Ahead of iOS 5 release Apple has just released two new apps on the App Store. Find My Friends and AirPort Utility are now available for download.
During Apple’s iPhone 4S launch event Eddy Cue while talking about iCloud services announced a new app called “Find My Friends”. The app allows you to find your friends and family who are willing to share their location details with you. You can download the app for free from the App Store and it uses the same Apple id that you use with iCloud.
Once you enter your log in details you can invite friends and family to begin sharing their location with you.
Friends who share their location with you appear on a map so you can quickly see where they are and what they’re up to. And since Find My Friends works with Contacts and Maps, you can do things like find the quickest route to a surprise party — and avoid running into the birthday girl — all at once.
The app offers some nice customization options to control duration of sharing and even features easy to configure privacy settings.
AirPort Utility app for iOS devices was also made available today and allows users to manage WiFi network and AirPort base stations. This app is also available for free from the App Store.
See a graphical overview of your Wi-Fi network and devices. Change base station and network settings, or manage advanced features such as security modes, wireless channels, and more.
AirPort Utility works with all Apple 802.11n Wi-Fi base stations, including AirPort Express, AirPort Extreme, and Time Capsule.
iOS 5 is expected to be available for download later today. The latest software update for iOS devices brings more than 200 new features. Notable enhancements include Notification Center, Wireless syncing, Over the air updates, iMessage, Reminders app, Twitter integration, Safari enhancements and much more.
