Apple’s iOS 5 brings more than 200 new features to iOS devices. The software update supports iPhone 3GS, iPhone 4, iPhone 4S, third and fourth gen iPod touch, first and second gen iPad. However, it’s worth noting that not all new features are compatible with the previous generation devices.
The new reminders app Apple introduced in iOS 5 allows you to create a list of tasks that you’d like to be reminded about. There are many third party apps available in the App Store that offer almost similar or more functionality however, the highlight of the app is location based reminders.
Apple’s reminders app allows users to set a geo-fence and be reminded about a task when they arrive or leave a particular location. When we were testing the iOS 5 beta builds the feature existed on all devices. As the final version of iOS 5 was shipped we noticed that the location based reminders were not available on iPad, iPod touch and iPhone 3GS.
After going through the release notes and contacting AppleCare it was revealed that Apple does not support the location based reminders on iPod touch, iPad or iPhone 3GS. The feature is exclusive to iPhone 4 and iPhone 4S.
Siri is exclusively available on iPhone 4S even though a few hacks have suggested that it can very well run on previous generation devices. Location based reminders not being present on WiFi iPad, iPod touch is understandable. However, the functionality being absent in WiFi+3G iPad and iPhone 3GS further suggests that Apple will continue to differentiate its iOS devices by limiting certain functionality even though the hardware is capable.
