With extensions developers can tie into Apple’s sharing sheet, add custom actions, access iCloud drive, notification centre, enable custom keyboards and more.

Apple has introduced a dedicated API for the photos app called “PhotoKit”. Adding filters or editing photos has become increasingly popular practice. iPhone camera is the most popular mobile camera in the world so providing a new API to make editing photos easier is a great benefit for users.

The photography category in the App Store is filled with image editing apps and perhaps most users own more than just one. iOS 8 will allow developers to offer native user interface within the Photos app to embed third-party filters and editing tools.

With a tap of the Action button, you can do things like assign a photo to a contact or print a document. iOS 8 allows developers to extend those capabilities. For instance, a developer could make it possible to watermark documents, add something to a wish list, or translate text to a different language.Apple

Slidely is a video postcards app that allows you to select up-to 15 videos and photos, select a theme, music theme and create a video postcard for you. The developers shared a sneak peek of the upcoming update for iOS 8 with us.

The video shows launching the Photos app selecting few photos and videos and then creating a video postcard without ever leaving the app. This makes the entire workflow so easy that we expect people to become more creative with their photos on Instagram, Twitter and Vine.

Prior to iOS 8 if one had to apply any third-party edits, it would require importing photos into the third-party app, applying edits and then exporting it. The best part about extensions is that it does not require you to download any extra app from the App Store. If you download an app from the App Store supports extensions it will be automatically available for you to use.

iOS 8 will be available for download on September 17 just two days before iPhone 6 and iPhone 6 plus go on sale. The update brings many more enhancements that include all new Messages app, iCloud Drive, custom keyboards, Health app, continuity and much more.

One of the things that iPhones and other iOS devices have done is made it easier for people to keep in touch with each other. Now that includes beautiful, high quality note cards as well.

Cards {Free} is a new app that requires iOS5, but works on iPhones, iPod touches, or iPads. It offers 21 choices in several different themes such as Thank You, Holiday, Birthday, Travel, etc.

Once you’ve decided on the style of card you wish to send, you can add a photo by either taking one right within the app, or you can select one from your photo gallery. You then go on to change the message on both the outside and the inside of the app. There are not a lot of options for editing the design, but that may be an advantage since it keeps things simple and quick.

Lastly you add the addresses to your card, both the sender’s and the recipient’s. The placeholders are tied to your address book, so you can simply select someone from your list and their information is put in place. Or you can type it in yourself. And the address is checked against the (U.S.) postal service database to make sure it will get to where it’s going.

After that it’s simply a matter of pressing the “Buy Now” button and your beautifully made, high-quality card is on it’s way. To top it off, you’ll receive a notification on your iOS device when your card is delivered. All this quality and service comes reasonably priced. If you’re mailing it within in the U.S., it’s just $2.99 or if you’re more globally connected it will cost you $4.99 – about the cost of a regular greeting card, without requiring the trip to the store and the post office.

With creating and sending greeting cards being this simple and reasonably priced, you simply have no excuse not to keep in touch with even those less technology-connected individuals.

iCard [rating: 4/5]

iCard created by Wondershare is a great new app that lets you create postcards with your own photos. It only take a few simple steps and you can be in touch with your friends and family at the tap of a button.

There are nine templates to choose from to start with. All range in different styles and colors. Some have pictures around them others have patterns, each one is different. Once you have the template set out you need to decide on a picture. You can take one within the app or from your library you then just insert it into the template.

There is also an option to put into the template your location and a picture of your location where you are. Great if you are thousands of miles across the world from the person you are sending it to! If you do make any errors whilst deciding on your photos you can clear the template and start again.

Once you are happy with the template and the photo then you just need to put in your text. The postcard is set out with your chosen photo at the top then any text at the bottom. You tap on the button that shows a speech bubble and write your text in the box area. You can change your font style and size as well. Within this section there is also an option to add a face with an expression. These mood faces range from scared, angry to happy or if you wish you can have none at all.

Once you have designed your postcard then you tap the send button, from there you have to decide how you want to send it. There are several choices email, twitter, facebook your library or just copy it to paste else where. Then you hit send and the person you send it to will receive a beautiful postcard personally designed by you!

The app is very easy to use, all the buttons help you along the way with the options underneath. The templates are lovely to look at, theres a great choice in colors and pictures. It would be nice as a future update to see more options for the templates, because there are only nine and it would be quite easy to use all the styles very quickly.

iCard is definitely a great app for sending personalized postcard to your special ones. We live in a world now where more and more people communicate electronically. This is another great option to consider instead of sending simple text messages via a mobile phone and one that I am sure would be greatly appreciated.
