Since the release of the iPhone 4S, many users have complained that they have been experiencing issues with their battery life, usually lasting about 5-6 hours before completely draining. This is a serious issue, particularly because Apple claimed that the battery iPhone 4S offered longer talk time.

On Wednesday, Apple released iOS 5.0.1 beta to developers to test. The new iOS update is expected to remedy the battery life issues and a number of other bugs in iOS 5 which went from the developer’s original GM seed, straight to the public. The update also brings the multitasking gestures from the iPad 2 to the Original iPad. The full list of improvements is as follows:

iOS 5.0.1 beta contains improvements and other bug fixes including:
– Fixes bugs affecting battery life
– Adds Multitasking Gestures for original iPad
– Resolves bugs with Documents in the Cloud
– Improves voice recognition for Australian users using dictation
– Contains security improvements

iOS 5.0.1 beta introduces a new way for developers to specify files that should remain on device, even in low storage situations.

Apple has apparently addressed an issue regarding apps storing offline data. iOS 5.0.1 is expected to fix this issue as well. Apple has not yet set a date for the 5.0.1 update, but it will likely arrive in 1-2 weeks, the usual time for an iOS update to go from beta stage to public.

The update will also resolve a security issue when using a smart cover. As detailed by 9to5 Mac an iPad 2 running iOS 5 could give access to your device even when your iPad has a passcode by repeating the following steps:

1) Lock a password protected iPad 2

2) Hold down power button until iPad 2 reaches turn off slider

3) Close Smart Cover

4) Open Smart Cover

5) Click cancel on the bottom of the screen
