World Series of Poker HD for iPad [rating: 4.5/5]

Just under a year ago touchreviews.net reviewed World Series of Poker for the iPhone and iPod Touch. We really enjoyed the game especially the design and seamless online integration. Now the game has been ported to the iPhones younger and bigger brother the iPad.

For the most part the iPhone and iPad versions of the game are identical shifts makes my wonder what took Glu Mobile so long to release this iPad version of the game.

The game certainly does justice to the iPad’s larger screen. The game looks as good, if not better than the iPhones graphics, thanks to the iPads larger screen. From the videos that litter the game as introductions to the various events to the in game graphics and navigation screens the graphics make the game a pleasure to play. Everything is where you would expect it to be and during the game play there are often multiple options to each command you wish to complete.

Texas Hold ‘Em poker is not a difficult game to play, all players are dealt two cards and then five ‘community’ cards are dealt for everyone to share. Between the dealing of each card all the players get the opportunity to place bets depending on how strong you feel your hand is compared to that of your opponents. If you are new to the game there is a detailed help section although it is all text based.

The app will give you a small number of chips each day that you play but should you want to increase your number of chips additional ones can be purchased to increase your pot. However it must be remembered that the app is only for entertainment purposes only, so any money you spend on additional chips cannot be won back!

For the single player the Career Mode is where you will spend most of your time as you attempt to move through the seven locations winning as much virtual money as you can. While for those looking to play against all competitors you have the opportunity to play online against between either 6 or 9 randon players or thanks to the built in Game Center functionality you can play against any of your Game Center friends to see who comes out on top.

The Game Center integration also enables 28 achievements whichs adds additional value for your money. While the app is $4.99, a high price for some, the amount on offer in this app makes it worth while especially for serious poker fans.

The are two slight annoyances with WSOP HD the first is the fact that there are no additinal features in the iPad version of the game, the other is the inclusion of advertisements for some of Glu Mobile’s other games. While they are not overly intrusive it’s a little annoying to see them after paying five dollars for the app.

Deal Or No Deal Vegas Gold [rating: 3/5]

Play Deal Or No Deal On Your iPhone, now with the Vegas Gold Edition brought to you by I-Play. Compete in popular casino games and win big in the popular game show to walk home with millions.

The game comes with several other games featured and to play Deal Or No Deal you have to earn your winnings first. To do this you have to compete in the casino games. There are five to play, which include: BlackJack, Craps, Slots, Roulette and Texas Hold’em poker.

When you first start the game you have access to the BlackJack game. You have to play and win cash there to unlock the other four games. To unlock them you simply purchase a game with your winnings. All the winnings from the games win you your chance to play Deal Or No Deal Vegas Gold.

You can either play a quick play game or the full Vegas Gold game. If you play the quick game you just play a game of the classic version of Deal Or No Deal. If you have never played this game before the game is all about 26 cases that have a sum of money in them from $1 to $1 million. You choose a select number of boxes. Then the banker offers you money for your boxes before you look inside. You choose whether you want to accept his money or open the boxes and take your winnings. It is really entirely on luck what you end up winning if you choose to open the boxes.

Deal Or No Deal Vegas Gold

If you decide to play the full game you have to start the casino games first and then work up to the No Deal game. Each game is touch controlled, if you are spinning the wheel you swipe, shake to clear a pot or simply tap the screen.

The games are straight forward enough if you know how to play. If you don’t it is quite hard to pick up and play by following their instructions. It does become quite confusing as well when trying to remember if you have to tap, swipe or shake. It is very easy to lose your winnings if you accidently use the wrong control in a certain game, an error that I made a few times.

The more you earn you achieve access to different floors where the winnings are higher and you can go right up until the diamond floor. There are also power ups to help you along your way.

Within the game are virtual models to assist. All these ladies are like real life models who smile and entice you to play, they do seem to move slightly awkward and seem to be fidgeting a lot though. I felt that because of the ladies on every game, it was aiming it more to the male gamer rather than open to anybody. Not to say it isn’t a game for females as well I just felt maybe there should have added both males and females to even it up a little. It would after all benefit the developers as it would open it up to everybody.

The game at times didn’t always respond to my touch or if it did it was very delayed. There was a lot of loading time in-between as well which can get annoying when all you want to do is just play. The animated graphics are very good and realistic and do certainly have that Vegas feel about it.

The game is very similar to the other casino games available in the app store. I-Play have managed to add excitement to the classic game of Deal Or No Deal. If it was the game on its own it would not have the excitement like in the actual game show as you are not playing with real money. Therefore adding the other games give it an edge above the other Deal Or No Deal Games.

