Spore Creatures for iPhone Evolves As Great Simulation Game

Spore Creatures [rating: 4/5]

EA Mobile has proved to be one of the most successful ‘established’ game publishers in the App Store and as they continue to launch their popular titles for the iPhone platform they are giving hardcore EA fans another reason to buy the revolutionary touch screen mobile device.

EA Mobile has played an important part in setting a new standard for iPhone gaming. By bringing titles like Scrabble, NFS Undercover,  NFS Shift and The Sims 3 to iPhone EA has proved that iPhone/iPod touch is great for casual and hardcore gaming.

Spore Creatures iPhone iPad Game

Spore Origins for iPhone was one of EA Mobile’s early games in the App Store and it was an instant hit. Spore Creatures is an extension of Spore Origins and adds more depth to the gameplay. If you like simulation games with amazing 3D graphics then Spore Creatures would be a great start. The entire 3D environment is beautiful and the developers have done a great job in paying close attention to the smallest details in creating a perfect spore world. As your creature interacts with the environment you can hear the different sound effects which creates an engaging experience.

The main object of the game is to survive the hostile environment and earning DNA to evolve and unlock body parts. The current version of Spore Creatures features 4 zones (Sandy Shores, Barren Desert, Dark Forest and Icy Mountains) To unlock a particular zone you need evolve your creature with special abilities. The obstacles in each level vary from dangerous creatures, objects and traps. The game has an element of puzzle in it as you often have to figure out how to pass through blocked paths. Each zone has various levels and each level can be completed by reaching the end of the level. You will have to make various choices to progress further, socializing or attacking an epic creature will enable you to unlock different abilities.

You play the entire game to evolve by collecting more DNA and discovering new body parts to spend time in  Spore Creature Creator where you get to experiment, customize and equip your creature with different abilities. Your creature has a complexity meter so you have to carefully choose the body parts you wish to include. The interface in creature creator mode is intuitive and is divided in three categories. You can customize the color, body style and add or remove body parts. You can add offensive, defensive, movement, perception and social abilities to you creature by choosing from a variety of body parts available. If you are not much of a control freak then you can just select the random option to generate a new creature.

The controls in Spore Creatures are very simple and sometimes very annoying. The movement of the creature is controlled by the accelerometer which can prove to be very frustrating after ten minutes of play. Interaction with creatures and environment is done via touch controls. My suggestion to EA would be to consider adding virtual D-pad controls for the movement in addition to accelerometer based controls.

EA Mobile boasts about more than billion possible combinations inside Spore creature creator however they missed out the feature to share your creation online. It would have been great to be able to share your creation with other players worldwide and be able to download your friends spore creature.

Spore Creatures for iPhone has a high replay value as there are many levels to complete and every interaction with the environment can produce different results. If you already own Spore Origins and are a big Spore games fan then Spore Creatures is a certainly worth your time. If the developers can fix the controls and add online features then this game would definitely deserve 5 stars.
