Slate Solitaire [rating: 3.5/5]

Even to this day, thanks to the fact that it was installed on all Window’s PC’s, Solitaire, along with minesweep, is one of the most popular games, well it is in my fathers house at least and he’s a great barometer of popular opinion. The fact that you don’t need anyone else to play it with also helps. And now you can play on your own some more with the definitive single player game in Slate Solitaire for the iPad.

Slate Solitaire contains 30 different card based solitaire variations, including Blind Alleys, Free Cell, Pyramid and the classic Klondike there is a variation for everyone here and selecting the appropriate one is done simply via a drop-down menu. The cards are automatically dealt out across the screen in their appropriate format depending on your selection. For me my first game was the classic 3 Card Klondike and the cards drawn are animated beautifully.

Playing the game is obviously done via the touch screen where you can simply drag and drop the cards from one pile to another. Again this is all very smooth and accurate making the game very easy to play. There are many options as well to have the playing area, cards and animations displayed as you like them. You can change the look of the cards and the table from a list of multiple options and also control the way the cards play including the automatic turning over off cards where it’s appropriate which is nice.

Each game offers a help page so even if you don’t know the specific rules of any of the specific games you’ll soon be able to pick them up. That being said the help pages are a little messy and with so much information on a single page can be a little difficult to read.

Slate Solitaire is a great game to pick up and play in short bites as the auto-save feature will enable you to jump in and out of the app and not lose your place in your active game. There are also statistics for each game so that you can easily see how well you are at each game.

The game is lacking sound, background music isn’t required but some sound effects as the cards are shuffled, dealt and drag around the screen would be nice.

Slate Solitaire doesn’t add anything to the game of solitaire it just brings 30 solitaire games to the iPad in a slick and functional interface. If you like playing solitaire card games and you don’t want to carry a pack of cards with you or don’t have the space to deal out a deck of cards on the bus, train or aeroplane then this game could be just for you.
