Location-based apps come a dime a dozen and the pattern I have seen in the past is that most people try others but always default back to Google. Bing has gotten some people to convert but these forms of objective seem to be the constant default. Localscope encompasses that objective information and also allows you to see what people and friends are saying about things around town. The beauty of this process is that they do not rely on their own engine to find information but instead pulls from 5 engines that are well sustained.
Localscope for iPhone has several ways of finding the information that you want. When you open up the application to search for a location near you, you can select between the different options. Google and Bing are great for finding a location on a map but Twitter and Foursquare are better for getting opinions on the location. You can also search by one of the thirty five predefined options. That is all great but what can you do when you find the location? Well this app is full of features, allowing you to call, see the url of your search, Open Map, Set as Current Location, Add to Contacts, SMS, Email, Facebook and finally post on Twitter. As you can see it provides you with a ton of options and ways to use this information without having to use 5 apps to do all of this.
Perhaps my favorite part or the coolest part of this app is the three different views that you get to choose from. The first is a list view that allows you with all of the options I mentioned above as soon as you search. The second view is a map view that shows you the map first and then you can get the information mentioned above from there. The last, and perhaps the coolest, is augmented reality. In this method you hold the phone up and it will tell you what direction to point the phone and you will see a marker. I really like this option and it is just cool looking aside from being incredibly useful. From this screen you can also access all of the information that you could from the other screens.
Visually the application is great and the layout makes it very easy to use without constantly having to pop in and out of menus. The ease of use is always something that I look for with an application. One thing I usually find is that too many items are hidden in menus; that is not the case with Localscope. It has everything right there in plain view for you so you can do your search, find your information and go on with your business with as little frustration as possible. The sharing features make it easy to help with those text messages you get that say, “Hey, where’s Barnes & Noble?” This is something I often get from my wife and I will look it up and try to relay that message. This app makes it easy for me to simply send her the information. That is just one simple use that it happened to provide solution to.
I have been very impressed with this app. This app even worked in my area which is very rural and that causes problems for many applications. Its ability to find objective info (locations), subjective info (Twitter & Foursquare) and make it easy to access is awesome and a must if you find yourself looking for a great location-based search application.

Dribbble is a “show and tell” web site for designers and other creative types. The idea behind it being that you share sneak peaks of your current projects. Your peers will then give you feedback on your work, and you can respond in kind. Being invitation only Dribbble is chock full of arty people who want to be there, care passionately about design, and strive to produce work of quality.
Dunk is an iPhone based client which allows you to surf the timeline of recent Dribbble shots. You can also customise your feed so that you keep tabs on your favourite designers.
Being an app designed to showcase design, and good design at that, Dunk needs to work well and look good. So does it?
When a Dribbble user wants to show something off they produce a “shot”, which is a small screen image of their work. Typically a 400 x 300 pixels in size. Other users can then comment on that work, or fire a “rebound” back, which is another “shot” they created and is inspired by that idea. Yeah, you got it, the terminology is basketball based.
If you want to know more about Dribbble then you can visit their faq, here
But we are here to talk about Dunk…
In a word, the user interface of Dunk is beautiful. Its the kind of app Steve Jobs might use to demonstrate how good a GUI can be on the iPhone.
Dunk does all the things that you expect from a well rounded iOS app. Touch controls are intuitive, and tab and navigation bars drift in and out when needed. If you want to glide through Dribbble user’s shots then you are one tap away after app launch.
The entire Dribbble time line can be scrolled through by swiping from page to page, whilst artwork loads on the fly. It works in exactly the way that Apple’s own Photo app allows you to view images, but these are pieces of artwork loaded from the web.
To read comments, or find out other related info on the design on screen, you simply tap the bottom of the image and that info all scrolls up. It’s seamless. To keep moving just swipe forwards or backwards.
I have to admit to being quite professionally jealous of how well rounded Dunk’s UI by robocat is. Nice work guys.
You don’t need a Dribbble account to use Dunk, so if you are interested in the community and the concept give Dunk a whirl today. Its probably a must have app for designers on the move to keep in touch with a vibrant and growing community.

The iPhone 4 uses a vibrational gyroscope, called a microelectromechanical system (MEMS) gyroscope. This in addition to the existing accelerometer allows the Gyro Air Drums to detect three dimensional (roll, yaw, and pitch) rotation as well as device tilt. Gyro Air Drums transforms all the sensor data into an enhanced, fun drumming experience for the user.
Using Gyro Air Drums, a multitude of drums are arranged at two vertical levels in a 300 degree setup around the user. Tilting the iPhone 4 upward allows users to hit the upper level instruments, the hi-hat, crash, and cowbell. Holding the device level allows users to hit the snare and toms. Pointing the device in any horizontal direction around the player brings differing drums into view as if the drum set were actually set up around them.
