Woffo for iPhone Won’t Leave You Puzzled

Woffo [rating: 5/5]

My father was an English Grammar teacher so word games and puzzles were a staple in our house. Many a night was spent in front of a Scrabble board or doing crosswords. One of the pleasures I found when I first came to the App Store was the profusion of word games. Woffo by Gold Brothers Entertainment is a fun, easy to understand word game you’ll enjoy.

Woffo_3Although somewhat similar in play to other word games, Woffo has its own unique take. When the user first opens the game, they are presented with an 18 space board divided between two rows of five and two rows of four. The object of Woffo is to use the letter and wild card tiles to spell letters horizontally and vertically. At the start of the game you have 64 letters and 3 wild cards. Players either have the option of discarding a tile in the trash bin or tapping a tile to place the letter being presented in the upper left hand corner of the screen. Any tile can be selected, either empty or occupied. As you build words they are scored based on the total letter values of the tiles involved. Since words can be scored horizontally and vertically, there is a great deal of strategy involved in not only placing your tiles to build one word but to place them to spell words in multiple directions. The game is over when all of the tiles have been used.

I really enjoyed Woffo for a number of reasons. Firstly, it was an interesting deviation from the usual Scrabble or Boggle clones you find in the App Store. Don’t get me wrong, there are a lot of fine games, but they do seem to gravitate around two central themes. Although Woffo does borrow some themes, the game play is unique and fun. Secondly, I enjoyed the fact there was no clock. I love WordFu by ngmoco but that timer drives me crazy! Rushing me just makes my mind lock up, not run faster. I appreciate Woffo’s developers didn’t make it a beat the clock kind of game. Lastly, Woffo includes social gaming elements. There is the option to share your score on Facebook and Twitter as well as local and global high score boards.

In conclusion, I really enjoyed Woffo and I’m sure you will as well. Woffo is one word game that won’t leave you puzzled.

The Good:

  • Unique and fun take on word games
  • Relaxed gaming environment
  • Social gaming

The Not So Good:

  • Two player competitive mode would be a nice option but doesn’t detract from the overall game play.
