brother of its 99c version Twitterena. So what does the extra $3 get you?

twitterena+ professional edition unique features

✔ Facebook integration
✔ multiple account support
✔ custom tweeting background
✔ quick watch users
✔ easy profile location update
✔ priority customer support

Over and above the $1 version you’ll also get to customize your background, the ability to update your profile location and priority customer support (which I’ve never needed) but to be honest the big additional features are Facebook integration and multiple account support which are both integrated very well.

At any point when you are Tweeting you can sign in to your Facebook account and choose either to Tweet and update your Facebook status one Tweet at a time or fix your Facebook settings so that every update will go to both Twitter and Facebook. As a user of both platforms having the ability to update both at the same time is worth the money alone.

Multiple accounts by adding and then switching between them, so if you are expecting to be able to tweet from multiple accounts at the same time or see a stream of multiple accounts you won’t get what you’re looking for.

The basics are all covered well. If you want to send a quick Tweet that is easily accessed via Tweet button in the top left corner of the screen. From the Tweet page you can add any of your saved photo’s via TwitPic, and a location via GPS or you can easily access your ‘Tweeps’, (a list of all your Twitter friends), to include them in your Tweet.

Across the bottom of the screen are quick access links to your Tweets, Mentions, Messages, Favorites and Search. All are handled in the standard way with the ability to drill through to links and other included Twitterers at the tap of a button. The full Twitter experience is completed by the ability to Search both by keyword and location and the ability to see the current Twitter trends too.

There is a lot to unwrap in this Twitter app and you clearly get a lot of bang for your buck including themes and customizations which is always a good addition to any app. You can also control how you are alerted to new Tweets, the size of the text, background image and the frequency of refreshes. One of the nicest things however though is the ability to use Twitterena+ Pro Edition either vertically or horizontally making Tweeting even simpler thanks to the larger keyboard.

If you’re not a power user of Twitter, one of the less fully featured apps will probably suffice, but if you are looking for the full Twitter experience then you should definitely give Twitterena+ Pro Edition a look.