Gyro Air Drums 1.0 is available worldwide exclusively through the App Store in the Music category and is currently at an introductory price of $2.99 USD (or equivalent amount in other currencies).

]]> https://touchreviews.net/best-iphone-4-camera-plus-pro-app-updated/feed/ 0The app store has hundreds of different calculator apps. The specialized calculators such as the graphing calculators, builder’s calculators, and engineering calculators all provide features not found in the native iPhone calculator app. The rest of the apps which seems to be nothing more than different user interfaces for the same basic calculator have always made me question the need for yet another calculator app. Now, the good folks at TapBots who created the amazing ConvertBot conversion app, have released yet another basic calculator application with a couple of features that should have been implemented better to make them useful.
CalcBot, just like all other apps by TapBots feature a stunning user interface. It uses a dark user interface and features the almost neonish blue text that ConvertBot made famous. The buttons are all clearly labeled and are sized appropriately for fast and easy operation. If it was up to the user interface alone, this app would be named the king of all calculators. But looks are not everything.
The tagline used to describe CalcBot is “never lose your place in a calculation again” and the concept is simple. Provide a calculator that mirrors desk tape calculators. As you type, the display shows you a “formula” view of your calculation. Under the current total, the steps of the calculation are shown as a formula. Press the equal button and the calculation is transferred to a virtual tape that you can access by swiping down on the screen. Access more formulas by swiping sideways. Want to recall a previous calculation? Click on it on the tape and it is transferred to the calculator screen where, conceptually, you can edit the formula as needed. While this all sounds great, in practice, it is far from great.
Rather than using a traditional tape where each operation is listed on its own line, the tape is simply a list of the previous calculations shown in a formula view. Long formulas are cut off and do not wrap around to show all the steps. Pressing on the formula, will transfer it to the calculator window. This is where the app missed the concept of an electronic tape calculator. Rather than allowing the user to edit the individual parts of the formula, the user is only able to erase the parts starting at the last part and moving in reverse. This means that if you found a mistake in your calculation in the middle of the formula, you have to erase everything to the right of the mistake, fix the mistake, and then re-enter the rest of the formula. That in itself renders this app useless for what some may need a tape calculator for.
In its current incarnation, I can not recommend CalcBot as a useful tape calculator for users who use calculators extensively. Users looking for a companion app to ConvertBot that uses the same beautiful user interface theme will be happy with this app. Power users will soon be looking for a more robust and useful application.

Mirror Cam is so simple to use, just swipe left or right from frame to frame, tap the screen and then save the picture. Each one is designed to take full advantage of the iPhone 4’s Retina Display to make every frame look perfect. Instead of just staring at a blank, black screen, this app uses the new front facing camera to give users a live view of themselves. It comes with 9 included frames, with more planned for future updates. Reflect on how you look by pointing the camera at yourself and even have some fun playing with how you look. ]]> https://touchreviews.net/mirror-cam-iphone-4-free/feed/ 0The iPhone 4’s new front facing camera brings with it a slew of new possibilities in photography applications. While there is no doubt that its main usage will be for chatting applications (such as FaceTime), many apps have been popping up that are using the front facing camera as a photobooth. iLookFunny for iPhone is one such app with a lot of potential but not enough execution.
iLookFunny is a very simple app. Its sole purpose is to add elements to a photo taken by the phone. There are currently twelve different elements such as funny glasses, red nose, devil horns, etc… The user taps the screen once to bring up the list of elements and, once chosen, the element appears as an overlay on top of the phone. You can resize the elements by pinching them (in a linear way only – the elements maintain their proportions) in and out. The app allows you to simply align the elements with the current camera view and press the big button on the bottom of the screen to take the picture. Sharing options include sharing the photo on Facebook and saving it to the photo library.
While the concept is great, this app is lacks in key areas. There are only 12 elements that can be selected from which provides for a very limited amount of usage. Also, the elements can not be combined. That means that the user can not combine the funny glasses with the devil horns. That means that at most, a user can take 12 pictures and experienced the entire app in one sitting. When put through the “Zafrani Girls App Usability Meter” (essentially a gauge of how long an app is useful for when used by my daughters), the app did not pass the 10 minute mark. Increasing the number of elements and giving the ability to use multiple elements at the same time would definitely help. While minor, another execution mistake, in my opinion, is the addition of a watermark on all saved pictures.
All in all, while the app is limited as far as the amount of time used, my daughters were able to take neat and cute pictures with this app. They just wished that they had more elements to choose from. The developers’ website mentions that they will be submitting an update that will increase the number of elements to 24 which will definitely be better than the 12 that it is currently shipping with.

In Part 2 we looked at iMovie for iPhone, Location Awareness, The iPhone 4’s Gyroscope, and The Glass Case of the iPhone 4.
