According to a new report published by AllThingsD Apple is all set to announce the release date for iPhone 5 at a media event on October 4th. We’ve highlighted a number of rumors and speculation which point to mid-October release date for iPhone 5 and Apple could be looking at unveiling the next-gen iPhone during this event.

While Apple could certainly change its plans anytime, sources said that the October 4 date has been selected by the company to showcase the iPhone 5. Sources added that the plan is now to make the new device available for purchase within a few weeks after the announcement.

The report further mentions that Apple’s new CEO Tim Cook would play a prominent role during the event. He is expected to be accompanied by other executives like Phil Schiller, Scott Frostall and Eddy Cue.

It’s unclear whether Steve Jobs will make an appearance but the company could decide on that at the last moment depending on his health.

The Cupertino based company could also unveil the new lineup of iPods during this media event. The new iPods are not expected to feature major re-design. Apple might make just minor internal hardware changes.

iPhone 5 is widely believed to feature 8 megapixel camera, A5 dual-core chip and higher RAM. It’s interesting to note that this year instead of announcing the next-gen iPhone during WWDC Apple has chosen to unveil the phone during a special media event.
