It’s been a long wait, but following a change to App Store guidelines several months ago, and many third-party apps later, an official Google Voice application is now available for the iPhone.
Just like other Google apps, this one’s free, and it’s claimed to be much faster than Google’s HTML5 web app. It provides access to all of the major Google Voice features, such as:
- Cheap rates for international calls
- Free text messaging to U.S. numbers
- Voicemail transcription
- Display your Google Voice number as caller ID when making calls
The application also providers users with push notifications for new voicemails & text messages, and Google’s blog explains that most of your calls will be placed via “Direct Access Numbers,” making them connect just as quickly as regular phone calls.
You’ll need an iPhone with iOS 3.1 or later to use Google Voice, and of course, a valid Google Voice account. Download it from the App Store here.
Unfortunately for those of us across the pond, Google Voice is currently only available in the U.S. at this time.