Yesterday we took a look at the iPhone 4’s overall look and feel, it’s Speed (and battery life) when compared to earlier iPhones, and a few bits and pieces that didn’t really fit into any particular category.
Today I want to round this series out with some cool stuff I have found this week while enjoying my iPhone.
UPDATE : Touch Reviews now has a new category where you can track all the new accessory reviews and deals. Our ‘Accessories’ category will be updated continually so make sure you bookmark it.
I spent a lot of time chatting with people in various Apple forums, comparing notes, and tracking down what I think are some of the best accessories for the iPhone 4. First on the list, and on most people’s I am guessing, is obviously a case to protect your iPhone 4.
The first case to consider is Apple’s own Bumper. It’s not cheap, but if you can find it in an Apple store, or if it’s available online, then it’s just one click, or a couple of steps away from where you are buying your iPhone 4 anyway.
Whilst Apple’s Bumper has become somewhat infamous this week, because it is seen as an overpriced accessory that some consider we are having forced on us. To be fair it is a quality case. The Apple Bumper is not simply a band, as many have assumed. It has felt backed secondary buttons which rest over the iPhone 4’s existing buttons, for example. And is constructed from a mix of hard and soft materials to make the surround rigid where it needs to be, and soft to the touch, and on it’s rim where you put it down.
MarWare have a marginally cheaper, and slightly different colour range of Bumpers in a similar design.
If you prefer leather cases then Gaia Mobile Pouch is certainly worth checking out. It is a snug fitting leather pouch which hugs the iPhone both with and without a small case on the iPhone 4. The pouch comes in a range of colors and retails for under $20 and is a great option if you want to keep your phone ‘nude’ while in use, yet protected while on the move.
However, by far my favourite iPhone 4 covering to date is from GelaSkin.
GelaSkin offer something unique for every iPhone 4 user. Whilst not really a physical case for your iPhone that will protect it from drops and knocks. It is rather a screen protector for your entire device which can have either their wonderful designs printed on it, or your own. A GelaSkin is something I have chosen for my iPhone 4.
Short of having your device stripped down, and the case professionally airbrushed, this is as close as you can get to a truly beautifully customised device. And they are not just for iPhone 4s, or even just Apple gear. GelaSkin do iPads, the entire rage of iPhones, and many Nokia, Android and other devices.
Some of the artists they work with produce some stunning imagery. And they have tie ups with Marvel comic designs, and other pop culture imagery. Designing your own is devilishly simple with a web interface that even your granny could use to produce a custom iPhone cover from a few high quality image files.
If you are totally crazy about iPhone 4 cases then you could even consider something like this as a case…
I have to admit to being tempted by this high tech iPhone Bumper, which is machined from a block of aircraft grade aluminium, and weighs only 25 grams. Just like Apple’s Bumper it has buttons engineered into it that sit over your iPhone 4’s controls, making it an extension of your device. The Element Case is certainly a more reasonable purchase than the ancient wood back for the iPhone 4… Made from African Blackwood and with an 18 carat gold Apple logo it’s not cheap.
If you have to ask the price, you can’t afford it!
There are also some more sensible options than those last two which come from the usual suspects… Belkin have quite a large range of iPhone 4 cases and covers.
And this rather bizarre armband for your iPhone.
It’s a great concept but I am not sure I’d want to be seen out wearing it.
I’ve spent a fair amount of time using my iPhone 4 with a Bluetooth keyboard this week. For part of that time I used it in the dock. But what I really wanted to do was use it in landscape mode. Especially now that iOS 4 allows a lot more apps to run in landscape. Unfortunately that entails propping your iPhone up against something. Unless you get a cheap little thing called a Movie Peg.
Watching movies or typing in landscape are too things that this super cheap and cool accessory make possible..
I have one on order.
iLuv offer some fairly funky designs of iPhone 4 cases. One of which has a stand which pops out to allow you to prop your phone up in a similar way to the Movie Peg. So you could kill two birds with one accessory there.
I am not sure if I am going to bother with a screen protector for my iPhone 4. I don’t see the glass getting scratched from normal use. But if you are desperate, both GelaSkins and iLuv are offering them. GelaSkins are not on sale yet. But iLuv’s are.
Neither are cheap!
iLuv even have “privacy” screen protectors which reduce the viewing angle at which your iPhone 4 screen can be seen from. So that nosey parkers peering over your shoulder or sat next to you on the plane cannot easily see what you are doing on your device.
The first thing that impressed me with the Jawbone Icon bluetooth headset was it’s great packaging, just like Apple, Jawbone have pushed out all the stops in ensuring that not only does the bluetooth headset look great on display in it’s plastic case atop the packaging but that all the accessories including multiple ear pieces, charger, sync cable and manuals are all beautifully encased.
