Oh The Huge Manatee! Rating: ★★★½☆

Oh The Huge Manatee is a fun avoider game developed by Littlegreymedia. Score points by avoiding the sealife falling from the sky. Yes you read that right, the sky!

The aim of the game is very simple, you are at the bottom of the screen and you move left and right by tilting your device. Falling from the sky will be all different sealife creatures large and small. Some falling sideways and some, like the sword fish falling straight down. All you have to do is avoid them. The longer you keep it up the more points you will collect. To achieve extra points you can collect stars.

There are a few bonus items you can collect to help you along the way. Grenades which clear the screen and blow up all the mammals you can see. To set it off you just tap your screen and it blows up. There are super shoes to give you a bit of extra speed to dodge that little bit faster. Force field bubbles for your protection from the sealife landing on you and finally an uzi to fire at the annoying mammals about to land on you.

Every time you collect a grenade it shows at the top left corner of your screen so you know when you have some and how many. If you use it on the mammals you score 250 points for every one you kill. For extra points any grenades you collect over 5 you get 500 points. So it makes it worth while if you keep trying to collect without using them as it really does bump your score up a lot. Another way to get a few bonus points is, if you pick up a shield and you already have one that you are using you get another 500 points. You also score 250 points for each mammal you kill with the uzi and the shield.

There is a leaderboard where your score is kept locally so you can see how well you are doing, it also records scores globally so you can compete with others around the world. There is also the option to connect with facebook and compete against your friends. Every time you finish your game it tells you what level you rank at, so it does feel quite competitive at times as you try and try to get an higher score than before.

The sound effects are quite good. The game is full of bouncing and zooming mammals. Little noise are made when you collect stars and other objects. The graphics are not the best. Basicially a white screen and a few drawn black lines for the sealife, you and the stars you collect. Its nothing really outstanding or colourful. For this type of game though it doesn’t really need to be a 3D or brightly colored UI. It’s simple but highly addictive. It might be an option though for the developers to offer different backgrounds, with different colours and creatures to spice it up a little.

Hand drawn graphics type of game are becoming quite popular now in the app store so I can see the game doing quite well. Its certainly addictive enough to make you want to carry on trying to beat the people in front of you on the leaderboard. It gets fustrating when you are doing really well and then you get squashed and have to start all over again and becomes quite hard to put down.

The Good

  • Global leaderboards
  • Quite addictive and competitive
  • Good sound effects

The Not So Good
