Talking Augmented Easter Egg is a holiday application that uses augmented reality to deliver a little Easter charm. The app revolves around an Easter egg that is able to say what it hears in a very high pitched funny voice all while carrying on an Easter theme. The app allows you to interact with the egg and carry out actions to changes the appearance of the egg as well as snap a picture with the augmented egg as an Easter card.
I must say that I have come to be quite fond of augmented reality apps. They take your environment and insert a funny character of sorts in many cases that is capable of hearing what you say and repeating it. It is actually pretty awesome that our phones are capable of this. With that being said I have put the Talking Augmented Easter Egg through the paces and found some funny aspects I didn’t expect to find. Getting started is simple, grab an egg and put it on a flat surface. Then take out your iPhone launch the app and point it at the egg and you’re off.
The different ways of interacting with the Easter egg are very creative and allow this app to not be just a boring talking augmented app. By touching the egg and break it and twirl it with a flip of your finger are just a few ways that you can interact with it. You are also given a set of controls at the top of the screen that allow you to use different tools to interact with the egg. The tools consist of having a chicken sit on the egg and watching it hatch, bunnies going after the egg that you must fend off with carrots and decorate it with the decorator button. You can also put disguises on the egg such as sunglasses or my favorite the facial hair.
The visual presentation of this app is pretty sweet in that it is a seasonal app. I didn’t figure that I’d like very many seasonal apps during the Easter season short of maybe an Angry Birds rendition but this application is pretty fun. My niece absolutely loved it. She is 5 and she said “We don’t even have to color eggs”. I wouldn’t go that far but it is definitely a cool application to put through the paces and see what kind of fun you can have. We also had a blast with the talking part of the app as we always do with the augmented reality apps. The high pitch voice kept my niece laughing for a solid thirty minutes, I guess she was tickled by the sound of her uncle talking like a chipmunk.
Last but not least is Bunny Busters. This is a game that utilizes the augmented egg environment and sends bunnies out to try and crack the egg. A bit of a dark twist if you ask me but I like it. The game is simple, bunnies hop at the egg and you must tap on them to give them a carrot to go away. You get points and for these points you unlock more swag for your egg. Like a top hat. Kind a cool way to add value to the app if you ask me. Overall the app is a pretty cool holiday app that you should check out if you are looking for a seasonal app that is kid friendly.
- Talking is hilarious
- Bunny Busters game is a nice bonus
- Not a lot of replay value
- A few more unlockable items would be nice
