Mini-games help you train your player and increase fitness levels. However, technical and physical capabilities aren’t enough. You are also tasked with keeping high social ratings by engaging with fans, coach and media.

Lego: Life of George Review

There are times when two things that you hold dear collide and instead of becoming even greater than the sum of their parts they become a monster. Take my love of all things deep fat fried and Cadbury Creme Eggs, put them together and it becomes a sickly sweet mess. But then you can take miniature things and ponies and you get miniature ponies which are simply delightful.

Therefore when I saw that Lego had brought out a game that included physical Lego blocks and an iPhone app I was hoping that it would fall under the latter category rather than the former. The iPhone / Lego combination has come together in ‘Life of George’ a $30 Lego set that works with a free iPhone app with the same name.

George is a frequent flyer and on his travels he takes a lot of pictures of the things that he encounters and he presents these things via the Life of George app in the form of photo albums. Each set of pages consists of 10 hidden items and by tapping on any of the 10 blank pictures reveals the image that you have to build out of the real Lego bricks that come as part of the set.

You are up against the clock and things can get a little tricky especially with the smaller pieces and in your hurry you can often find that what you are building falling apart. As soon as you have built your matching creation you can tap the screen, place the creation on the supplied display board and snap a picture.

You need to make sure that the board is positioned correctly and that there is no glare on the picture to ensure that the app can compare it correctly, but given that you’ve done that then you are scored based on speed and accuracy.

With 13 different locations and 10 creations per page there is a lot of building to be done and that’s before you include the 30 levels that have been added with the Christmas update and 50 spaces that are made available for you to create you on creations to play with. These My Life creations are great fun and really bring out the creativity in the ‘child’. The only tricky part is getting the lighting right when taking the photograph to add your creation to album. The accuracy is pretty great but if there is any glare in the picture it can be seen as there being no block there at all.

Of course all the creations are flat 2D creations, and while I would love it to be possible to include 3 dimensional creations to build I don’t see how an app would be able to record the accuracy of that!

There is also a two player option where you can go head to head on a single device on 5 randomly selected creations taking it in turns to see who has the overall best speed and accuracy. It would be nice if you could share your own creations with other players either via a code or uploading them a website as would GameCentre integration to compare your high-scores with other players around the world.

If you are a fan of Lego and have an iPhone or iPod Touch then Life of George is an excellent combination of the two and well worth the $30 price point. Life of George is available at all good Lego stores and re-sellers and via the Lego Website.

A Snappy Christmas 3D Review: A storybook for kids based on the Snappy Dragons character. While the character is cute, the book is lacking in many areas.

The app is a reading book for children and offers options between English and French, and between Read By Myself or Read To Me. There are also three games included that give you a bit more to do than just the short story.

First the story itself, the plot felt a little weak and the characters were distant. Snappy and his friend Meline build a snowman in the woods but are missing a key piece until they get some help from Santa. Good enough for kids, I suppose, but there’s no real connection built with the characters.

The design itself has issues. First, the cursive font that was chosen is not suited for young children. It was difficult to read from time to time and would be hard for kids to identify some of the letters. And some words were highlighted in different colors, which might lead you to believe they were emphasized or interactive. They weren’t. Also, the narrator made an error and spoke an extra word that wasn’t printed. That is a critical error in a reading book for children.

Then there’s the technical side. The 3D layers effect was best thing about this app. And some of the animations were also good. But I had continual problems with the app crashing, even after an update was released. And it only works in one orientation that was upside down for most iPads with cases.

On the positive side, the app had a classic appeal and characters with potential. The UK English accent was engaging and clear. The sound effects added to the story. And adding a few simple games to the app gave it a bit more bang for the buck. There’s actually some good potential here. Potential.

A Snappy Christmas 3D disappoints in its execution, but leaves room for improvement. With a few tweaks and maybe some additional background on these two characters’ relationship (I mean how does a little girl come to have a dragon as a best friend?), there’s an opportunity for a successful series of books. While I might pass on this title, I’d be interested to see what they do with it in the future.

Though the 3DS offers some great new features, such as glasses-free 3D gaming and new local networking functions, apart from 3D the console doesn’t really have any advantage over Apple’s devices. With far greater functionality and exceptionally cheaper software, more and more people are choosing devices such as the iPod touch for handheld gaming as opposed to the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP.

While iOS devices are already a well established contender in the gaming market, recent technological advances and new recruits would suggest Apple intends to get even more serious about gaming.

The new iPad 2 features a dual-core A5 chip, which provides double the performance of its predecessor, in addition to 9 times faster graphics. These advances are sure to make their way into future iPhones and iPod touches and provide an even better gaming experience on the touchscreen devices. It is also believed that Apple has hired two gaming executives from Nintendo and Activision, which can only mean the company intends to make gaming even greater for its customers.

Though the 3DS certainly won’t be a flop, the technological innovations that come so frequently from Apple, together with the incredibly cheap software, greater functionality, and the increasing popularity of Apple devices, mean that Nintendo and Sony have an incredibly difficult job of ensuring their handheld consoles remain a large contender in the gaming market.

An Apple patent application revealed by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office this week, and first reported by AppleInsider, has confirmed that the Cupertino company is currently experimenting with a 3D camera for the iPhone. The patent is entitled “Systems and Methods for an Imaging System Using Multiple Image Sensors,” and uses dual cameras to capture, process and render 3D images.

Apple’s patent application describes its process as “a paradigm shift from the known software-based approaches,” which “guess” how to perform stereo disparity compensation and produce 3D images. Apple said that those guesses can result in poor quality photos that are littered with artifacts. Instead, Apple’s method uses a hardware-based system with a “deterministic calculation for stereo disparity compensation,” which will apparently produce better photos, and even 3D video.

The latest groundbreaking device to boast a similar feature is the Nintendo 3DS that launched earlier this week. This device also features dual-cameras capable of taking three-dimensional images, however, the device also uses a revolutionary 3D display to show this content without the need for additional 3D glasses. Apple’s device would also require a similar display to display 3D content.

Earlier reports of 3D Apple product surfaced back in 2009 when it experimented with head tracking technology to provide a 3D experience.

The iPhone and iPod touch devices have been major rivals to handheld consoles since their release, and by introducing 3D, Apple will ensure that other devices don’t get too far ahead.
