Apple iPad 3G Jailbreak Demonstrated (Video)

I was saying in an article the other day how interesting it is that hackers are cracking and repurposing devices with such quickness these days. Earlier this month we ran a piece detailing how the WiFi-only iPad had been hacked by MuscleNerd, a member of the iPhone Dev Team using the Spirit jailbreaking software. Now, just hours after the launch of the iPad 3G, pictures and video have again emerged from MuscleNerd. This time the iPhone and iPad hacker has demonstrated a jailbroken iPad 3G running Cydia. Cydia, you’ll remember, is the third party application store specifically for use with jailbroken iPhones and iPads.

It should be noted that although the use of the Spirit jailbreaking software has been demonstrated twice, it is not yet publicly available. Now that the iPad 3G has been hacked it is very reasonable to believe the software will become available soon. Techtree lists some of the key points of this new tool:

  • Spirit is an untethered jailbreak. This means you won’t have to jailbreak the iPad whenever it needs reboot or runs out of battery and dies.
  • Spirit works on all devices.
  • Spirit does not include a carrier unlock.
  • Spirit requires your device to be activated or hacktivated.

If you want to jailbreak your iPad, Spirit is the only option at the moment. Although a carrier unlock would be a nice feature, it’s lack is a small price to pay if you want to free your iPad.

Of course, all of this leads to the inevitable question: Should I jailbreak my iPad?

Jailbreaking is not for the faint of heart. If you choose to jailbreak your iPad (or your iPhone) you need to understand there are positives and negatives to the venture. On the positive side, you will gain increased control of the overall operation of the device and access to the Cydia software store. If you wish to explore the world of unsanctioned software then jailbreaking is an option for you. What you should be aware though is that jailbreaking can be fraught with danger. Jailbroken devices void the warrant and terms of service laid out by Apple. If your device gets broken or requires service Apple will flatly deny you. I’m not telling you what you should or shouldn’t do, I just want you to be aware of the risks and rewards.

Will you jailbreak your iPad? Do you feel the rewards of jailbreaking outweigh the risks? Do you think if Apple opened up their device all of this would just go away? Leave us your thoughts.

What is the point of this video for being public.. if a lot of people is waiting for the release and keep them wait.. it is just to say that they are really great? that they can do it? We all know that, right? so WTF is this? over and over again..

I think its good that apple locks there devices up so much because its more fun to go on the adventure “defying the authority figure”. Not everyone has cydia too so there are more apps that most people wont have
