Shape Up Rating:
Shape Up from DS Enterprise has a simple goal and that is to shape up your brain with a brain teasing game of color and shape matching that can drive you to frustration, sometimes in a good way, and sometimes in a bad way!
The premise is simple, you start with two colored discs on either side of a centre circle each with a simple geometric shape, circles, squares, triangles, etc., cut out of it. At regular intervals a potential fit for the cut out will appear in the middle of the screen and it’s up to you to quickly match the shape and color with one of the two shapes on the outside.
You earn points for getting the selection right and lose a life for getting it wrong but you need to be fast as you only have a limited amount of time to make your decision and there is not always a right answer too! In short your three options are:-
- Match the color and shape: Earns you a point
- Match the shape with the wrong color: No effect
- Get the wrong shape and wrong color: Lose a life
With just 2 shapes to choose between things start off relatively sedately but as soon as you successfully match a few combinations correctly an extra option will be added to to the range for you to choose from as it increase from two to three. This continues as you succeed and as the number of options increase so does the difficulty and you will find yourself in a frantic race to match the colors and shapes.
The frantic pace is help by a selection of original background music that helps keeps things moving along nicely. The game is challenging and there is always that appeal to have just one more try to beat your highest score. In addition to that in built addictiveness there is also the added challenge from the world wide leader boards and achievements that come thanks to the integration with OpenFeint. However it is the integration with OpenFeint that causes Shape Up it’s biggest problem.
If you have your options set to be prompted when OpenFeint attempts to post a newly acquired achievement this prompt comes up as soon as you win that achievement, even if you are right in the middle of the game which it doesn’t pause! This means that multiple lives can be lost while you attempt to dismiss the prompt. Now once you have an achievement you aren’t going to get prompted about it again but it’s extremely frustrating when you’ve acquired one of the more difficult achievement to suddenly see all your progress disappear as you lose all of your lives trying to dismiss it. This is a major flaw and needs to be addressed immediately.
The games simple concept and implementation make Shape Up a nice pick up and play brain training game, however there are similar games out there that offer more variety for the price, perhaps the addition of a range of difficulty levels and/or styles would make it better value for money. Not forgetting that the OpenFeint publishing problem need to be sorted out quickly or Shape Up would do better to Shape Out!
- Well implemented concept
- Addictive qualities
The Not So Good
- OpenFeint publishing option interrupts game
- No variety
