iOS 5 Release Date Set for October 10th As AppleCare Starts Preparing?

A source closely tied to Appleā€™s Customer Service call center has revealed to AppleInsider that AppleCare is expecting an influx of calls related to a possible October 10th release of iOS 5. Apple, in the past, has released public versions of iOS after 8 betas.

The current version of iOS 5 is in the 7th beta, where an 8th beta may be released over the next two weeks. This will give Apple ample time to receive feedback from developers and work out any kinks in the final release. Apple will begin to ready itself for any complaints or issues pertaining to iOS 5 prior to its release.

For instance, one person familiar with the matter said his local AppleCare call center has been told to expect an eightfold increase in customer calls on that day, and that staff are being advised ahead of time for the increased traffic.

The person could not say with any certainty what will be released on that Monday, but noted that the increase in call volume is related to iOS. This led them to speculate that Apple could release iOS 5 and iCloud on Oct. 10.

In the past, Apple has also released final versions of iOS a few weeks earlier than a hardware refresh. This was seen with the iPhone, iPhone 3G, iPhone 3GS, and iPhone 4. Apple will likely follow suit and release the expected iPhone 5 / 4S the week following the October 10th release of iOS 5.

This will confirm rumors of Apple releasing the new iPhone 5 in the mid- October time frame. Apple is also expected to release refreshed iPod models, but has yet to present invitations to media outlets for any possible scheduled event.