Dogs Playing Poker [rating: 4/5]

Just type poker into the App Store search field and you’ll get what seems to be a never ending list of poker games and so you may think what can a new poker game add to the genre that hasn’t already been done? Well as the title suggests this game brings you poker and dogs!

I’m not sure why dogs have been associated with various indoor sports games, something to do with them being mans best friend and trusting perhaps but dogs have been depicted playing poker in art for centuries now. It’s those pictures that are the inspiration behind this game.

Because of the aforementioned art link between dogs and poker the game ‘Dogs Playing Poker’ developed by Candywriter looks great. The dogs ooze with personality and the environments where the games are played are beautifully drawn and look stunning.

For those of you that haven’t played poker before, if there are any of you out there, the game starts with a short tutorial of both the rules of Texas Hold ’em and how Dogs Playing Poker works to. The tutorial is carried out while playing a couple of training rounds of poker so it helps you get up to speed very quickly.

Now that you are ready to play the game seriously, you need to choose the doggie representation. Initially you get to chose from 4 dogs but as you progress you’ll get to unlock 18 other puppies to play with plus 1 fox and a walrus! As far as I can tell the only difference this makes is the look of the dog that you play with. Still it gives you something to aim for and is the basis of the integration with OpenFeint.

The game plays well with you and your four doggie opponents sitting side by side as your cards are dealt. There is a guide next to your cards giving you an indication of how good your hand is and it’s updated as each of the community cards are dealt.

Choosing your action is easy to select with three large buttons placed down the right hand side of the screen allowing you to choose to between calling, raising the bet or going all in.

Each round moves along at a good pace and you can also turn off the dealing and the other dogs moves in the settings to make things go along even faster although I preferred the option of leaving it all switched on and taking advantage of the fast forward option available at any time that will fast forward through the turns before automatically stopping when it’s your turn.

Dogs Playing Poker is a fun game and will fill anytime when you are in need of a quick poker fix, it’s not going to replace the serious poker playing apps which also include multi-player options unlike this one, but is entertaining none the less. If you want a fun, single player poker app then Dogs Playing Poker fits the bill perfectly.

World Series of Poker Hold em Legend Mobile Game

World Series of Poker – Hold ‘Em [rating: 4.5/5]

Texas Hold ‘Em Poker is the most popular of the poker varieties across America, Europe and of course online. It’s easy to pick up but as in all classic games it is difficult to master. However now you can learn to play or feed your addiction via this latest addition to the iPhone/iPod touch App Store, World Series of Poker – Hold ‘Em.

There are two huge poker tournaments that use this form of the game, World Series of Poker (WSOP) and the World Poker Tour (WPT) and it is from the former that this title takes its name.

Knowing that the game is from Glu mobile, the makers of Deer Hunter 3D, Glyder, Super KO Boxing 2 and Build-a-lot to name but a few, it’s no surprise that first moment you launch the game the app oozes quality and class. The game starts with a video to set the scene of the poker tournament, all glitz and glamor around the poker tables of Las Vegas and this quality continues through-out the application from the in game menu’s to the game itself.

The game play itself is the same whether you are playing a quick cash game, career mode or multi-player over the internet or via Bluetooth and you’ll find yourself looking down on the poker table with 8 opponents. Depending on which mode you have chosen the opponents will either be computer opponents or live people.

World Series of Poker Hold em Legend Mobile Game_2

If you know the rules of poker, and specifically Texas Hold ‘Em, the game is easy to play. You can drag and drop you cards and click directly on your pile of chips to raise the steaks when you feel you have a good hand. When you are initially dealt your hand a guide will show you how strong your cards are helping you decide how much to bet or if you should fold.

As the subsequent cards are dealt this guide will update accordingly, keeping you up to date on the strength of your hand at all times. The computer controlled players will also give ‘tells’ that will suggest to you whether or not they are holding a strong or weak hand. These ‘tells’ must be used with caution as just like in the real world the ‘tells’ aren’t always as they seem.

The single player options will keep you going for hours especially the career mode where you aim to earn/win as much money as possible moving from city too city while unlocking achievements. But it’s the online multi-player mode that could lose you many hours as you attempt to climb the global leaderboards and test you guile against real people.

World Series of Poker Hold em Legend Mobile Game_5

The real people that you get to play against are selected randomly and there is no option to select who you wish to play against. The online mode is time based so you’ll only have 30 seconds to make your move which ensures the game keeps moving and in my playing there has never been a shortage of players to make the numbers at the table. It would be nice also if it was possible to boast about your wins via Twitter or Facebook but that’s not possible either.

official-app-store-badge_touch_4At $6.99 World Series of Poker – Hold ‘Em is at the high end of app price market, however the quality that Glu have put into this application makes it worth it. If you are looking for a high quality poker app that will keep you entertained (or addicted) then this is the one for you.