The apps that you get to install via online synchronization include the simple choice of the voice used that talks to you, to the more complex apps that will read sms, email and other app information to you as you use Jawbone Icon. These more complex apps usually cost you although most come with free trials.
The Jawbone Icon comes in a range of 6 designs and is available in the Touch Reviews Accessories Store for $79.95 which is $20 cheaper than Apple’s own online store and if you are on the lookout for your first, or a new bluetooth device you can’t go wrong with the Jawbone Icon for iPhone.
The first app I bought for the iPhone 4 was iMovie for iPhone. If you are going to buy any piece of software for this device it should be iMovie. It’s a very simple to use because it is a feature light movie editing suite. But nonetheless it is more than worth the $4.99 that Apple charge for it. Anytime you find yourself on the beach, or at a family gathering and want to just add that extra bit of pizazz to a quick video you have shot, then this is where the iPhone 4 and iMovie will really come into it’s own. You may even want to consider chucking Apple another few dollars for their Apple Component AV Cable, and then with some music added to your movie, some titles, and nice transitions you can wow your family on your home entertainment system with a movie you knocked up sat on the sofa… without ever having touched a video camera or computer! Just a thought. It’s certainly a plan I have for the very near future.
Apple have also pushed out a slew of free apps for the iPhone, iPod Touch and iPad. And its worth making sure you are up to date on these.
For me personally one of the Apps I am most excited about right now is the Formula 1 Live Timing App “Timing ’10 CP”, which gives Google Earth like views of racing action live from Formula 1 events around the globe. I’ll be brining you a full review of that in the coming weeks.
On the subject of Google Earth. Why not pull down that app for the iPhone. It’s super fast, and looks great on the Retina Display, and is of course free!
“iBooks” comes on the iPhone as part of iOS 4. But do remember you are not limited to Apple’s iBookStore. Amazon offer their “Kindle” app. And Barnes & Noble also offer a “BookStore” app, and a “B&N eReader” app. Be sure to check out Apple’s competition. They have free books too.
Finally, another cool app to stick on your iPhone 4 is the “PayPal” app. It’s really handy for sending money to people online, or even billing them. I use it among my friends right now for small transactions. And it is the first step towards your iPhone becoming your wallet. Watch PayPal closely in coming months as I think we are going to see some interesting developments there.
Well that is it on the iPhone 4 for now. Thanks for sticking with me through the last few days. I hope these last few recommendations help you out in your quest for making your iPhone 4 experience as fun as mine has been.
And really do have a go at designing a GelaSkin. Even if you don’t buy one. It’s great fun using their online tool to mock one up. And the art on their website is a joy to look through.
Do be sure to let me know your thoughts on what I have said in the comments…

]]> https://touchreviews.net/mobileme-gallery-app-updated-apples-iphone-4/feed/ 2iOS 4 will bring Multitasking which has been one of the most anticipated features for the iPhone and iPod touch. Apple is implementing Multitasking support by providing new APIs to developers which include:
PixelGlow recently sent us an update regarding their popular diagramming app for iPhone, iPod touch and iPad which incorporates Graphviz called Instaviz.
The latest version (V1.9) of Instaviz will support multitasking and takes advantage of the new retina display in iPhone 4.
iOS 4 will be available as a free update on June 21 (Monday).
]]> https://touchreviews.net/iphone-developers-updating-apps-ios-4-ready/feed/ 0The details they have are as follows :
Apple restricting this to the iPhone 4 makes a lot more sense than their Multitasking restrictions in iOS4 for earlier iPhones. The mobile iMovie package probably really does benefit from the extra processing power that the Apple A4 CPU in the iPhone 4 has. The graphical capabilities in the new iPhone 4 are pretty much the same as the iPhone 3GS, or perhaps a little les powerful overall because of the increased screen size, the CPU is significantly more powerful in the iPhone 4 when compared to the iPhone 3GS. And iMovie needs a lot of CPU horsepower for transitions, and image processing work flows.
Although, having said that it would probably be possible to edit video without too much sluggishness on an iPhone 3GS, or on the more recent iPod Touch revisions – at a pinch.
It is clear however that Apple sees iMovie as a major selling feature for the iPhone 4, and therefore by restricting its availability to drive upgrades. What is a little more confusing is why Apple have not made a version available for the iPad yet. Expect that to perhaps be linked to an iPad update early next year, or even at the tail end of this year.
At the moment you also cannot share iMovie for iPhone projects with iMovie for the Macintosh. (But you can export finished videos for sharing with other computers and web services, obviously.)
Both the export limitations, and the limitation of the software not being available on the iPad, is more likely temporary, and more to do with the level of extra work required to make these packages work with the different screen resolution on the iPad, and effectively import and export slightly different iMovie file formats between iDevices and desktop machines.
Would you have liked to see iMovie for iPhone on the iPhone 3GS, and sooner rather than later on the iPad? Let us know your feelings in the comments.
