One of Foxconn’s manufacturing plant located in Chengdu, China caught fire due to an explosion on Friday. According to MIC Gadget the explosion happened in the “operating room” and this particular building is reportedly part of iPad 2 assembly line.
Apple Inc. responded to All Things Digital’s request for a comment on the situation and issued a statement:
We are deeply saddened by the tragedy at Foxconn’s plant in Chengdu, and our hearts go out to the victims and their families,” Apple said in a statement provided to AllThingsD. “We are working closely with Foxconn to understand what caused this terrible event.
The Cupertino, Calif. based company declined to comment on any possible impact on iPad 2 production however 9to5 Mac were quick to notice that the estimated shipping time for the second gen tablet has increased from 3-5 days to 1-2 weeks.
The cause of explosion is still being investigated but early reports suggest that it was caused because of a super-light dust, used to clean iPads screen, catching fire.
It is widely believed that Apple is expected to begin iPhone 5 / 4S production soon and it’s not clear if this unfortunate incident will impact the production of fifth gen iPhone.
