Pirate Mysteries Rating:
In Pirate Mysteries for iPhone you are on a journey through many different lands along with your father. You meet unique characters while trying to solve ancient riddles and find hidden objects. The journey spans from the shores of the Atlantic all the way to the Land of the Dead. The presentation of this puzzle game is what makes it intriguing. It is very well put together and presents several challenging game types while constantly changing the environment and music.
The game is fairly simple as far as controls and objective is concerned. You are asked to locate objects on the screen by solving riddles that hold clues, piece together maps and several others mini-games. These all find a way to fit into the story which is obviously the glue that holds the game together. The story line, without spoiling it for you, is that your father has become a pirate and has gathered a rag-tag group of buccanears to go on a journey with him. You of course follow along and are faced with many games to help the cause. The fun and somewhat humorous story line help keep your attention on the story and not just the puzzles.
For puzzle game types, you will find yourself immersed in a world of puzzles that have a constantly changing environment and mission. They seem to vary a bit from place to place but they all follow a puzzle theme. You will find yourself looking for objects similar to “Where’s Waldo” , solving riddles to find the objects hidden on the screen and even piecing together a map to see where to go next. There is a large variety of small twists that follow a similar base objective. With that said, at time you feel like you’re going back to the same task but with the refreshing story and slight changes, it really does seem like there’s enough change to keep it interesting. The puzzles can be challenging at times and that is the name of this game.
Pirate Mysteries brings 30 unique locations that provide a very diverse back drop. The game does a great job of changing scenery which is a problem I see in many of the puzzle games I play. It also sports 10 mini-games that seem to come in and break up the monotonous feeling that all games try to avoid. These games play a key role in keeping the game feeling fresh thus adding replay value.
The presentation of this puzzle game is what sets it apart from the rest. The witty story helps in making you laugh after an eye-wrenching search for an object on the screen. It also ties all the levels together instead of mindlessly going from one to the next without any real flow. The music in this game was great. I like the way it faded in and out when you’re playing and the diverse sounds followed a pirate movie theme. It was very refreshing to not hear the same song the entire time when you are playing a hidden object game that can take some time to finish. The visual presentation was great as well. I could have gone for some animation to the environment but all in all this is a puzzle game and it never gets away from those roots. I thoroughly enjoyed the ever-changing environment and music.
- Visual & Audio Presentation
