The Dungeon Saga HD Review-5The Dungeon Saga HD Review: The game is a mix of World of Warcraft and Bejeweled – which sounds impossible, but is a lot of fun.

The interface is familiar to World of Warcraft (WoW) players. It starts with a nice “cinematic” that sets the stage. Then several screens of instructions explain the various parts of the game and the interface.

You choose between a warrior and a sorcerer. I chose a warrior which gave me health and mana bars, equipment to choose and maintain, and levels to gain. There is a map to navigate. But unlike WoW where you are free to explore the map, in The Dungeon Saga HD, you must follow the path laid out for you. You “do battle” with your foes by playing a Bejeweled-like game.

The Dungeon Saga HD Review-8The puzzle game is based on hexagons rather than squares which allows you to connect three-in-a-row in directions other than just a straight line. As long as the identical items share a side, you can include them in the chain. This often makes for quicker and longer chains. And you only need touch the icons; there is no submit button. This part of the game is engrossing and can be fast-paced.

The chains will also earn you items such as gold, mana, or health. And connecting swords in a chain will attack your opponent. You want to connect swords when you can. Defeating your opponent moves you along the map. Each level has several opponents and a “boss” you must face to advance to the next level. They go quickly and you can acquire items along the way.

There are also “talent trees” where you can choose which skills or spells to acquire based on your preferences. They change or improve the way you attack your opponents. They become more important as you advance in the game. You can also purchase equipment and other supplies with the gold you’ve earned.

I have a lot of iOS games I can choose to play; this will be one I keep coming back to. It’s both a great short-term (quick jump in/jump out) and great long-term (play for hours at a time, advance through levels) game. It’s simple enough to play, but challenging enough to keep you engrossed. A lot of bang for the buck.

Pros:

  • Quick pace
  • Easy to play, provides hints
  • Can play for minutes, or for hours

Cons:

  • The choices sometimes could use more information – warrior/sorcerer and different “talents”
  • Would be nice to be able to play two characters, both warrior and sorcerer
