MyTP Freeskiing HD for iPad. Skiing game that goes Downhill from the Start

I’ve always been a fan of the winter sports, in a gaming sense at least, and so when I received MyTP Freeskiing HD for my new iPad I was excited to see what it had to offer to my new device.

Taking a look at the numbers, things looked promising. 3 different resorts each with 3 different slopes offers a nice set of options for you to show your skills on while 7 different characters and 6 different sets of ski’s mix things up even more.

However, numbers don’t tell the whole story and you will soon see that as soon as you start the app things start to go downhill, and not in a good way!

From a distance or at a glimpse the graphics may pass as HD but in reality they don’t push the boundaries of the iPad in the slightest and while the developers admit in their App Store description that the lack of collisions is by design to help the game flow and be more fun instead it makes the game feel fake and takes away any real challenge.

Talking of challenges this is how you progress through the career mode. Each track has three challenges to complete to enable you to unlock new challenges and new locations. You are rather left to your own devices on the challenges with the requirements of each challenge not made clear at any point.

The controls have been updated for the iPad and they are probably the best part about the game. They are described before each race and they are well set out across the left and right side of the iPad’s screen.

They are pretty responsive too and the sensitivity can also be controlled to provide even better responsiveness which I found very useful for the accelerometer controls for the steering of your chosen skier.

Unfortunately the ease of the controls soon get forgotten when they are transferred to the poor animations of your skier as they make their way down the slopes. Unfortunately your skier looks and feels more like a robot as they float down the slopes and when they do any jump or grind they are just as rigid. There is little or nothing that feels natural about this game.

The 9 challenges across the three resorts does offer a fair amount of content but the problem with that is there is minimal enjoyment in working your way through them. At just $1.99 you could argue that you get what you pay for, however if that’s the case don’t sell it as an all singing all dancing skiing app for the iPad as it’s far from it.

The Good

  • Clear controls
  • 9 slopes across 3 resorts

The Not So Good

  • Poor ‘HD’ graphics
  • Rigid skier animations
  • Poor collision management
