Ultralingua’s tag line is ‘For people who love language’ and I can’t argue with that as long as your language is English or Spanish as it is a quality English/Spanish dictionary.
If you’re looking for an iPhone/iPad app to specifically learn Spanish then this is not the app for you, however if you are looking to supplement your learning or be able to quickly look up and translate words between English and Spanish and vice versa then Ultralingua for the iPad the ideal solution.
The application is well laid out clear and easy to use. As you start typing three different panels will instantly update with the word that you are searching for, an alphabetical list appears in the left hand panel while possible alternatives are shown across the centre bar.
Selecting either word from either area will load the word details in the main panel on the right had side. This panel is where the translation takes place including word variations , pronunciations and context.
Small details can make ok apps turn into good apps and the switch between English to Spanish translation to Spanish to English translation is one of those small details that shows how much attention to detail has been applied to this app. To switch between the two is a simple task of pressing the button in the top right hand corner of the screen but the smooth animation of the button as well as the instant switch is a pleasure to behold.
Talking of small details, there are other items that didn’t need to be added but have been and again help raise this app from ok to good.
All previously searched words are available via the history tab for quick, easy access and it can also be cleared completely or edit individually.
Then there is the number pad which is accessible from the 123 button at the top of the screen. This is great for translating numbers, as you type the number on the numerical keypad the word form is printed below and you can then switch instantly between the two languages.
Ultralingua is a really good English/Spanish translator app and it comes highly recommended, however at a cent under $19 and with no ‘lite’ version to try out before you buy you probably need to be pretty sure that it’s an app that you can make use of.

Information is power and in this fast paced society fast access to that information is equally important. The online ‘bible’ of information at the moment is Wikipedia, but the trouble with Wikipedia is you have to have access to the internet to use it and as we know there are occasions where there is no coverage for our iPhones or iPod Touch’s. Well this is where AllofWiki Offline aims to step in.
AllofWiki Offline does exactly what it says in the title, it downloads all the content of Wikipedia to your iPhone, iPad, iPod Touch for you to browse at your leisure whether you have 3G/Wifi or not. The biggest flaw in this plan is the size of the download which at present is over 5GB. Now I don’t know about you but balancing the amount of music, apps, video’s and photo’s on my device is a constant juggling act and so finding 5GB of free space to download all the content was not going to be easy. That being said for the purpose of this review I clear enough space and then left my device for a couple of hours while it downloaded.
Once the data has downloaded the interface is easy enough to use especially on the iPad where the larger screen is put to good use allowing you to search and navigate the pages easily as well as bookmark pages for easy access. The only things missing from this version of Wikipedia are the pictures.
The search is fast too which is what I would expect considering that all the data is now stored locally. The app is not updated on an incremental basis, instead you will be prompted as and when new full downloads are available.
The 1st download after your initial download is free and then subsequent downloads are charged at $1. These downloads will be made available within a week of them being made available by Wikipedia which usually occurs monthly.
While the functionality and speed of the app is very good I have to question the point of it. Surely if you want the content of Wikipedia at your finger tips you’ll have an iPhone with a data plan and surely there can’t be many places left in the US that don’t have some form of network access.
If you’ve got the space to spare, I for one know that I don’t, and you want all of Wikipedia at your finger tips then this is the app for you although at $9.99 and $1 updates it’s not cheap.

After all I’ve never landed an airplane but can still rate Flight Control, I’ve never hit a baseball but can still review Baseball Slugger so Living Word shouldn’t be a problem either.
LivingWorldApps say that Living Word is an iPhone App that combines God’s Promises to help people to focus on the true Promises of God & overcome daily life challenges and with that claim in mind they have done a pretty good job. For one the app looks great, each screen has a beautiful high quality image as it’s background image definitely adds to the biblical verse that is presented in the foreground. The navigation is intuitive too with smooth scrolling menu’s and the ability to swipe through verses via the touch screen.
The main menu presents you with a few options, firstly you can use the search functionality to search for a particular verse or a verse on a specific subject, you can view verse based on their content in the form of ‘When you feel…’, Angry, Lonely or Sad for example, or ‘When you need…’ Comfort, Grace or Peace. The other alternative is to view all 287 verses. There is one area where I feel that the app is let down, some additional content may be needed for added value.
This app allows you to view each verse in many of it’s different iterations from the original and new King James Versions to the Good News Translation and even simplified Chinese there’s a version for everyone and reading the different interpretations of the same verses can be interesting in their own right.
The app is customizable too. If you don’t like the gorgeous background images you can change it to a solid color of your choice instead. You can also change the font and default translation should you need too. Finally you can mark your most popular verses as favorites which can then be easily accessed via the home page.
People looking for detailed account of the Bible should look elsewhere but for a quick reference guide to key verses on specific subjects this app should provide ample options.
