Official Google Voice App for iPhone Already Approved By Apple?

UPDATE: The official Google Voice App for iPhone has been approved!

Following the release of Apple’s App Store approval guidelines earlier this month, several unofficial Google Voice applications have been cropping up in the App Store and have left iPhone users begging the question: when will we see an official Google Voice application?

Well, a recent article from TechCrunch claims that Apple has already approved the official Google Voice application, and that we should expect to see it in the App Store anytime soon.

They claim that they’ve heard from a source “close to Google,” that all the search giant has to do to get their application in to the App Store is revamp it so that it works smoothly with the iPhone 4 and iOS’s multitasking capabilities.

Of course, an official Google Voice application has already been to Apple last July, although it didn’t make it in to the App Store. The Cupertino company claimed that Google’s application “duplicated existing functionality,” and therefore it was rejected.

With the release of Apple’s guidelines informing developers of their restrictions, it became clear that there was no reason why the Google Voice application should be denied a second time around.

So now it’s time to play the waiting game. If the rumors are true, it shouldn’t be long before the Google Voice application is available, but for now all we can do is wait. We’ll let you know as soon as it’s ready for download!

If you want to get your hands on a third-party application, I’d like to recommend GV Mobile + (View in iTunes); it’s a very well designed application with some great functionality.

  1. It will be interesting to see if the official Google app includes VOIP/SIP dialing, which is missing from the third party apps. The VOIP/SIP dialing is the key to making a Google Voice app work like a phone.
