iOS developer Steven Troughton-Smith made an interesting discovery on Monday – current iOS applications can be installed on the new Apple TV.

In a tweet the inquisitive developer says that the Apple TV is indeed set up for apps and that you can actually install them with the OS in its current state:

So, not only is the AppleTV set up for installing applications (of UIDeviceFamily 3), but the installation actually works

At the moment there’s no way to run these apps, but considering the new Apple TV is jailbreakable, in theory at least, it’s fairly safe to say it shouldn’t be too long before some hacker finds a way to make the magic happen.

This obviously opens up all kinds of opportunities, possibly more so for the jailbreak scene than an Apple TV app store. Imagine if you will, a game running on your iPad, streamed to your Apple TV over AirPlay, with your iPhone as the controller.

The future is looking bright indeed!

The new Apple TV has started shipping for those lucky enough to have pre-ordered one, and Apple has posted a version of iOS 4.1 for the device to its public software restore servers. Chronic Development Team member, pod2g, has been playing around with this firmware and has discovered an exploit with his ‘SHAtter’ tool that could be used as a potential jailbreak for the device.

Users who are interested in jailbreaking the new Apple TV have been advised by Dev-Team member, MuscleNerd, to get their hands on the device as early as possible. As he points out, Apple fixed a jailbreak hole in the iPhone 3GS with a hardware update, and could do the same to patch the hole that SHAtter uses for the Apple TV.

Jailbreaking the new Apple TV could allow users to play content from additional sources, like a USB hard drive or services like Hulu+. It could also mean that we may soon see games on the device that use other iOS devices, such as the iPhone, acting as a controller. It will certainly be exciting to see what the new AppleTV could be capable of following a simple jailbreak.

Will you be jailbreaking your new Apple TV? If so, what additional functionality would you like to see on the device as a result of this? Let us know in the comments!
