SlipBox Extends Your Memory with Associative Searches
Edinburgh, Scotland – In line with its slogan “Snug Productivity Software”, Tabi Software’s SlipBox app is specifically designed to “get out of the way” and support the work of the note-taker. Its simple and beautiful interface is designed to be maximally distraction-free. SlipBox is based on traditional slip-boxes – loose collections of paper slips in a box – and manages the notes in a way similar to human memory.
When taking notes, SlipBox actively discourages the use of categories like they are required by most note-taking applications: The user writes ideas as notes on slips and adds a few keywords (tags). For this process to work optimally, the user should choose keywords that seem relevant at that point but not try to create a keyword ontology, i.e. a fixed naming convention for keywords.
When using the collected notes, SlipBox works as an extension of the note-taker’s memory: Just like associations between ideas in the mind, the application computes associations between the ideas stored in the slip-box, and just like the thought process leading from one idea to the next, the associative searches of SlipBox take the user from one slip to the next. In this respect, SlipBox uses the same mechanism as the human brain. This is the true purpose of SlipBox: finding new connections between existing ideas.
The other main features of SlipBox include a full Dropbox integration and a seamless integration with the feature-rich desktop application, which is distributed as freeware. In contrast to most other note-taking applications, SlipBox is a universal app that provides the same user-experience across all devices – including the Macintosh!
* traditional searches for keywords or text
* add, delete slips
* edit, append or duplicate slips
* view all, recent, flagged or deleted slips
* iTunes file-sharing (in addition to the synchronisation with Dropbox)
About associative searches
The basic idea is very simple: each slip (note) contains a few keywords (tags). Between slips that share at least one keyword, there is a so-called “slip scent”. The more keywords are shared, the stronger the slip scent, that is, the stronger the association between the slips. Despite being so straightforward, this novel way of searching your notes is incredibly powerful and will enable you to see new connections between your thoughts. (The actual algorithm uses more information than just the number of shared keywords, but this is the main idea.)
