Forgotten Colours for iPad is a series of fifteen illustrated short stories that take on an entire series of heart felt topics. This book brings the iPad’s wonderful display and illustrators David Garcia Fores, Desiree Arancibia and Marta Garcia’s skills together to help put beautiful images to great stories. I found the stories and characters to be incredibly intriguing and applicable to everyday life.
This book certainly caters to a reflective view at the world for adults and a going forward look at the world for young people. The stories go together to ask a simple question, what would you do if all of the “colour” and things that make the world what it is today vanished? We all have days that the world seems to be gray and dreary but this book takes on the above question in a unique way with a great spirit.
You follow Carmesina, the main character, as the stories tackle subjects like love, friendship, fears, courage and many more. I really enjoyed the point of view of the stories as they were not the brightest of stories but somehow the point of view seemed to stay positive. Often seeming reflective, similar to how my grandpa acts when he tells me stories of trials and tribulations that made him a better person. The stories always seemed to put a smile on my face.
This 112 page book of fifteen different short stories takes you on a journey to far away worlds and times. This helps keep the creativity in stories that often seem to blend between fantasy and reality. It always seems to find a way to pull at your heart strings and keep you thinking. The illustration of the stories is masterfully done. Not always the most complex pictures but they seem to follow the story and make sense through the entirety of the book. This book also boasts three languages: Enlgish, Spanish and Catalan. This all comes together to create a great value.
The extras are simply a bonus to an already great set of stories and illustrations. There is a sketchbook of an unpublished collection of the illustrator’s sketches that I must say is extremely impressive. If you like illustrations then you will enjoy the professionalism that is displayed in this book. Perhaps one of my favorite parts of the entire book is the interactive elements. I obviously viewed this on my iPad 2 and you will notice that there some interactive details on the illustrations that will enhance your reading experience and make the book even better. I thoroughly enjoyed this ready and would recommend it.
