Talking 3D Lab Mat Rating:
Talking 3D Lab Mat is a creation of Mobobo who also created, Mani Golf, a physics based golf app. With physics in mind, they have stuck with this seemingly successful niche and created a 3D talking app. It is the first and only app of its kind that features thousands of combinations. Talking 3D Lab Mat is loaded with an insane amount of combinations that assure you a different experience each time you pick it up if you so choose.
Talking 3D Lab Mat for iPhone takes something as simple as speech recognition and turns it into something really fun. My first experience with this app had me a little confused as to what to do with it. I had read the name and a description so I assumed something with talking but I was in for a bit of surprise.
The controls seem to be pretty simple really. If you want to take a jab at your character just do so with your finger and he’ll react. Rub his arm pit and he’ll chuckle as if you are tickling him, jab him in the toe and he’ll raise his foot and act hurt. These actions are accompanied by facial reactions and mood reactions alike. He’ll even knock on the screen to let you when he is getting bored.
The next thing I stumbled upon was the Potion Blending option that allowed me to change my character. Not only was I able to change the character’s appearance but the voice as well. There are a ton of options for appearance from caveman to zombie. Even better than that, you can mix and match the different options so you can have half alien and half werewolf. The combinations are seemingly endless and very easy to change with the blending tools.
My favorite part of this app (free version) is by far the vocal interaction that you can have with the character and he with you. When you speak you will see him raise his hand to his ear and shortly after you are finished he will repeat what you said. Seems kind of silly right? Well it is but it is also hilarious. My wife and I had fun making random noises and saying random things and hearing the character and all of the changeable voices say it back. Not only does this character have thousands of possible appearances but it also has hundreds of voices that change along with his appearance. Be careful what you say around this little guy because he will remember what you said earlier and repeat it. It doesn’t necessarily have to be the last thing you said to him. This makes for some funny and also awkward moments if you happen to be singing a song like YMCA and it is later repeated when your wife is in the room. Trust me, it was awkward but hilarious.
The presentation of this app is awesome. The 3D character looks sharp and is very polished which is a must due to the app being focused entirely around one character in the same environment. One thing I would have liked to see was more environments but hey maybe that will come in an update. The creators did a truly amazing job on the voice recognition and repeating that takes place in this app. I was shocked in how well the character was able to listen and repeat so many sounds and words with seemingly no issues. Audio and visual presentation is what this app is all about and it does an amazingjob making a stunning impression with regards to both.
This app is not going to change your lives but it is pretty fun to pick up and show off in front of friends and family. I had fun secretly opening the app and placing it in a room and seeing what things were said and then repeated. It took my friends a second to figure out what was going on and though it’s a somewhat lame little joke it is definitely fun to mess around with. I really liked this app and will look forward to future updates.
- Great Visual & Audio
- Speech Recognition and Repeating is off the charts
- Funny app
- One background
- Some more functionality would be cool
